Damn…

Sad news, little Kenny Baker has died.

(I just saw this over on the ‘deaths’ thread in the ‘Off Topic’ secton)

I just heard that! That’s so sad.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Oh no! : (

I know he looked rather frail in recent photos and was in a wheelchair these days. A damn shame he won’t be around for the 40th anniversary next year.

And worth remembering he played an Ewok too.

It’s also been a long time since we lost a major cast member.

Oh no. 😦 RIP.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Shit…wish he went out in good health but at least he lived a full life.

Aw man… I have his autograph you know… now I’m miserable.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Last night I saw the weirdest epitaph for Baker on another site, and put a picture of prequel CG R2 with it.

“The Beep has ended, but the sound shall linger on for a long time. RIP Kenny Baker”

I wondered if someone would use a CGI Artoo shot by mistake.

I hope Frank Oz enjoys a Yoda life span, but I fear an obituary would use CGI Yoda and footage of his Muppet characters with their current performers.

I think ROTJ Yoda ghost will be the most popular SW image used in that event, hopefully with Hayden cropped out.

Hopefully Hayden will have been forgotten by then.

Which brings me to this: How would we react in the event of a prequel actor dying?

Author

I mean, no different than any other person I had no feelings for whatsoever dying. I wouldn’t jump for joy or anything, that would be low indeed. But nor would I be particularly sad, just as is the case when some famous musician I don’t listen to dies.

I would hope people here would react in a mature fashion. It’s silly to hold any ill will toward any of the actors in the prequels. They did the best with the script and direction they were given.

The space battle at the end does feel like old school Star Wars though.

You mean the part where the 5 year old takes out an entire armada of ships with his nifty spinning trick? It’s a juvenile film that would be tolerable as a juvenile film without Jar Jar and the Gungans. Those guys just make it entirely unwatchable.

In all other respects though, TPM is superior to the other two prequels imo.

Gonna have to agree with you here. The lightsaber battle was the best thing of this part—it is pretty nifty.

Agreed.

Watch the video. Not only is the “fight” more like a dance but the choreography doesn’t make any sense. Say what you will about the OT duels but at least the choreography in ESB and ROTJ were actually reminiscent of people fighting. And that goes doubly for TFA.

Author

Yeah but everyone knows that TFA is shit because Luke might have been a myth and Daisy made a squirrelface.

Well it’s not perfect, but it’s a heck of a lot better than any of the fights on ep. II & III. It’s a bit clunky at times, but at least you feel like they’re genuinely trying to hurt each other. Unlike II and III in which they just frantically swing their glow sticks in some of the most obviously rehearsed fight scenes ever made. TPM may have some flaws but it’s duel is far more believable than the sequels.

I would say that applies a lot more to ep. II and III. The OT duels feel like real fighting, TPM feel like slightly exaggerated fighting, and AOTC and ROTS just feel like glow-stick ballets.

This feels a heck of a lot more genuine than this.

(I mean seriously, what the heck are they doing in the ROTS click? At least in the TPM fight you feel like Obi-Wan wants ro actually hurt Maul rather than just showing off his lightsaber swirling skills. I especially like his little blind swipe at Maul as he runs away. That feel very genuine too me.)

I still like it, so I reiterate:

Old school in that it’s physical models and explosions. It’s only been fairly recently that CGI ships made me think I was looking at a real vehicle with weight to it. There’s one stardestroyer shot in the Rogue One trailer that had me believing the original model had been used.

JEDIT: I had to dig back through nearly 30 pages to even find my original post on that! 😉
