Hey guys! I’m just wondering if there’s any kind of reference to how Jabba’s subs looked in ROTJ 97 SE? I think I saw one pic here long ago but not sure where.

Come on Guys does anyone have an answer to this? we are about done with ESB 97 SE but we need to know this to finish Jedi 97 SE.

Thanks

I looked around for some images but couldn’t find any. I know a few people now have prints and scans of ANH-97 but I can’t say with certainty that there are any RoTJ97 scans in the community at this point. The few times I’ve asked, people have said it hasn’t been done yet (though prints have popped up for sale a few times).

Any idea what the context could have been when it was discussed?

I am not sure, I thought there was a thread here on all the alien subs, maybe msycamore started it, but again not sure.

Here’s the thread. He asked for some 97SE Jedi sources quite a few times, but I don’t think he ever got them. Maybe Catbus will be aware of any Jedi SE frame scan that has been posted here. If we have anything, it’s probably from an ebay auction.

If you don’t end up finding something, going with what you did for ANH might be a safe bet, as they came out 5 weeks apart from one another.

Thanks that was the thread, well we need to figure something out now because ESB is done and we are on to Jedi.

Must be frustrating, but that’s still good news!

So I just downloaded the Team Blu SW from usenet, anyone know what the hell the password is? Can’t seem to find it in the thread anywhere.

Are there any shots in the 97 SE documentaries from ROTJ that might display the subs? I know this was true for Jabba’s scene in ANH.

I think for lack of accurate reference, an educated guess might be best for the ROTJ subs.

Completely serious question here… Is precisely replicating the look, timing and placement of the alien subs really that important? Maybe it’s just because I live in Norway and rarely get the English subs hardcoded into my movies anyway, but I feel like the only case where subtitle formatting is a serious issue, is where the subtitles in question are animated or otherwise elaborately designed, which… really isn’t the case for the alien subs in Star Wars. I mean I get that you want to be faithful to how it was seen in theaters in 97, but is it really worth holding the entire release back, just because you’re worried that the subs might not be frame-accurate or placed exactly right on the screen?

Well that aside, nice to see the 97 cut get some love around here too. For all the things that were wrong with this version, I do think that the 97 release of Return of the Jedi had the best version of the ending celebration, with both my preferred soundtrack and the… not as weird Anakin-ghost. (I still have an issue with the original having hair and being only barely recognisable as the man we saw under the mask, but Hayden Christensen just made no sense at all.)

Nitpicking over tiny details is kind of what we do here. 😃

It’s meant to be the main/best presentation of the version of the films, at least until someone attempt s a 35mm presentation. So, might as well try to do it right.

They didn’t say they were holding anything back. They said it was time to work on it so they asked if anyone had references.

I believe all shots in the documentaries are pan and scan shots, and therefore useless.

Would the subs on a widescreen VHS/laserdisc not be the same? I’m assuming that’s the case but how come they aren’t?

Wasn’t useless for ANH since those came out looking quite good. I don’t have these documentaries on my harddrives so if there are any of Jabba’s subs in ROTJ I’d love to see some screens. Obviously we won’t be able to match the timing and exact placement without a full reference but getting the look of the font right would be good enough for now in my opinion.

I took a look at the documentary. Despite having some scenes in Jabba’s lair and the sail barge, there don’t seem to be any subs.

Did anyone happen to catch any of the 97SE theatrical showings that happened in the last year? Again, I’m betting on the subs matching ANH just because they were produced simultaneously. But who knows.

I don’t think that would fit on the screen.
