well for example i get a skip at 41.20 as vader enters leia's cell - do you have that or is it just me?

also one around 20.56?

I get the same thing.  Almost like a hiccup that will freeze a frame for a split second and then go forward 2-3 frames.

Kind of like when your PC is pegged on CPU and is constantly trying to play catch up.

Weird! Can you try it in a DVD player?

I won't be able to look until very late tonight.

Odd. I watched 41:15 - 41:21 (or so) several times and paid close attention to 41:20.

Nothing whatsoever is wrong on my file. It's smooth.

My experience was also using VLC.  May be something there that is having trouble with the MPEG2 stream.

another weird thing is when i look at the file lengths of individual the vob files some say 0.00. maybe thats whats confusing vlc?

I'm curious. What do the pros use to encode and play back digital video files (not tapes)?

I'd love to have access to that stuff, because I don't see why the average person should have to struggle with files that will only play properly in very specific environments, or have bugs in them thanks to unstable encoding software.

Any encoding bugs in the MPEG2 stream were caused by my DVD recorder (Panasonic DMR-ES10). As I've mentioned earlier, the most recent release is a quick-and-dirty VCR->DVD Recorder capture; no post-processing was done.

It played fine in VLC on my desktop computer, so I didn't see any need to re-encode it, but I do regret not doing so now.

Also, don't forget that if it's free, then the "average person" shouldn't complain about having to put in some extra legwork. It's an inherent part of the deal.

Thank you so much for this resource AntcuFaalb, for the most part the colors are great, and it's nice to see that there appears to be more color consistency between shots than even in the Blu-ray.

However I did notice a heavy green in the shadows of most shots in the movie. Sometimes this looks accurate to my sources, but sometimes it seems like fading or something. In your opinion, do you think the film could have been this green, or did something happen along the line?

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Indeed, I'll echo what others have already said, thanks for sharing!

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

The green cast is in every one of my captures of PS78, unfortunately. (My capture setups are all calibrated to an accurate reference source, so it's not a problem on my end.)

I'm not sure what caused it, but I definitely don't think that the film could have been that green. It must have happened sometime during the initial transfer back in 1978.

We might be able to get rid of it in a way that doesn't interfere with the accuracy of the colors. Step #1 would be for us to find a completely black frame from the film.

The fade-to-black when Luke takes C-3PO and R2-D2 into the homestead would probably work well.

Let me know if you're interesting in moving past this point.

The fade-to-black doesn't actually fade to black on VLC for me. It just crosscuts with a green haze or skips some frames altogether. That's the unstable video I guess. But any other point where the frame is mostly black, such as the end of the title crawl, the image suddenly lightens to white. Why would that be?

Just playing around with some frames in Photoshop got the picture looking a lot better. Of course it's not accurate but it kind of shows what seems to be off about the transfer. There's too much blue in the red which makes skin tones turn pink as well as the excess green:

If you have black frames on your end it may be worth searching for accurate color, I'd say.

The transfer from film to VHS way back in 77-78 was accomplished by a method that looks very much like time-compression. A good analogy would be transferring 24p film to 59.94i video by projecting the film on a wall at 24 frames per second and recording it with an NTSC video camera at 59.94 fields per second.

This process results in each and every frame being an average of several of its temporal neighbors.

In consequence, bright->dark shot-changes are blown-out and dark->bright shot-changes are crushed for the first few frames until the "average" events out to the overall brightness of the shot. Rinse, repeat.

Does this make any sense?

EDIT: Also, some shot-changes just go crazy. I imagine that this is due to the automatic gain circuitry in the VCR used to make the copy (remember: this tape is 2nd gen) from the master.

That makes sense. So if there are no truly black frames because of the gain, could part of a frame be used, such as the black areas around the Lucasfilm logo?

There are probably a few truly black frames in sequences with lots of black frames; e.g., fades to black.

I'll look around sometime soon.

Hello. Hope this is an appropriate thread to post this query and associated images.

