Hello, long time viewer first time poster. Been a fan of Star Wars since the 70s and was really hardcore in the 80s and early 90s. The prequels really turned me away from SW for a while… even the OT which I’m really mad about.

Anyway I’ve been in the SW community in one way or another since the usenet. Heavily involved with r.a.s.sf.sw when it was conceived, was Steve Sansweet’s first collections manager/archivist, and helped write several books etc.

Back when the OT was first released to Laser in the “Definitive” collection, I helped write a list of all the additions, subtractions, and mistakes… I actually found that file still floating around on the net…

I was also a projectionist for USC and then Pixar for a short while. This reconstruction of the OT just blows my mind. Especially the SS edition. Harmy’s version is beautiful… almost too beautiful. Thing is that I never saw Star Wars in the theater at such a high quality so it’s kinda weird to me. When I first laid eyes on the SS edition I nearly cried. It’s was so comforting… the grain in the image brought back deep emotions that I seriously hadn’t felt since I was like 11 or 12.

OK I’m trying to locate SS v1.6 and according to you guys here it’s on myspleen and you need an invite. I do not have an invite. Can I get an invite?

Couldn’t really find anything definitive anywhere on this, so I will ask here:

I am a mac user. I have a Mac pro 1,1 running OS 10.7.5

I just installed an internal Blu-ray burner into said Mac Pro.

What is the best way to burn this and other MKV files to blu-ray disc properly and, preferably, without any reencoding?

I see Leawo has what is supposedly decent software. is that the way to go or is there something better?

I was also referred to TS Muxer, but I can’t seem to get that to open on my Mac without crashing.

I have no intention of buying a PC, nor do I want to put these on USB drives or stream.

Any suggestions?

Feel free to PM Me to avoid cluttering the thread 😉

Google is a great resource and I believe MAC can handle an internet browser for such a search, no?

Sorry to contribute to the requests, but does anyone possibly have a spare myspleen invite?

How is this still up?

+Dan Roganti - No need to download; we already fought the CDO and won. This video isn’t going anywhere. Enjoy.

Edit: Don’t see Youtube links listed anywhere in those rules, but whatever. Point is, The Silverscreen Edition v1.0 is on Youtube in 720p and the fact that Disney/Lucasfilm/whoever did not (so far) succeed in taking it down is interesting in and of itself is it not?

Hey guys. Which version is best?

There’s a v1.6 MKV and ISO on Spleen, which I assume look and sound the exact same, but I also found a v1.6 with Harmy’s 5.1 mix added. Unfortunately, for some reason, the file is about 7 GB smaller.

Compression?

Both MKV releases are the same as the original ISO, they just don’t include the disc stuff (menus and whatnot); no extra compression. The 5.1 MKV is the same as the other one with the 5.1 mix as an addition, obviously. If you want an MKV rather than a BD ISO, just get whichever one of those that suits you.

Incredibly interesting! I’d love to know the full story.

I assume the 1 down vote the video has was from George himself 😃

Does the youtube upload have print-sourced audio? Could be that, and the scans, don’t quite match the contentID enough to get an automatic match. It’ll take someone from Disney or Fox flagging it manually.

Edit: Oh, now I see what what quote from Dan whoever is saying. I’m not sure it makes sense or that I believe it, though. Anyway, a youtube content strike isn’t the same as a real CDO. If someone from youtube accepted the uploader’s rebuttal and left the video up, they probably didn’t do their job properly.

Hmmmm. Usually a video match alone is enough for an automatic takedown. And it takes some ridiculously distorting video filters to get around that (which that particular video doesn’t have). So I wonder how they were able to fight (and win) a takedown.

Someone recently uploaded the six films from blu-ray sources and they lasted a while. I think in most of them he ended up removing a few shots and segments of audio that were detected by contentID. It’s no way to watch a film, but I was quite surprised that it worked.

It’s not inconceivable that the contentID isn’t matching. Not a single part of a frame is actually pixel-for-pixel a match to anything they’ve got set for their content. Different sharpness, gate weave, color differences. It might have been enough.

Allegedly fighting a C&D about it is the part that baffles me.

Anyway, this was a nice reminder of how well the project turned out in the end. Great work, guys.

