Calling a film “poorly edited” just because it is long is pretty fucking ridiculous. Huge misunderstanding of what constitutes editing (not to mention pacing).

90% of long movies are long because of useless scenes and crappy pacing.

Granted. With that said, I think Interstellar could have (and should have) easily been two hours instead of three.

I don’t know that they’re poorly edited; I just can’t sit through a movie longer than 130 minutes.

I almost never see movies 2 and a half hours and longer. It’s the main reason why I skipped Civil War.

You’re missing out, man. It didn’t feel like a 2 hour and 26 minute movie.

The thing about Civil War is I didn’t realize how long it was. I was enjoying myself the whole time. I never had that moment where you drop out of the movie and have a small existential crisis as you realize you’ve been watching this thing for hours.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Not what I said. I said a lot of long movies today are, whereas in the past we’ve had a lot of beautiful long movies.

Also, I just bought a ticket for a screening of Lawrence of Arabia at one of my favorite independent theaters tomorrow night. Can’t wait. I saw it on the big screen a few years back when the 50th anniversary restoration came out, but that’s a movie that I’ll go see as often as theaters want to show it.

Coolidge Corner? Damn, I haven’t checked their schedule in awhile and already made plans for tonight. Maybe next time (I did already see it a couple years back at the Brattle though). Lawrence of Arabia is one of my all time favorites.

Yep, love the Coolidge. I used to live close enough to walk, I saw Breathless and Metropolis there that year.

Go take a bath, Millennial.

Millennials don’t have time to take baths because they’re too busy watching movies.

Nice. Coolidge might be my number one favorite theater actually. I’ve been living close enough to walk but not really a convenient distance (about a half hour). I’ve sort of wanted to be closer but I fear it’d ruin my bank account.

As is, I don’t go to nearly as many old movies there as I’d like. Though I did catch Jaws and Back to the Future there last year so I guess I can’t complain.

Typical Millennial, claiming he’s busy with baths when he’s actually just wasting time posting here.

You don’t see me doing that.

Civil War was pretty good about keeping interest all the way through. The other two equally long super-movies struggled under the runtime, though. X-Men felt a bit bloated and BvS was screaming CAN YOU FEEL THE RUNTIME AS IT TAKES YOUR DREAMS AWAY?

Interstellar (2014)

This movie had no business being almost three hours long. Did the editor take a long nap and the movie was released without his or her knowledge? Beyond that, it reminded me a little of Sunshine in that both were very interesting movies that utterly failed in the last act. There was some really good stuff in it, which only made it all the more disappointing.

7/10

Interesting review. I was alright with the ending because of its ambition and the fact that it presented the idea of time not being an arrow but being just all at once. Neil De’Grasse Tyson has some cool points about the science of the ending. So after all that, I feel I can appreciate it a bit more.

I thought the score was beatiful, the acting terrific and the chemistry very strong between Murph and her father. The scene of Brand wanting to go to a planet because of love did not work for me. But visually, Interstellar is a masterpiece.

IMHO Interstellar works on enough levels that it’s immense ambition can be felt viscerally and despite a few problems I feel perfectly fine giving it a strong 9/10.

Seeing it projected in 70MM IMAX was absolutely stunning. I feel bad for everyone that missed out on that experience.

If I’ve learned anything from MST3K, it’s that even a bad 75 minute film can seem like it’s three hours long. A good movie flies by no matter the length.

I thought felt the same way about it that I felt about 2001. Great movie, would be a masterpiece if 20 minutes shorter. I loved the score. There weren’t any parts I didn’t like but I would still cut 20 minutes or so to make it move a bit faster.

The Conjuring 2- Wan continues to have little flair for dialogue (“This is as close to hell as I ever want to be!”) or characterization, but he sure has a way with jump scares, stunning digital cinematography, and sound design. Too long, derivative, and sometimes cheesy, but moody, kinetic, and exciting.