This last 34 years, I've had a 4x3 letterboxed pre-ANH version of Star Wars on a VHS tape. The original tape from which my copy was copied was purchased in Malaysia in '79 or '80. From my research into the various soundtracks, this one bears the hallmarks of the 'mono' mix.

Of all the screencaps from various boots I've seen to date, none seem to show the version that I have. The images below are captures from the MPEG-2 digital transfer I made of my VHS tape.

Can anyone advise me of the 'popular name' that's been given to this particular version? Or provide additional info.

Wow thanks so much for posting about this. Are the Dutch(?) subtitles on the original tape? If so this might mean its got its own unique lineage from the bootlegs found/shared before on this site. The first pleasing thing about these screenshots is theres no pink distortion from dubbing which effected one of the bootlegs and also the detail seems nice.

Feel free to start your own thread with this and post more screenshots or any other differences you have noticed.

Nice job keeping this all that time!

So how can I find this currently? Is it now a torrent or is this a vhs preservation project from vhs to DVD?

Wolfcarnage, if you are on myspleen, just go there and search ps78 and you’ll find it. And there’s a few seeders so you should be able to get it.
If you don’t have an account, I could probably get it and put it somewhere you can have access…

In any case, I’m glad you posted that question. I’m relatively new to this site and your post caused me to notice this thread. Ended up reading the whole 19 pages (though glossed over a lot of the technical posts as its all way over my head). Anyway, it was a really cool read. And so much hard work by AntcuFaalb.

Anyway, I don’t think I’d get it to watch it. As I said, its kinda out of my realm of understanding, and I’m too much of a noob to appreciate it like many others have in this thread.

I’m more interested to know, was this used to help with other versions of releases (like Harmy’s, etc). There was talk in the thread that the colours (and maybe other things?) can be used as a reference for other projects, did that end up happening?

Thanks.

Hello. This Deinterlace methods correct?? (VirtualDub)

Filter list:

telecide 1.3.0 (all unchecked, treshold: 0)
2dcomb 1.0a (YUV/interlaced)
Deinterlace - area based v1.4 (tresh 27, edge 25, blend)
AlparySoft Deinterlace (Are based motion estimation) v2.0.295.060413 (This filter ShareWare!)

Denoising issues:
Neat Video V2.22 (Progressive, Temporal, 1, -40%, Intra-frame filter: used preconfigured Device Noise Profile and various Denoise Filter settings) This filter Demo/Shareware!
MSU Denoiser v2.5.1 (Auto, Bilateral, Use GPU, automatic noise…/careful noise… unchechked, Spatial 5-10, Photometric 80)

Very high (or low?) frequency noise not totally killed. This Denosing very hard, minimally killing small/low dimmed details from images.

PS78 RAW (MPEG2, grabbed from Vdub)

RAW

PS78 Denoised (grabbed from Vdub)

Denoised

My PC extremely old and slow. Rendering rate 1-1.2fps! (Two Disc VOB files joined from one MPG file, without reencoding and frame accurate editing. Size: 8226710 kB, required codec from saveing cleaned video use MJPEG. This MJPEG version encode from finally xvid/x264 AVIs/MKVs.)

Vdub Rendering

Newest PCs (Core-i3-5) rendering rate probably ~5-10fps calculated. This various Vdub filters not Multithread(ed) compatible/version. (except 1-2 filters)

Do you know how this tape was made? Apologies if I missed the specific explanation somewhere. Anyways, if someone simply pointed their vhs video camera at the projected screen, you might have had things like auto exposure, auto white balance come into play.

Also, could you repost what was your equipment used again? Or a link to a picture, pictures referenced no longer show up. Like on page 6 you mentioned having a tv tuner. Was this a digital capture to a computer or a straight copy to a dvd recorder? (or both?) You mentioned using virtual dub (computer program) and also a Panasonic ES-10 (dvd recorder).
Interestingly I almost purchased a ES-10 last winter but went with a EA-18 because the 10 didn’t have a firewire input and advice in the videohelp forum mentioned it didn’t quite have full resolution (704/480 vs 720x480). I was also told the ES-10 had automatic DNR that could not be turned off during recording.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77
