Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread — Page 8

It’s a good question for every single SW movie (and other) I guess:

  • TPM: more than a week (3 days on Tatooine, a few days on Coruscant, and last scene a few days after Naboo is taken back);

  • AOTC: more that a week, less than two (2 days on Coruscant; 3 days to travel to Naboo and to leave to Tatooine; 2 days on Tatooine and to go to Geonosis; 1 day on Geonosis; and finally the ending shot that can occur a few days after the battle of Geonosis);

  • TCW: first series: 3 years; second series: 2 years;

  • ROTS: tricky one. Padmé is already pregnant, Anakin has not showed up in a few months, and the babies are delivered at the end (with the ending montage which is Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey stuff). I would say a few weeks, maybe a complete month or more;

  • Rebels: 5 years

  • ANH: around a week, yeah;

  • TSWHS: 1 day: Life Day !

  • ESB: again, tricky one. So much is going on in this one, I would say more than a week, two weeks top (2 days on Hoth… and then it’s almost impossible to guess);

  • ROTJ: 3 days on Tatooine, 1 day on Dagobah, 1 day with the fleet, 2 days on Endor. A complete week ?

  • TFA: Poe captured on the first night; BB8 travels to Rey the next day and then spends the night with her (lucky bastard some might say); they take off from Jaku the next day and meet Han; it may take a day to meet Maz; First Order comes, Rey is captured, Rey escapes, they get back to the Reistance base… well, another full day ? Rey goes to the ancient Jedi Temple the next day I guess. 5 days ?

I’ve thought about this before. ROTS is the most interesting because hypothetically it could have taken place over a month but if you follow time in the film literally it’s only 3 or 4 days.

I’d say yes, but I’d heard somewhere that Rogue One ends like ten or fifteen minutes before ANH begins.

Vader was actually a stowaway so this doesn’t rule it out.

ESB takes at least a few weeks. It probably takes Han and Chewie 2-3 days on the Asteroid to do repairs than another 2 weeks to travel to Bespin. Then 2 or so days waiting while Lando repairs the Falcon.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Return of the Jedi

  • No more than 1 or 2 days on Tatooine
  • A few hours en route to Dagobah and Rebel meeting point
  • A few hours to Endor
  • About 2 days on Endor
  • A few hours for Battle of Endor and celebration

So just about a week.

SW spans a week, give-or-take a couple days.

TESB spans several months, almost a year.

ROTJ spans a week.

Those are the timeframes I’m running with, anyway.

I’d say a few weeks at most.

Could you both give more details about how you see the time passing? What makes one of you feel like it’s months and the other just weeks? This is really interesting.

The problem with the OT being any longer than a couple of weeks is that everyone wears the same set of clothes for most of the film.

Worst Rogue One spoilers ever all up in here.

I think I remember reading in some novel or other that it took Luke and Obi-Wan several days to get to Mos Eisley. That’s something I’d never really thought about, but I guess it makes sense.

In my head canon, the Millennium Falcon's trip from Hoth to Bespin took several months travelling at sublight speeds. Time dilation kept the crew from experiencing that amount of time, so that’s why they didn’t arrive starved/dehydrated/really grungy. Luke spent that same amount of time on Dagobah training with Yoda, explaining his advanced Force/lightsaber duelling capabilities and his “I learned so much since then” bit of dialogue.

I didn’t get the feeling that the movie took place over months. While Empire is not a rushed movie, everything to me suggests that everything in the movie happens on a short time scale. Not having the hyperdrive is like not being able to drive on the interstate: it’s doable, but just a little bit slower (minutes/hours in the interstate example, days/weeks for hyperspace). We didn’t seem much of Luke’s training, but it seemed very intense and rushed to me. So, there’s my reasoning for a couple of weeks.

How long do you think it will take? I say two weeks. Let’s spend several pages discussing.

The two things that take a while are the trip to Bespin and Luke’s training. The longer the flight takes the longer Luke gets to train. At minimum the trip to Bespin will take weeks. It more likely takes months or years depending on the distance between systems. If we are generous with the Falcon’s speed and the distance between systems, I would say 1-2 months. The story allows for that. The Falcon likely has bathing facilities and could easily carry spare clothing. Han and Chewy live on it after all. That gives Yoda a fair amount of time to cram in a decade of training. Luke obviously retained most of it because when he comes back Yoda says he has learned enough. That would be impossible in a week and super tough in a month.

That just seems way too long to me.
