I tend to watch the SE sometimes

Author
Time

I watch the despecialized more than any other release. it is also my favorite. but sometimes i like to watch the SE. here’s a few reasons why: 1. I like pointing out the changes 2. I like seeing some difference back and forth, watch both at the same time and see the differences. 3. It just interests me. what do you do?

I used to do that, but that was before I found this site.

Yep, before it was a choice between watching Star Wars in acceptable modern quality on DVD or Blu-ray, or digging out my old VHS tapes. (I wasn’t even aware of the GOUT.) So I would bite the bullet and watch the SE. But in truth for a long time, thanks to my disillusionment with the SE and the prequels, I basically stopped being a Star Wars fan. I wasn’t happy about it, and it wasn’t even something I consciously did, my enthusiasm for the series just kind of faded away. I hadn’t seen the movies in years until TFA and my discovery of this site re-ignited it. The Despecialized Editions were one hell of a treat.

After TFA I pretty much gave up on calling myself a “fan”. I like the first three movies. As a franchise I don’t care.

Given the choice I’ll watch the OUT regardless of the format. However, certain times I may watch the SE’s. If it’s on TV and there’s nothing else on why not. Also had Lucasfilm gone through with releasing the entire saga in 3D I likely would have gone to it regardless the version. I went to the 3D version of TPM more out of loyalty to the franchise if anything even if it wasn’t particularly the SW film Id prefer to see.

I have never thought of myself a fan or not a fan of any particular franchise. I like certain movies and others I don’t. For example, I probably like about half of the Star Trek movies, doesn’t matter to me which ones (i.e. in what order).

As a person who likes the 1997 SE (but hates the 2004 and 2011 versions) I used to watch my SE VHS tapes before my VCR died

Oh come on, no one on this site is not a Star Wars fan, whether you call yourself one or not. If you weren’t a fan you wouldn’t even care about practically anything discussed here. You might not be a fanboy, but you’re a fan.

True. How in depth we can get on this site is pretty astounding. What’s even more astounding is how much I care about it haha

It’s great there’s a website though like this where there are other fans who like Star Wars to that degree 😃

You can be a fan of the movie Star Wars, that would make you a Star Wars fan, but it doesn’t mean you care about the whole franchise.

Perhaps so, but you’re still a Star Wars fan of some kind. My point is you don’t have to like everything, or even most things, with the Star Wars name on it to be a Star Wars fan. Just like I don’t have to agree with everything America does to call myself an American.

Besides, I don’t think that applies to most members of this site. We call it Original Trilogy, not Original Movie, you know.

Frink didn’t say he was not a Star Wars fan he said he wasn’t a fan of it as a franchise.

^That was Moviefreaked.
The thing with me is, when someone asks if I’m a Star Wars fan, i just say “I love the original three movies.” Otherwise it’s assumed that I like a heap of crap.
It also depends where I am. If I’m at a baseball game, I’m actually more inclined to talk a little Star Wars with a stranger than I am at the comic book store. If I’m someplace even remotely nerdy, I deny Star Wars like Peter n’ Jesus. To them, those original three movies are 1) a small part of a much larger franchise and 2) now so full of changes that they no longer look, sound or give the feeling they once did.
Also, I feel like I hate non-OT Star Wars more than most around here and telling someone that I’m a Star Wars fan and then leaving them to assume that I like Revenge Of The Sith and Jedi Rocks is something I just can’t do.

I completely agree. I have never liked anything other than the Original Trilogy. Even in the build-up to the prequel mania I couldn’t stand all of the books and magazines and other stuff that was being pushed everywhere.

It’s kind of refreshing to watch the SE now and again. I do that every once in a while.

It’s frustrating whenever I tell someone I enjoy Return of the Jedi. They automatically assume I enjoy Jedi Rocks, Vaders “Noooo!” And Hayden’s ghost. I have to proceed to a lengthy explanation of the versions I watch (Theatrical) and how they also are what was originally released in theatres.

And it’s hard because I enjoy the fanedited prequels but hate episodes 1 and 2 in their theatrical form. Since that’s all that most people know, I always have to remember to tell them that I hate them and don’t mildly enjoy them (when fanedited correctly by people like Hal and L8wtr).

That’s a hard one for me as well. I legitimately enjoy the prequels as fan edits, but I have to usually just say I hate them. Explaining to somebody fan edits usually isn’t worthwhile or worth it.

In fact I’ve come to think that If I really like a fan edited PT (and quite conservative ones such as Hal’s versions of TPM and AOTC - ROTS is already a good SW in its theatrical form, TLOE improves it but it’s not as night and day as AOTC/TAS), it probably means I don’t hate the theatrical versions that much (as a matter of fact I used to like TPM and I even thought after te first screening in 2002 that AOTC was good - the same happened 13 years later with TFA…). So I usually say that I don’t like the official versions, but I enjoy a recut where the lame parts are removed.

Original theatrical versions all the way. I’m a big fan of 70s tv shows and movies in general so when I watch Star Wars I want to be able to see it as a 70s movie and not some super touched up modernized version that tries to fix what was never broken to begin with.
