I have question is it possible for someone fix some color issues dirt and black levels the new 30th anniversary blu ray of transformers the movie? if so is anyone willing to do it when it comes out if you have the release?

Why are you asking about fixing a release that hasn’t even been released yet? Do you have some sort of knowledge that suggests it already needs fixing? From the trailer I saw it looks beautiful. I can’t imagine it’s busted before it’s out of the gate.

SHOUT! Factory generally does an excellent job with their releases that are sourced from new scans. Seeing as how they did a new 4K scan for this release, I would imagine the presentation will be great.

But I’ll repeat the sentiment from above commentors: Why do you think it will have the issues you mention?

“You don’t really mean you’ll kill me, do you?” - Juror 8
“Silence, Earthling! My name is Darth Vader. I am an extra-terrestrial from the planet Vulcan!” - Calvin “Marty” Klein

Well, when someone finally teaches me to time travel and do color correction I’ll get right on it!

I seen some reviews on amazon for a blu ray that was released before this one. Maybe he read that by mistake and thought it was a review for the new blu ray?

High-Def Digest: The Transformers: The Movie - 30th Anniversary Edition - Joshua Zyber (August 31, 2016) wrote:

Back in 2007, the film was released on Blu-ray in the UK. However, no domestic version appeared on the format until now.

The 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray is offered in two packaging options, either a standard keepcase with reversible cover art and a slipcover, or a Limited Edition SteelBook. A DVD version is available separately.

‘Transformers: The Movie’ has had a long and troubled history on home video. From VHS to Laserdisc to DVD and now Blu-ray, the film’s distribution rights have changed hands a number of times, both domestically and abroad. Every new label does a new video transfer for it, and no two have ever looked quite the same, with major variances in aspect ratio and color.

Black levels are very elevated and washed-out, which is really problematic for a movie with a lot of scenes in outer space. The image is fairly soft, especially the opening credit text, and the source elements suffer from the appearance of dirt, dust and specks throughout.

The colors in this movie have always been difficult to get right for some reason … This is most evident in the character of Hot Rod, who’s supposed to be a solid red sports car. … In the Shout! Factory transfer, he’s a dull pink. In this regard, the Blu-ray matches the Sony BMG DVD, but the color seems really odd and out-of-place for the character.

The Blu-ray offers the movie’s soundtrack in two options, either lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 or DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. … Both sound like garbage, one slightly less than the other, but I can’t blame Shout! Factory for that. ‘Transformers: The Movie’ has always had a lousy sound mix.

The lazy parts of the transfer is bad enough but the audio is really bad i’m angrier at the audio. But no ifs and or buts does it excuse the video. It’s almost as bad as the audio they screwed up with both parts of the remastering. Because in the remastering video and the panel they said they were putting in a+ effort. But they botched it they said they were doing proper color correct they didn’t at all. Even though yeah they did color correction but did it based on animation cels. The black levels are washed out and they didn’t do proper clean up. Also they said they found a really good audio source that was a lie.

The problem with this Blu-ray screenshot seems typical with many hi-def releases today – they narrow and darken the spectrum to “boost” it’s apparent saturation. Just look at all that wasted spectrum!

Why? Beats me, but they ruin the picture and make it look artificial (the same with live action).

Anyway, from this one sample, it looks eminently fixable even to the point of making Hot Rod red (just my guess from reading that review). All one would need is a proper color reference for the characters.

We will soon know for sure but it’s not looking good for this new release, not horrible, but not at all what it could have been.

Is there anyway for someone to clean up the dirt and get better audio?

Maybe the Japanese Laserdisc would have better audio, but it still commands crazy high prices even today.

The 1989 LD has Dolby Surround English audio, while the 1998 one has only mono. I wonder what audio tracks were used in that project of the Australian BD with all the bonus features here.

There is also a 80’s Betamax copy on Ebay. I’d be leery of anything other than a first release VHS, as later versions were slow speed SLP tapes.

That’s a cool fix. Wouldn’t the best references be the original G1 toys and the corresponding artwork?

Such as these images for Hot Rod:

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

I’d definitely like to see a properly color graded BD50 of this. Perhaps combine it with the previous project based on the movie and use laserdisc audio. That’d be the end-all, be-all right there.

Wow, it is quite a difference. How do you know he didn’t originally start off as pinkish tho? Could have been revised for the VHS release and tv series.

Does anyone have the 1989 Japanese Laserdisc it has the stereo track. If so great would someone check it to see if the audio is better? If know one on here has it would you look in to getting it. I know its a lot of money but i don’t have a laserdisc player and i wouldn’t be able to do it. Even if i did i still wouldn’t be able to because i also don’t have a blu ray drive.

You can always buy it and send it to someone who can transfer it.

I thought about this as well. Considering it’s a cartoon that promoted a toy line his on screen color isn’t horrible but if he can be made red “like the toy” and the film can have some added lossless audio, I’d be down.

the gamma is all screwed up in the Shout release, blacks are gray

Author

Yep, another disc encoded at PC levels. I LOL’d a bit when I saw in the Blu-ray.com thread that Shout fixed the black bars being grey in another of their releases, but not the black being grey in the film itself.

Kinda figured something like this would happen, Shout has never had very good QA.

Hopefully a better quality release comes out from someone else, maybe when a Japanese release finally comes out.
