When oh when will they feature hot man-on-goat love in Trek? They are supposed to be progressive. Children and suggestable teens need to understand that their parents who DARE to object are PURE EVIL and deserve to SUFFER AND DDDIIIEEEEEEE!!!

Close enough? 😉

yeah, I got a bad feeling about that show. I think it is a mistake to have it in the original universe.

  1. that universe no longer exists due to the events in Star Trek 09. Therefore, they are technically doing a whole series that never happened.

  2. I think it will confuse people who are not fully into Star Trek yet. This this will especially happen if they do what they are planing in the 2nd season(have interaction with TOS characters).

The lead not being a Captain? how is that going to work? If she is in command of the Starship, how will they explain the lack of the Captain rank? If someone else is the Captain, just how will it work with the lead being the first officer?

and again, I still think it is a mistake to not have this on regular network tv.

The Prime Universe and Kelvin Timeline are two separate, co-existing universes.

That is not my understanding of things. I thought that the events in Star Trek 09 changed history and turned the Prime Universe into the Universe of the new movies.

That’s like telling someone they shouldn’t watch TNG because it never happened according to the J-brams films. The original universe still exists. That’s why the current film series timeline was given a specified name. There are two alternate timelines existing in ST cannon.

EDIT: I guess I typed to slow…

There is a difference between a show set in a universe that ceases to exist due to something made after the show and show that takes place in a universe that already has ceased to exist due to something made before the show.

The original universe still exists. That’s why the current film series timeline was given a specified name. There are two alternate timelines existing in ST cannon.

Every official statement from the people-that-be claim otherwise.

I guess I am wrong then, but Star Trek 09 sure makes it look like the original universe turned in the Universe of the new movies.

Sure, we experience time as a contiguous series of cascading events but perception and reality aren’t always the same thing. Spock’s incursion from the Prime Universe created a multidimensional reality shift. The rift in space/time created an entirely new reality in all directions, top to bottom, from the Big Bang to the end of everything. As such this reality was, is and always will be subtly different from the Prime Universe. I don’t believe for one second that Gene Roddenberry wouldn’t have loved the idea of an alternate reality (Mirror, Mirror anyone?). This means, and this is absolutely key, the Kelvin universe can evolve and change in ways that don’t necessarily have to follow the Prime Universe at any point in history, before or after the events of Star Trek ‘09, it can mutate and subvert

Also, from Star Trek Online, the official continuation of the Prime Universe. In reference to a new quest line that lets you travel to the Kelvin Universe:

The sheer destruction from the Hobus supernova has weakened the barrier between our reality and one strangely similar to our own, leaving a strange temporal anomaly in its wake. This anomaly serves as a gateway between our universe… and a quantum universe both similar and different to our own.

Soooooo…

  • a gay character? Sounds OK if they will make it interesting.
  • a female lead? Sounds OK if they make her interesting.
  • thinking about how “diverse” she should be? If I was “non-white” I would probably find it offensive. NO STAR TREK FAN CARES about the skin colour of the main protagonist. We want a good actress playing a well written character! Thinks like gender / race / sexual orientation should NOT be the “defining attributes” of a character
  • 10 years before TOS? I think that’s a horrible idea. That will bring it between The Cage and TOS and way too far from Enterprise. I was secretly hoping for either a post-Enterprise era, maybe even the Romulan War, where Archer would be basically the new show’s Admiral Forrest. Or something post-Nemesis, maybe a USS Titan show under the command of Captain Riker. Or something between TOS and TNG would be great. But they’ve chosen the most boring possibility.
  • making the main lead NOT a captain - I think it’s a very interesting idea and if it’s done correctly it has the potential to be really great.
  • making it serialized instead of episodic - I don’t know what to think yet. The Star Trek format has been always episodic, this is way too different. But I did like the 3rd season of Enterprise, so let’s hope it will be good.
  • forcing me to get Netflix ONLY for this - I hate you for this.

Star Trek : Insurrection - 5/10
Star Trek : Nemesis - 0/10

Think of the Kelvin Timeline as another Mirror Universe. It’s always been there, always been different, it just so happens that our Spock got stuck there.

As for the lead not being a Captain, there’s a lot of possibilities there. From what I understand, The West Wing started out focusing on everyone but the President. Or think of “Lower Decks” or similar episodes, which explored what life was like for non-senior staff members, which could make for an interesting series. Or the senior staff is wiped out in the first 10 minutes and she’s the highest ranking person on board.

POLITICS ALERT

I always am amazed at how many white people think they know what minorities should or shouldn’t think about a given subject.

I’m also amazed when someone thinks all fans of a a given franchise are the same.

I know a bunch of “non-white” Star Trek fans, and they are PUMPED for news like this, every time. Because, sadly, it’s still hard to find a character in fiction who represents them, who their kids can see themselves as.

If you rate 09 a 0/10, why even bother with STID or Beyond?

For the same reason why I watched Attack of The Clones after The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Shit after Attack of the Clones. I just hope the next one will be better, and I liked Into Darkness on that “so bad it’s funny” level, so I hope I will at least “like” Beyond

Exactly!

This new series seems to be doing a number of things that make me excited, moving away from traditional aspects of Trek series.

I think you will, Pittrek. It’s not perfect, but it felt like good old TOS to me. Even Chris Pine’s hairdo is going Shatner, but in a good way. 😉
