Even after 7 months, I believe THE FORCE AWAKENS still holds up as one of the best SW films yet. What I wouldn’t give for a theatrical re-release with ROGUE ONE. It was the best cinema going experience I’ve ever had – despite the film being letterboxed and on a tiny screen. Only doing IMAX from here on out with SW films.

Agreed. Maybe we’ll see a theatrical re release of all the films after Episode IX.

Or maybe just before IX comes out…

The ending is still incredible. Curious as to what everyone’s reaction was with the Luke Skywalker reveal? I recall the crowd in the theater being very quiet (and most likely surprised) and not clapping until the credits. All the other returning characters were given a huge reaction.

The ending is exactly what it should have been for the plot that was written. I am not mad that he didn’t speak either because it builds hype for what will be said during Rey and Luke’s first meeting. As if I needed another reason to be hyped up for Episode VIII 😉

Another possibility.

I got a little verklempt when I saw Luke. That was a moment I’d been imagining for decades, and never thought I would actually see. And Mark said more with his face than a dozen lines of dialog could ever convey.

Say that to George Lucas.

Is it okay for me to say that it’s time to unpin this from the top of the General Star Wars Discussion board?

Author

No. We’ll do that when Rogue One gets released I guess.

It’s fun looking back on the experience. Had all my Star Wars gear on that opening night while trudging through a line outside the theatre. My anticipation was unmatched at that point by any other movie. The crowd cheered and laughed plenty. I went out of the theatre with a few minor issues, but still was thoroughly satsified. After watching Chris Stuckmanns “The Star Wars Forumula” video it shows why I think the whole “it’s basically ANH” argument makes no sense. It even pulls off certain similar elements of the story better than ANH. I still prefer ANH over TFA but to this day, I truly have fell in love with these new characters and am sooooo happy we have ourselves another worthy entry into the franchise 😃

Bring on episode 8!!!

P.S I think now that I love the new characters so much, and am anticipating Mark Hamill returning as Luke Skywalker, I can say that episode 8 might even be more anticipated than episode 7 for me.

There is a lengthy comment on Film Crit Hulk’s TFA essay (http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/06/28/star-wars-the-force-alluded-to) from soletsgettothepoint that I think is worth summarizing and expounding on. They claim that TFA works as a meta-analysis of Star Wars, and the problems of bringing this property back to the big screen after a decade of near-dormancy. For this analysis, Finn can be seen as the symbol for Disney, Rey is Abrams as well as exemplifying the Good side of the Star Wars fan, Kylo exemplifies the dark side of the Star Wars fan, and Han represents George Lucas.

In summary:

The commenter makes the point that Finn wonders why everyone wants to go back to Jakku (read: Tatooine), as if Disney wants to branch out from the same places in the Star Wars universe and make the most of an entire galaxy. Rey still holds out hope that her family (read: George Lucas) will still return for her, though she certainly knows better. She is delusional, but understandably so. It amuses me that Rey is a scavenger of other people’s property and her efforts lead to ever diminishing returns (‘last week it was a half-portion each’). The Falcon represents the original spirit of Star Wars, which ‘hasn’t flown in years’. It is off to a shaky start, and is put through more abuse in this film than in all of the other films combined, but it proves quite resilient. The commenter pointed out that since Han is George Lucas, the Rathtar sequence takes on a whole new meaning. From the commenter: ‘There was a specific reason that there were THREE very dangerous rathtars trying to kill everyone on board. They called the one famous rathtar attack before that a “tragedy.”’ I’d also note that Rey, the ‘good’ star wars fan, is blissfully unaware of the tragic Rathtar attack. I wonder now if making the Rathtars look obviously CG was intentional.

Further thoughts:

I wonder if Rey had an absurd number of magical competencies because she is the epitome of the Star Wars fan, someone who believes that they can do magical things if they simply believe in themselves enough. Rey isn’t realistic, but then again, neither are Star Wars fans. They are naively hoping for a Star Wars that cannot realistically exist, but they keep believing regardless. Kylo is the opposite of Rey, in that nothing is ever good enough for him. He is the offspring of George Lucas, but his greatness is the result of George’s wife, Marcia, though he never mentions her. So who/what does Snoke represent? What about Hux? Where does Poe fit in all of this? It’s a fun theory, so what do you think?

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I haven’t seen this since the theatre and I barely remember any of it. It didn’t go beyond being mildly entertaining for me, and didn’t leave me excited for the sequels. I will see them, but I’m not excited about them.

Well, some theaters have been reportedly testing Men In Black style memory erasure devices to increase business. 😉

The funny thing is I can’t even access your threads because the URL is too large. Just fuck off man.

Not enough people read the EU.

It’s not your fault. It’s HansiG/Wario 64’s fault

Kinda funny because I’ve only created three threads and they all have names of a few words or less.

This text is brillant and explains many things I’ve been takling about here: http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/06/28/star-wars-the-force-alluded-to

Thanks for sharing the link, a pretty long read 😄 . Here are my thoughts about it:
-I don’t think “Hulk” should’ve tried to find special meanings behind Abram’s directing: I may be wrong, but it looks to me that he mostly follows a pattern, always making sure each scene has funny lines, drama, action and references to previous movies, which is probably why sometimes his characters’ actions feel forced or not really impactful;
-I agree some scenes felt too short, like Poe’s “death”, they could’ve used a bit more build up and drama;
-actually I like the way the lighting is staged during Han’s death scene, but I agree the scene needed more build up to work at its best;
-yes, we could’ve definitely used more background informations about what’s going on in the Galaxy and the Republic;
-absolutely, I agree the movie itself relied too much on nostalgia.

When Poe supposedly died was so early on in the film that making it a huge thing would have felt weird. Now if he dies in VIII or IX then make it a big thing because the audience would have spent a lot more time getting to know him.

I always thought Poe should have died in TFA.

No way, he was a great but underused character and I look forward to seeing his role expanded in VIII.
