I mean, it’s not the OUT, but provided it isn’t the DCP used for the Blu-Rays I’ll be happy! Gotta get my tickets soon as they go on sale.

I was banned from cinemas after my antics during the 1997 screening of ROTJ’s SE.

I’ve been obsessed with this change for nearly 20 years. When I first saw the Special Edition of Jedi I couldn’t wait to see this moment on the big screen. Imagine my dismay when I saw that the scene had been ruined and the vanishing TIE fighters “fixed”! I stood up in the middle of the theatre and screamed, “that’s bullshit!” and I threw my popcorn on the floor, and walked out; I even made sure to throw my soda at the screen before storming out of the theatre. I also demanded my money back at the front box office. They just ignored me though and told my mother that she needed to control her young.

They may be less forgiving of an adult doing the same so I won’t chance it.

My projectionist friend says that Drafthouse insists it’s a DCP, which means it’s still more than likely the 2004 SE and they just aren’t aware there’s a difference.

More than likely even though they explicitly specify it’s the “original” '97 SE?

Maybe these are the new Reliance scans. Scanning the '97 negative is the obvious first step in creating a (long overdo) new master for the OT (OUT, SE, '04 or otherwise).

Unless they’re planning a wider, home media release of the '97 (which I doubt), if these are 4k DCPs, maybe its release in the '97 format—the current state of the negatives—is a sign from Lucasfilm to let us know “hey, we hear you, and we’re working in something.”

This will never happen. I’d bet my entire savings that it will never happen, ever. Even if it does, I’m not out anything because I’d probably die of shock.

This August, the Alamo Drafthouse will celebrate our love for the movie trilogy that changed so many of our lives for the better, with incredibly rare digital screenings of the special edition versions of A NEW HOPE, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and THE RETURN OF THE JEDI.

Boo, looks like they had to cave.

I guess this will go the same way as those other screening two or three years ago: The 2011 Blu Ray Special Editions. Sad.

They certainly won’t do a standalone release of the 97, but I don’t think it’s out of the question at all that it’s included as part of a Blade Runner-esque box of all cuts of the OT.

That’s certainly been my preferred scenario for a while now. I know most people would be overjoyed enough to finally have a properly restored OOT, but the ‘97 version provides the proper historical context for Lucas’ revising of the films in the first place and would be conspicuously absent in a “definitive” collection.

They still show the '97 prints at the AFI Silver from time to time, although I don’t pay super close attention to the schedule. A couple years back they were showing ANH as part of an Alec Guinness series and RotJ as part of a collection of 80’s movies they would change up every summer (they finally moved on to the 90’s this year, maybe they’ll show a print of TPM at some point😆).

But no, GL just had to replace the voice. It was so incredibly important and necessary!!!

They’re his movies and he can do what he wants to with them.

So if I buy the declaration of Independence I can eat it the fourth of July?

It’s your Declaration of Independence. It was “Bingo’s Vision” to eat them.

That’s capitalism, baby. Welcome to Nixonland America.

Following the scenario that the OUT could be restored one day, I don’t think simply releasing the OUT as is, not counting extras, would not be a sufficient way to appeal to the fans. If its strictly the OUT, SE fans will complain or not buy into it and vice versa. To target a bigger fanbase into buying these films again, including multiple cuts would be a good selling point. Restoring the '97 SE’s would be welcoming to some fans since many consider them the most acceptable of all the revised versions. We’ll have to see I guess.

We have to keep in mind that Reliance MediaWorks is currently restoring Star Wars in 4K. I don’t know if it is finished yet and I don’t know if it’s the OT or the SE either.

I don’t want it to happen purely because it would only serve to drive up the price. It’s a selfish line of thought, but what can I say?

In an ideal world, they should release the OUT as a standalone for those who just want that, and a deluxe box with the various SE cuts as extras for the mega fans. The former has appeal even to those who aren’t mega fans, as the OUT cuts were the ones that were absorbed into pop culture and that most people saw first. Not to mention most agree they’re just plain better. So somewhat ironically, the SE would now be the niche “bonus” release in this ideal world of mine, with the OUT being standardized as it should be. Since in this ideal world all of this would be from new 4K transfers anyway, the old Lucas approved Blu-rays should die out of print and that cut should only be available in the deluxe box. And every digital download site, streaming service, theatrical screening, cable airing, etc. would show the OUT.

Why would they make two when they could just make one?

Author

…The same reason Blade Runner wasn’t only released as a deluxe box? For the exact reasons that I explained, that some people who would have no interest in buying a deluxe box would buy the OUT? And Disney likes money so they don’t want to limit their target demographics?

If you mean why they wouldn’t release the SE as a standalone, because the market for that is very small (most anyone who wants to see the various SEs would also want the OUT, and if you’re a diehard Lucas fanboy you already have the 2011 release, and if you’re a casual fan you don’t care either way) and to avoid consumer confusion. Make one cut the standard, canonical cut (that would be the OUT), and the others curiosities. You don’t want to saturate the market with five different Star Wars cuts. That would just confuse people. They wouldn’t know what to buy. Make it so that if Grandma wants to buy Star Wars as a Christmas present for her grandson, she doesn’t have to bother the Geek Squad at Best Buy or call her son for help. Make it nice and easy for her so that the next generation ends up with the OUT.
