do the general public in the SW universe know that the Empire is being run by a Sith lord?

They know that Vader is a Sith Lord, but they don’t know that Palpatine is a Sith Lord. They think Palpatine is a figurehead controlled by Mas Amedda, Vader, and Tarkin.

So we may have our first look at what the rogue one Vader suit will look like thanks to sideshow collectibles booth at San Diego Comic Con.

They have two statues (one life size and one “legendary scale” that I think is like 1/3 or 1/2 scale) on display that are rather odd ducks. They seem to be a mish mash between the original beat up looking suit more polished look from ESB. There’s nothing actually confirming that this is the RO Vader, but I can’t imagine what else it could be.

Things that match ANH: The helmet has the widows peak and small chin vent like the original, the tunic goes over the chest armor, the chest box looks like the original (less detailed, grey and white “switches” along the bottom, etc.), and the gloves have the same stitching pattern as in ANH, although they seem to be longer going further up the forearm.

Things that match ESB: The armor, including the helmet is very polished and glossy. The shoulder bells hanging from the chest armor are all black (in ANH they were two toned black and gun metal). The chest box lights up in a similar fashion (the two colored boxes and the coin slots all have lights).

Basically it physically looks very much like the ANH suit but with the paint job and lights from ESB. I actually think it looks pretty good. I would’ve preferred that it be a totally accurate recreation of the ANH suit, warts and all, but I never expected that. This is certainly an acceptable compromise IMO.

I’ll try to post pics when I can if no ne beats me to it.

sigh I’m having trouble posting the pics using my tablet. I’m doing it right with the markdown syntax, but these pics are from rebelscum and they way their image galleries work make it seemingly impossible to grab the actual image url from the webpage. The only workaround I’ve found is to copy the images to my device and rehost them elsewhere and that’s just too much work right now. So here’s the links. It’s the best I’ve got right now.

Interesting. For the sake of consistency, I really hope they went with the straight SW77 suit. But your theory lines up with what we know they’ve done with the classic Stormtrooper armor. Keeping the essence of what makes that version what it is while enhancing certain aspects for our current HD world. Here’s John Knoll discussing this at Celebration, with photos. I highly recommend checking out that entire panel, it was packed with pure gold.

I’m honestly loving most of the costume design for Rogue One so far.

That suit more-or-less fits my mental image of what Vader’s original suit of armour looked like before wear and tear reduced it to the lustreless version seen in the original film, so I like it regardless of the lacking continuity

Still, they should’ve preserved the red lenses.

Those are red lenses, they’re just very dark. This is very similar to your reaction to Thrawn not having red eyes when he in fact did. You might want to check your monitor’s calibration. =P

Jedit: Here are two of the photos with the contrast and brightness enhanced to highlight the lenses:

Maybe it gets worn and torn throughout Rogue One.

Since my screen seems to dim itself for some untold reason, you’re probably right.

Thanks for the pics ! Darth always looks awesome, and I tend to easily forgive minors inconsistencies from one movie to another, but not continuity issues within the same movie. So I don’t mind if the outfit in not an exact recreation of the one he wore in ANH, if it captures the same “spirit” it might do the trick. The Imperial part being the only one i’m pretty confident about for Rogue one.

Donnie Yen confirms that Jedha is in the new canon where you get lightsaber crystals (he technically only referred to “resources” but I hardly see what else it could be). So there’s probably something to the fan speculations that Jedha will be the source for the crystals used in the Death Star canon, hence its importance to the plot.

I’m probably not the first to point this out but this pilot:

Kinda bears a resemblance to this X-Wing pilot who gets killed in ROTJ:

Their mustaches are clearly different though, it’s most likely just some coincidence and not the same character. Just some observation I made.

The Vader suit helmet looks like an ESB helmet, cant really see the asymmetry there.

The ESB helmet is just as asymmetrical as the ANH. They use the same facemask (with a larger chin vent cut for ESB). ESB just had a shinier paint job and a slightly modified dome (no widows peak, thinner walls).

JEDIT
Looking at the lifesize statue at the sideshow booth, it’s facemask has the same lopsidedness as the original. I’m sure it’s probably more cleaned up and sanitized if you get up close to see every detail. But the mouth area droops to one side and the left cheek (our right) curves up at the top outer corner while the right cheek (our left) curves down. All of these things match the original.

Cool observation.

I did like how excited that guy was to drop into the seat of an X-Wing in the trailer.

Looks like they used flat lenses for Vader again instead of OT’s bubble-shaped eyes.

Me not like this.

Author

Uh… Nope. Those lenses definately have the classic bubble shape.

And I feel like I should reiterate we don’t know that this is actually the RO Vader. That purely speculation/educated guessing. All we know for sure is that sideshow has two statues in different scales on display that look pretty much identical and they are both a mash-up of ANH and ESB designs.

On my phone so no pics, but I just noticed the dark trooper or whatever they’re being called has a cod piece very reminiscent of Vader’s, just plastic instead of leather. And their belt buckle is the same as Vader’s minus the circle piece.
