They committed an atrocity sure but they’re governing body and destroyed Alderaan in the hopes it would be enough to have sustainable peace. It’s all about point of view

Blowing up a pacifist planet is a pretty weird way to justify maintaining peace.
Tarkin even admits that Alderaan isn’t a "military target."
Yavin, Dantooine, and the Death Star, those are military targets.
