What on Earth did China object to in the film?

China’s official censorship guidelines technically prohibit movies that “promote cults or superstition” — a holdover from the Communist Party’s secular ideology — and the country’s regulators occasionally have been known to use this obscure provision as rationale for banning films that feature ghosts or supernatural beings in a semi-realistic way (Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest suffered such a fate in 2006, thanks to its depictions of ghouls and cannibalism).

The original Bill Murray-starring 1984 classic, which never screened theatrically in China,

“It’s been confirmed that Ghostbusters won’t be coming to China, because they think it’s not really that attractive to Chinese audiences,” says one Chinese executive. “Most of the Chinese audience didn’t see the first and second movies, so they don’t think there’s much market for it here.”

I bet it’s because Melissa McCarthy has publicly stated that she thinks the United States should’ve used nuclear weapons on China during the Korean War.

Source? I have not been able to find this.

And the franchise already sucks without this remake. The 1984 Ghostbusters is the only thing with the title that’s slightly watchable*.

Excuse me? Both animated series were great, the video game basically was Ghostbusters 3 and pretty dang good. And I’m just starting into the IDW ongoing comic series but so far it’s been really good too.

That’s fine if you think so, but it’s no fact. I was the target age group for The Real Ghostbusters cartoon in the 80’s and never liked it. It’s nothing like the movie. I’m too old to have any interest in the other kids show. The video game was lame. It was nice to hear the original cast, but Murry’s delivery sounds SO forced and the script mostly repeats lines from the films.
It’s fine if you enjoy those things, nothin’ wrong with that at all, but none of the other Ghostbusters products capture the tone or feeling of the 1984 movie at all and that’s fact.

The Real Ghostbusters was objectively great and that’s fact.

She also believes that the United States should bring back the Chinese Exclusion Act of years past.

I like how I asked for something to back up that claim, and your answer was to give me a different claim that I am also unable to confirm.

She also has been known to say that the United States was on the wrong side of World War II.

Yeah ok. You’re hilarious. The fact that I believed you believed these things at first says more about you than me.

I can see why you would think so.

I can’t see why you would think so, though. Does this apply to Donald Trump? The fact that he even thinks that Mexico isn’t sending their best says more about Mexicans than it does about him! I know that you’re the brilliant genius here, so correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like a shady line of reasoning for someone who’s supposedly not into this whole “broad brush” thing.

You say things like this all the time and usually you aren’t joking. So of course I believed you were being serious. If I was constantly missing your obvious jokes, that would say more about me. The fact that this one time it was a joke and usually it isn’t, that’s why it says more about you than me. The Trump argument you just made has nothing to do with it.

Yet they allowed TFA. I’m sure if I dug around deeply enough, I’d find a spooky Chinese ghost movie made in China.

Like bootlegs of the movie won’t be sold there. Silly Commies!

I’m not aware of saying anything more ridiculous than Melissa McCarthy being in favor of a nuclear strike on China.

Fixed to include what you actually said. If you said she wanted to nuke China now then that would have been obvious.

Melissa McCarthy doesn’t strike me as someone who is opinionated on the subject of the Korean War, or bringing back the Chinese Exclusion Act for that matter.

The Person in Question

Me neither. If I had said that Jon Voight favored a nuclear strike on China during the Korean War then perhaps I could understand your misunderstanding. Melissa McCarthy?

The Person in Question

She is a direct descendent of Joseph McCarthy, though. The Communist Chinese don’t want to release any film that has such a direct tie to America’s anti-communist movement.

If the average American moviegoer doesn’t know who she’s related to, and why that relative is infamous, why would a Chinese moviegoer know?

Sounds reasonable.

Yeah, it does. She’s the last person I’d expect to be overly opinionated on the use of nuclear weapons during the Korean War.

If you don’t follow her, there’s no reason to have any expectation either way.
