I intend to watch New Nightmare at some point in the near future, but I have no interest in the others.

All righty then. #2 is so-bad-it’s-good, pretty hilarious. #s 4 & 5 are forgettable for me. The remake made me angry but Jackie Earle Haley did a decent enough job. Glad you’ll watch New Nightmare as that’s my 2nd favorite.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

Pretty good follow up to The Wrath of Khan, even though it pales in comparison to that film. William Shatner’s acting abilities seem to have disappeared between movies, and the death of his son had little emotional impact, plus a number of minor flaws (plot holes, strange coincidences). Leonard Nimoy’s direction was very good, and the Genesis planet made for an interesting and aesthetically pleasing setting. The plot, while nothing extraordinary, was good, and the characters all felt like themselves. Overall, while nothing amazing, it was an immensely entertaining threequel.

The recasting of Lt. Saavik was a major disappointment. The lighting and cinematography were way off. Star Trek II had such a wonderful warm look and feel to it. In Star Trek III, you can really see the falseness of the sets and props. The blue color tones that seem to dominate the film are cold and bleak. The editing was also off. There was a fan edit done a few years back that re-arranged some scenes and that helped the flow of the film a great deal. The tie-in novelization included much of what I wished would have been included in the movie version.

To be honest, I didn’t even realise she’d been recast. It’s been a while since I’ve seen TWOK though.

The Bandit (2016) 8/10

A real treat if you grew up in the mid 1970’s and are a fan of “Smokey and the Bandit”.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

I didn’t expect much given the ludicrous premise, but… I loved it. William Shatner got his acting chops back, and each member of the Enterprise got something to do. I did wonder though, with all the times they show off their futuristic tech, why didn’t it result in another alternate timeline? But that’s a minor quibble. The movie was charming and irreverent.

You can tweak the past, but as long as you don’t kill anybody, the future is probably safe. I’m sure the investigation into the mysterious Russian captured on board the aircraft carrier Enterprise was closed pretty quickly, and the file buried just as fast. People just don’t vanish from an elevator.

And as long as the kidney lady doesn’t go on to win the lottery, and give all her money to some fellow named Khan Noonien Singh who’s she’s been pen pals with, there’s nothing to worry about. 😉

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Pretty poor. Bad script coupled with a terrible story, stale acting, and terrible production values. Tried to be charming and fun like The Voyage Home but ended up silly and over the top. Overall, boring and cringeworthy.

The movie had trouble behind the scenes and then some. (Jerry Goldsmith turned in a great score as always, and I like those versions of the main theme and Klingon motif.) Shatner has wanted to rework it for years, but Paramount won’t pay for it like they did for the Director’s Edition of TMP.

I was going to start watching The Undiscovered Country, but then I was finally able to see:

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Loved it. Not as good as Into Darkness, but better than the 2009 one. The cast was spectacular as always, and I loved the expanded role for Bones McCoy, and his relationship with Spock. The action scenes were stunning, loved the direction of those, and Simon Pegg and Doug Jung’s script was amusing and interesting. Some parts were a little predictable, and a little cheesy, and the villain was quite underdeveloped, but overall I loved it.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

Wonderful swan song to the Original Series crew. Great story and a lot of fun to watch. All the actors could by this point play the characters in their sleep, so of course they do a great job. All in all, I loved it and it’s probably my second favourite Star Trek film so far.

And with that, I’ve officially watched all of the Original Series movies. I’m not sure if I should go straight to the Next Generation films or wait until I’ve watched some more of the show. What do you guys think?

I would say it’s best to hold off on “Generations” until after viewing the 4th season of TNG. There are some major emotional elements important to a main character’s motivations that is established in an early fourth season episode.
