The second card looks like it comes from a Doris Day movie. 😉

The colour alignment will make all scratches and dirt become ‘tri-colour’ as they are not ‘misaligned’ to begin with, so it does make quite a difference for a grindhouse style viewing.

It is helpful in deciding what is print dirt/damage and what is baked into the negative though, I’ve been thinking about whether this could be useful algorithmically for restoration.

I wondered if that would be the case. I would say don’t do colour alignment then (would it be possible to see a picture of both scenarios?)

well i don’t know who that is (am i too young?), but that second card reminds me of “lets all go to the lobby and get ourselves some snacks” style clips my local drive-in shows before shows and during intermission. It has the same coloring and font. Seems out of place in this movie though.

A true grindhouse would have the colour misalignment, as that is what is on the print 😃

What resolution, filesize would people want a grindhouse to be, and would you prefer the intermission cards left in or removed? Colour aligned or not? (It won’t realign perfectly unfortunately, but can be improved a lot), missing frames left as is?

Cast your votes here.

And yes, more funds for more HDDs would be great, as I am currently working without a net, and it has already cost me time when the RAID0 working space decided to ‘unraid’ a few days ago, costing me a couple of days tedious work to have to redo.

I would certainly want the intermission cards left in. 😃

i would vote for the grindhouse to have:
1080p at around 20 gb, so that we can see all those scratches nice and crisp
no strong feelings about title cards
realign color unless it messes with scratches somehow?
leave missing frames missing

I agree, although I’d say even aim for a size of 30-40 GB, with both the Italian audio and synced 16mm audio (if possible). We can always produce versions further compressed to 20GB or 10GB @ 720p etc for people who want smaller file sizes.

Yeah, I don’t think I’d want to bother with something too large when it’s not the final product. 😄

I really don’t care what all it is as long as a 10-20GB down-convert is shared.

When I commented, I didn’t realize the intermission cards weren’t original to the film (I’ve never seen it in full and am waiting for this). I wouldn’t mind them being gone.

In terms of quality though, a higher bitrate is required to deliver the same quality that you would get from a cleaner de-grained video (like stuff shot directly to digital). If you were to use CRF for x264 in the range of 16-18 for the video I’d predict it would come out at a size greater than 30GB. Do keep in mind that even 40GB is heavily compressed.

This is just an early grindhouse we’re talking about, though. If it was the final product, sure, 30-40GB is great! But this is the first release without a whole lot of work finished, so IMO it isn’t really worth all that internet usage to download a massive file that will inevitably be replaced and be made largely obsolete within a year.

The intermission cards are great but, as others have said, don’t really belong in the film. Perhaps they could be released as extras at some point.

Yeah but as I mentioned, you need those extra bits for all the dirt and scratches. The final product would be more compressible due to less random 1-frame noise appearing. Anyway that’s just my suggestion. 😄

Yeah, it doesn’t really matter to me. Mavimao’s LD cut will probably suffice for me (once my crappy internet can get it downloaded 😦) and I might not even grab the first grindhouse. 😄

I never even thought of THX-1138. Glad that’s not being forgotten.

I’ll hold out for the cleaned-up version but this IS cool. Of course, in Harmy’s hands… well, watch one of his Despecialized Star Wars cuts. 😃

Is it the one that someone around here had previously? The old THX thread was shared with AG discussion early on.

It was bought ages ago, I need to replace the CCD in my scanner, so it has been sitting there awaiting funds unfortunately.

I am also in serious need of more 4TB HDDs and another 1TB SSD too if anyone has any spare. At the moment everything keeps grinding to a halt when I have to unload 4TB of data and wait 8 hours at a time before continuing work.
