Finally ordered Blu Rays of original series — Page 3

That’s why I suggested fit, scan, dot by dot, etc. TV’s overscan by default, it’s a remnant from old over the air broadcasts and early HD broadcasts that had some static around the sides, so this would cut it off. Why it is still the default makes no sense to me. You see broadcasters compensating for it all the time by adding padding around graphics (like below the news and score tickers) so customers who don’t turn off overscan won’t lose any of the superimposed graphics.

Lots of HD broadcasts still have noise around the edges (it’s not noise, actually, it’s an alternate data channel stupidly embedded in the image), but it’s a tiny fraction of the screen. Broadcasts have certain defined values for title-safe and action-safe areas (how close you can put stuff to the edges of the screen). For HD it’s SMPTE ST 2046-1, and for SD it’s SMPTE RP 8. It’s not a matter of some crazy content creator deciding to put in unnecessary space around the edges, it’s a defined industry standard that some people simply follow more religiously than others. Not only that, but some broadcasters require that their HD content have extra-large SD-sized space on the edges. Heck, most content creation tools still use the SD-sized values. Why? Because some viewers are watching HD content on a 30-year-old CRT SDTV, and they get calls at the station when critical text is cut off. Add extra space and the phones stop ringing. There are still tons of old SD CRT’s actively in use in the world, and they are built to outlast us all. Skew the demographics to the 75+ crowd and you’ll see where there’s a perfect storm of old CRT’s, cable TV, low tech literacy, and irate phone calls.

Not all content follows these rules. Games for example like to make use of every available pixel. And that’s why most TV’s allow you to change overscan on a per-input basis. Turn it off for Blu-rays, games, and PC inputs, leave it on for the cable box. I hate that it’s on by default too, but I see why they do it. I’m just glad it’s so easy to turn off.

I still turn it off for my OTA. I mean, it’s their fault for putting stuff there. Doesn’t really annoy me.

It’ll be a while, but I’m gonna get the original version dvd’s again. Of course the smaller picture will suck but there’s a few parts/mistakes I’d like to see again. Like that one painting of a hallway in IV that was painted the wrong way so it looked like the wall and hallway bent when filmed at the wrong angle, in V I wanna see the original emporer, and I can see Sebastian shaw again in VI.

Does anyone know if the OOT disc has the same intro movie as the 2004 DVD? I remember really liking those new CG scenes they made for it so it would be nice to see them again.

If you’re talking about the menus, no. The menus are different.

Author

Oh well, it comes with the 2004 DVD too so I can just put that in when I want to see those intros.

Yeah, I’m surprised no one on myspleen has gotten around to preserving those intros in a 1080 upscale.

Well, instead of ordering 1-3, I’m gonna get the whole saga set. It comes with all the special features and 1-3. Plus the cost is not that much different.

Author

No one should ever buy 1-3 if it doesn’t include 4-6.

Author

And the only real reason to buy 4-6 nowadays is to justify one’s downloading of projects by this forum’s members.

(and just out of curiosity, are you the same MathUser from romhacking.net?)

Yup, I am.

I ordered the Full Saga today but it probably won’t ship till monday. Hopefully I’ll get it by Friday. Should be good to see some new movies since I already watched the heck outta 4-6 with/without commentaries. Plus I can watch some special features too.

Author

Well, it came today. I cant wait to tear into the special features. Especially the OT docs and stuff. I’ll probably watch Ep 1 first.

I finally started watching the extras on the blu ray. OMG, the menu on Ep IV-VI was so decieving. It has things broken up into sections. I thought they were single documentaries about that portion of the movie but they were actually just a section of the extras. Lots of stuff to watch. I liked the prototype Millenium Falcon and the land speeder. The concept art of Han with a light saber and female Luke was interesting too. Luke and Leia were once gonna be combined, I wonder what that story would have beeen like.

The first thing I did was look up how to watch the cartoon from the holiday special. I really hope lucas film releases the whole special on blu ray someday tho. I like extra stuff with people from the OT. Even tho it’s not that good, it can still be good in a bad film kinda way. Plus it’s more footage of the OT cast in new scenes too. Cartoon was great tho.

It took you to get the Blu-rays to finally see those drawings?!

Yeah, I’m in my 30’s but this is the only Star Wars forum/website I go to, so I don’t know all the inside info.

I still refuse to buy the SE Blu Ray. The only Star Wars I own on blu is TFA and I will add Rogue One to the list if I think its good.

Release the OOT and its a day one buy for me. But I won’t give up my hard earned money on badly mastered shit.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I bought the Blu-rays because I love Harmy’s work and I’m not a pirate.

Well, you’re still a pirate, just one that’s slightly less illegal than other pirates.

Nope. No need to.
