Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP) — Page 18

I’m close with my version of the 1981 crawl as well. Mine looks a bit different. The flyover isn’t final and a few other things might need some tweaking, but in general this is pretty close to what I wanted. The title is from TESB, but with an earlier fadeout. The crawl is from the BR, the flyover is from the TN1 bonus 1981 crawl, as are the brightest stars. The others were hand drawn using the 1993 DE LD and the 1982 PAL LD for placement as well as TESB (for the far left stars only). The moons and planet are a mix of the SSE and the BR and resized and re positioned to match the 1993 DE LD. That version has really been my template for most of this, though I did change some things from that one once I realized that the TN1 Bonus 1981 crawl was more accurate.

Slight change in pace for the conversation. Anybody have any experience buying from this seller for bluray cases or have another seller they’d reccomend?

I would love to eventually put this set in black cases as it looks really nice and would complement what they seem to be doing with the ST packaging. But so far this is the only place I’ve found that offers black, four disc cases. I’m just a little concerned because their site makes them seem a bit… how to put this… unprofessional. I’d rather not get screwed over for trying to get a slightly cooler look.

Of course the final covers will fit any 14mm spine (That seems to pretty much be the standard for 4 disc cases), but I still like the black look.

Sorry for lack of updates. It’s largely technical stuff at this point so no sense in boring you all with that.

I’m not sure? Did you download the actual file or are you just looking at the compressed preview on drive?

It looks pretty sharp on the file on my computer. I did have to do some funky things to get the new Leia to blend in so it looks (mostly) like it belongs with the surrounding art, because that was just a photograph which I took from the 04 DVD cover. I did this because the image of Leia on the actual Struzan art is clearly not the Leia from SW and is (I think) the Leia from Empire. So it might look slightly soft in that area, but overall it looks pretty sharp to my eyes. You may notice I also added the Death Star into the bottom right corner, but that blended even better than Leia I think. I did the main design of this some time ago, this final version is just updating the proportions to make it fit a 14mm spine bluray case, but I remember using the highest res version of this art that I could find.

I’m hugely impressed with all your work here. Really well done! I don’t think the new Leia on that cover fits very well though. She’s looking off in an odd direction and the style isn’t meshing with the rest of the characters Struzan drew(!)

But honestly, like others have said, it looks so good it could be an official release.

The poster art really is very low res and blurry on strutzan version.

I agree, based on the full size image. There’s some major pixelation on the faces, for example. Did you get the posters from one of the high res packs people have put together in the DVD Cover section of the forum? It looks like it was taken from a google images preview/cache (instead of a full res image) or something along those lines.

I don’t think you should embellish Struzan’s art, even if it’s not accurate to the film. Stick with the original painting imo.

That is also an option.

Looks like you’re nearing the end. I’m legitimately excited for this! It looks awesome!!!

I am getting near the end. Lots of technical stuff at this point.

I’ll download one of the high res packs for the poster art as redo the struzan variant. If the general consensus is no new leia then I’ll keep the original leia, but I like the Death Star added on there. I think it blends well and fills in some dead space in that lower right corner.

Hey guys, sorry there hasn’t been any updates. Life has thrown a lot of unexpected crap my way and I haven’t had much free time. But I am currently rendering a new version of the 81 crawl with the starfield poita posted over in yotsuya’s 81 crawl thread. This will be the final version of the crawl presented on the blu ray. I can’t keep going back to it over and over again, otherwise the disc will never get finished, but I can’t really imagine anything else coming that could make the crawl that much better, so I’m pretty confident in sticking with this version.

I’ll keep you all posted as things develop. I really just want to get to a point where disc 1 is behind me, because the remaining discs should be much easier.

I’ve had an idea and I’d like some opinions on it.

I cannot accomplish seamless branching within encore, however, I’ve realized I can create the illusion of seamless branching by making the branching point right after r2, 3po, and Luke enter the homestead (I believe this is a reel change as well) where there are a few seconds of black before it fades back in to 3po in the oil bath. At that point, while there would be a slight blip in the branching, it wouldn’t be noticeable because the screen is black for a couple seconds anyways.

The benefit to doing this is that the film overall would have to be compressed less than it would with two full encodes of the movie on one disc, and thus the film visually would look better throughout. The downside is that I would likely have to use the AVCHD versions of the 5.1, 2.0, and 1.0 tracks, as I wouldn’t begin to know how to edit the native dts tracks to fit the cut down runtime of the tracks, so there would be a very slight drop in audio quality.

So my question is, would you all rather me have lower video quality by having two separate tracks for each version of the movie with higher quality audio, or higher quality video by branching at that point, but sacrificing a little bit of audio quality? Personally, I prefer video quality to audio quality, and don’t really hear a difference between the avchd tracks and the mkv tracks, but I admittedly don’t have much of an ear for audio quality.

Or hey, if anyone knows how I can make the dts audio fit the cut down tracks, all the better, but I’m oblivious to how I could do it.

MKVToolNix can help you with cutting down the DTS tracks. Drop in an MKV file with just the audio you want to cut mixed in, split the file based on frames you want to cut in the “Output” tab, then drop the first portion of the film you chopped up in a new window and append the second portion of the film that you to that file and voilà. No encoding required.

Oh wow thank you. That actually seems remarkably easy.

Completely off topic on the 81 crawl spectrum (that sounds like it is coming along fantastically), I was wondering what you were thinking about for the prequels. Now I know I already touched on the subject, but I recently came across kk650’s regrained prequels. They are a huge step up in quality from the original prequel blurays, and was wondering your thoughts on using them in place of the saga editions?

Author

Well the “saga editions” are just placeholders for the 2011 versions. I don’t think I’ll be using kk650’s versions anywhere simply because this set is supposed to be a compilation of the various official versions (at least where there are major, noticeable differences between them) with all of their inherent flaws. Fan edits and unofficial versions won’t be included except in a few cases of supplemental material (Star Wars begins & the extended versions)

I actually have a rough version of the bluray cover for TPM almost done, so maybe I’ll post that in a bit while I’m working on other stuff.

Just dropping in to let everyone know I’m still alive. Some incredibly sudden, stressful, and time consuming stuff has entered my life and necessitated my lack of posting. I’m still working on this as well as other projects whenever I can (which isn’t often), but until all of this blows over, my presence on the forum will probably be scarce.

Sorry to read it. Hope it blows over fast, and that you can continue working on your Star Wars projects.
