DC Comics’ Star Trek #8-12

#8-9
I don’t have 6 and 7 so I apparently missed the first two parts of this storyline, but it wasn’t terribly hard to pick up on what was going on. The villain, Sweeney, is pretty great.

#10
The “Trial” doesn’t actually begin until the last panels of this issue. Until then, there’s some great moments such as one particularly wonderful scene with Spock and Sarek, and then there’s an awkward moment where a lady in love with Kirk is swimming with Uhura and they talk about their sex lives (which is weirder than the fan dance in Star Trek V, which this takes place after).

#11-12
The Trial begins and it’s great. The Klingons are upset over Kirk’s “murder” of Kruge and his crew in III, and an alien named Salla is upset because Kirk allegedly violated the Prime Directive (in a previous issue, I guess), so he calls on various characters from Original Series episodes to testify against Kirk for repeatedly breaking the Directive. It’s a lot of fun, and the conclusion is rather explosive.

^Yeah, those storylines are pretty great.

Unfortunately, from that point on the series becomes pretty meh, at least for me. DC’s first Trek series – the one that directly preceeded this one – was far more well-rounded.

lol. “Not Sweeney” sounds like a captcha that someone makes into a comic about a man in distress requesting another barber.

Also I finished the Skrull Invasion crossover. Felt less drawn-out and repetitive than the Civil War one, had some good twists and guesses.

Civil War 6/10 (since I didn’t actually rate it last time)
Skrull Invasion 8/10

Currently I’m going through the Complete Marvel Reading Order’s list for Iron Man.

All-Star Superman 3.5/10

You’re one of the few people I’ve ever seen rate this series so low.

(I have never read All-Star Superman, BTW, so I’m not making a criticism here.)

I’m definitely in the minority but I feel it didn’t really have one narrative or any real structure, I prefer comics that are less bloated and actually build up to something but this had so many characters, villains, and subplots that I just stopped caring. The art and writing were good though, don’t get me wrong there.

The Champions #1 (1975)
I thought I would collect this short run (17 issue) series. I was thinking to buy the series in a collection but had second thoughts and decided to collect the individual comics.

The Man Of Steel #1-6

The Good:

  • The art!!!
  • Living Kents!
  • Characters are mostly good

The Bad:

  • Krypton’s bleakness (and the stupid “Birthing Matrix”)
  • Lana Lang’s appearance to yell at Clark for ruining her life felt weird to me
  • Supes has no interest in Krypton at all? Flying around for a bit and thinking is all it takes for you to not care at all about the father whose final act was saving your life?

Pretty much agree with your assessment of the comic. Far too much is invested in the ultimately irrelevant task of elaborating on Krypton. But, what it gets right is the character’s core- truly, feels like Superman put in a modern context without being a token gritty reimagining.

I tried reading through Birthright a couple years ago. The first few issues were fine, but the fake Kryptonian invasion killed any interest I had in finishing it.

Yeah it was silly, but I didn’t mind much.

Good issue.

I got this thinking it was a trade, and didn’t notice the “one of four” label under the logo until I left the shop. Curse you prestige format!!

Anyway, this is a good story with some absolutely wonderful art. I’ll need to hunt down the other three now.

This issue is really silly, but I love the way Elliot S! Maggin wrote Superman, so I don’t mind.

I really liked the tragic “Fabulous World of Krypton” short story in the last pages, about Nam-Ek: The immortal Kryptonian who survived the planet’s end. Spoilers ahead for a nearly 42 year old comic:

Current on the Batman Rebirth, working my way through Nightwing. Both series are excellent so far. The restoration of the timeline and universe was much needed.

Batgirl makes a cameo about midway through this issue and she looks to be properly restored also. Including a bit of a nod to TV Batgirl. It looks like she’s been returned to her pre-Killing Joke story & character. No mention of Oracle, Cassandra, or Stephanie. I don’t follow the series yet, so I’m not sure of the specifics. I’ll probably jump over to it soon.

Too bad they couldn’t bother to restore her costume while they were at it.

I just read the first two issues of the Star Wars Infinities series (A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back) and found them quite enjoyable. Empire wasn’t as good as A New Hope, but both had some good ideas and were fun what-if adventures.

K people, I’d like to delve into comics…(big inhale)

(Big exhale)

I’m nervous and I know that the hardest part isn’t knowing where to start. I have decided the first superhero I’d like to read is Batman for various complicated reasons. I know there are MANY writers who have done Batman and many storylines. Iv heard Hush, TDKR, Year one, Killing Joke and specifically Long Halloween are good (very intrigued by Long Halloween).

But I also watched a video explaining how the new 52 Batman series (Death in the family, Endgame etc.) is the definitive entry point for new readers of Batman. Many opinions and my only prefence is that I like trade paperbacks with many comics collected in one. Any suggestions from comic book buffs here would be fantastic! Thanks

I suggest you start with Batman Chronicles, Vol. 1. It collects the first twelve Batman stories and introduces you to the original incarnation of the character.

From there, I don’t know what to suggest. Everyone raves about the Bronze Age stories written by Dennis O’Neal and drawn by Neal Adams – they’re the first comics to return the character to his dark roots after the Silver Age comics lightened him up – but I haven’t read the majority of them, so I can’t say from personal experience just how good they are. Also the current reprints of the stories have altered art, with redrawn panels and ugly digital colouring.

Ooo, I definitely like Duracell’s approach. One thing I can say easily right off the bat(no pun intended) is to not start with New 52. Just, no.

My recommendation would be to follow the Year One canon. Here’s an excellent list that sorts them in chronological order.

My top recommendations would be:
Batman: Year One
Legends of the Dark Knight - This was a long running series that is packed with great stories. The editor for most of its run is the legendary Archie Goodwin, famous editor and writer of awesome Star Wars comics.
Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: Dark Victory
