There is an inadequate use of synthetic (and annoying) sounds. Not a big fan of how Williams composed (and orchestrated) this short sequence.

I concur. The synth sounds are a little bit too “80s theremin” to me. It sounds dated, and doesn’t really make an impact.

It’s a weird spot in a mostly excellent soundtrack.

Frink would not approve of this opinion…

Care to share with the group?

I think you’re going to get a snarky comment from the bigger Frink.

Why?

Because you like anime, MACs, and most probably animes played through MACs.

He’s already mocked me for those. Why would he mock me for that comment? (I don’t really like any synth in general, either the stuff created in the past or now)

Haha, well here’s an…interesting theory.

Whoof. That’s one of the dumbest theories I’ve ever heard.

Let’s deconstruct it like I did with the equally-spurious “Rey is Palpatine’s Granddaughter” theory!

Similarities to Anastasia aside, Rey being Han and Leia’s daughter is goofy as far as I’m concerned. Makes no sense to me that Han and Leia would be so heartless as to just dump Rey on a planet alone. That’s messed up. And then when she shows up in their lives, they don’t bat an eye? Nah. Not buying it. Sure, maybe she was kidnapped or something and sold into slavery, but I just don’t see her as being a Solo because there’s literally no reaction or exposition about it.

The way the original theory keeps saying that they’re alluding to Rey (by saying “it”? What?) in the film and that “It could mean Ben, but IT DOESN’T!” Of course the tragedy is Ben’s fall to the dark side. There’s no reason to believe otherwise.

The part where the guy goes on about Boba “witnessing that Vader had a son” didn’t happen. Boba doesn’t know Vader is Anakin, Boba doesn’t know Anakin had a son, the only thing Boba learned about Luke in their tussle in the comics is Luke’s name, and he feels it’s not very helpful information an then he leaves because Vader doesn’t say anything. He isn’t there when Vader reacts. So that’s nothing.

The next part just… what? “Mandaloren” What? How high was this person when they came up with this shit? Mandaloren armor? Just… you’re embarrassing yourself, dude. I don’t even need to say how stupid this is. Also, they use the term “Mandalorian” in The Clone Wars and Rebels, so…

The First Order part implies that there was at one point a “Mandaloren” (god that’s stupid) power in the galaxy that we’ve never heard of. Nope. Plus, in this canon, what connection does Boba have to the Mandalorians? His father, sure, but he doesn’t seem to have any connection to them in The Clone Wars.

“Not human but humanoid” meaning that he’s a clone is technically correct but very much a reach. Not buying it.

The rest of it is meaningless. So Snoke knows who Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon is, he was only the Rebel hero who helped destroy two Death Stars and end the Empire. Even Rey knows the legends. It’s all just guff. Not to mention Boba Fett is a bounty hunter and why would he suddenly become a space wizard emperor to get back at Han? One of the most spurious theories I’ve ever heard. Can’t wait to see it not happen in the theaters.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

They obviously meant to say “MandeLorean”.

Okay, Frink has to make that Boba’s ship in his ESB edit now! 😉

Where were you in '77?

Ok, then my thought is “eh.”

I don’t see the big deal.

Maz is almost an entirely post-production character anyway, so it’s not too shocking.

I dunno if it’s a great thing per se, but yeah.

No need to read any more into it than the “reshoots” on Rogue One. It’s just how movies are made these days.

Hopefully Rian does something cool with Maz in VIII.

  • How did you survive the First Order attack on your planet Maz ?
  • A good question, for another time.

(yep, “layered characters”…)

I was hoping she wouldn’t show up in VIII. The character wasn’t interesting in TFA (she gives the saber, that’s all she basically does; she doesn’t provide any real information, just a recap of the former vilains of the previous films), they should have created a new one.

I don’t think I have ever heard anyone claim that Maz was a layered character. I have heard that about Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren but not Maz…interesting.

Author

i thought perhaps that comment about layered characters was sarcastic. in also found Maz uninteresting in VII, thats why i hope she becomes interesting in VIII. maybe it will be all flashbacks and we will finally hear “the story”. it better be a compelling story if they do that though.

Adam Driver recently gave some insight as to tone of Episode VIII but a couple of other things about Episode VIII as well!

Collider: What was it like working with Rian Johnson after knowing the character (Kylo Ren) and now working a new director? What was that experience like?

ADAM DRIVER: Maybe this is just me thinking of myself, but I’m surprised [because] in their shoes I’d be way more stressed out than [J.J. and Rian] seem to be. Rian is coming into something that we kind of set up and he just took it to the next level in a really great way. He wrote it, too, and Rian’s writing is so clear. I learned a lot of things about my character through his writing. Some things we talked about before and some things we didn’t. He was working on [the script] while we were still working on the first one. To understand what J.J. was doing and take ownership from there is kind of a remarkable thing. And he’s the most polite, unassuming guy and he was appropriately territorial about some things but would still be the first to admit when something’s not working. A lot of times you need to rise to understand what the script is, and perhaps I’m beginning to be unclear, but he’s a great person to work with.

Collider: That’s all I ever ask, how was the script?

DRIVER: It’s great. It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go “oooh, it’s dark” but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear. He trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s really fun to play.

The “He trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He’s not dumbing anything down for someone” part really intrigues me because it seems like for the first time since ESB we will be getting a film with that level of writing. And though the OT didn’t have moral ambiguity in them hopefully Adam’s comments indicate that the ST will.

Rian Johnson is great, I have high hopes for Episode 8.