Could I trouble anyone for an invite for sse 1.6? Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Just a heads-up:

I’ve prepared a 5.1 DTS audio stream for the said release that contains the Special Edition ’97 mix of Star Wars:ANH with hairy_hen’s reconstruction of the 1977 70mm 6 track to patch up GOUT footages that the SE 97 audio would appear inappropriate. So, this audio stream is 95.47% of SE audio and 4.53% of GOUT audio

The audio has been edited to play in-sync with not only this release, but, also, Harmy’s Star Wars: Despecialized Edition 2.7

This is just another way to view the GOUT version. It can be found on the ‘spleen.

I’ve made these edits from the DTS-HD MA file, found on the 'spleen, provided by CapableMetal (not to be confused with the unprocessed and unsync’d wave files of the SE’97 trilogy also found on the 'spleen and provided by CapableMetal). The source of the SE’97 audio came from the Cinema DTS CD-ROM discs (from the collection of Jetrell Fo) where the data was encrypted to 6 mono PCM wave files representing each channel of the surround soundtrack. CapableMetal processed and sync’d each of the 6 files to fit TB broadcasts of the SE97, so, the SE97 mix presented in this audio file is from CapableMetal’s work and I appreciate his effort and for his sharing, as well, to Jetrell Fo for obtaining the discs.

After completing the file, the thought occurred to me that kk650 had released his color regrade of the Star Wars OT with the Cinema DTS audio of the SE97. I do not have these so I am not sure the audio can be played in sync with DE 2.7 or the Silver Screen v1.6. But I did the work anyway just for the fun of watching the ’77 release with the ’97 audio, so, I think that this is how one should approach it.

For what it’s worth, enjoy!

So, today I had my first completely work and stress free day in quite a while. So I decided to fiddle around with easily the worst shot in the film to see what I could do to get rid of those dirty color blotches and see what I could get out of it. I tried my hand at a technique demonstrated by Mike Verta in one of his Legacy videos. Mind you there was no manual dirt cleanup and this was just one frame in photoshop, but here are my results after a few minutes:

^ Very Cool, I have a video about cleaning up that scene too - demonstrating some of the commercial noise reduction plugins and how they work on that, but I’d love to know more about the technique you used. I remember watching Mike’s video but I didn’t really understand what he was doing…

In the meantime…

I created a new tutorial demonstrates how to use both the new Color Balance Tool by Dr Dre (still in Beta) and the latest Color Match tool, using a faded Eastman Reel of Star Wars…

As promised, here is my landspeeder cleanup video. In this video I test out a bunch of different Noise filters for After Effects. Surprisingly, Neat Video 4 is not the best filter to use on the almost static SandCrawler scene, though it does by far the best job on the Landspeeder scene…

Though it didn’t make it into the video, I did try out Mike’s technique, changing the Hue on each channel and I can see how that might work to a certain extent, if you have the patience and the skill. It looked like each color pass would probably need to be in it’s own layer or at least use masking? Darth Lucas if you have any screen capture software I’d love to learn more about that technique.

Looking at Mike’s ‘final’ result though - which was still a work in progress at the time - it looks to me like he still denoised it with something like Neat Video after he was done playing with the hue controls…

Grading my own results:

Sandcrawler Shot: B+
Landspeeder Shot: C

Removing the grime in the landspeeder shot just left my shot looking a little too plasticy smooth, and hiding that with new, artificial film grain was the best I could do. Did it look better? Probably, but I don’t know that I’d want to use it. Needs more work!

Grading Mike Verta’s results:

Sandcrawler Shot: A. Mike’s Sandcrawler shot looks fantastic. (https://vimeo.com/119620458)
Landspeeder Shot: B. (https://vimeo.com/120218626)

His landspeeder shot certainly has more detail (hello 4k, multiple prints) but it still looks overly smooth to me, but that could just be down to the compression by Vimeo. I guess there really isn’t a lot we can do to improve it unless we want to borrow details from the blu-ray, which was not an option for the SSE or Legacy, but could be an option for another project…

I’d love to see what Mike’s final version looks like. Come on Disney - just release Legacy Edition already!

Wow that looks excellent! Will this cleaned-up version be getting a release or is it just a proof-of-concept kind of thing?

Also, do you really think Mike used denoising for the speeder shot? Wasn’t he against that because it’s destructive to the image?

This is just a proof of concept at the moment, really I just wanted to test the plugins and see what they could do. However, I would anticipate the Team Blu releases to be as high quality as we can possibly make them, without being destructive or straying into Special Edition or Despecialization territory.

While I’m sure he did use that hue changing method to greatly reduce the blobs, I am also sure he used RevisionFX DE:Noise and possibly REvisionFX DE:Flicker on that shot.
