HOORAY!
Final scans have arrived and I am working on them now. Unfortunately for the past 48 hours I and most of the rest of the family have been laid up with a particularly violent vomit bug. The kind where you think you are going to die, and then start wishing you would.
The print is very beatup in places, I have been working on some algorithms to help automate the process. I’ll pop out a low rez grindhouse, and a first cleaning pass version soon, so you can all follow along with the process.
Basically I analyse the film, work out some semi-automated routines, run those passes and then look for what didn’t work, and then start finessing it from there.
I’d be appreciative if people could join in and help ID the sections where my routines fail so I can modify them and then finally go through and do a manual pass to clean up any remaining problem areas.
It is particularly tricky due to the CRT flickering screens and fine details in some scenes, but overall it is great to watch a ‘film version’ even if it is in a language I don’t speak. It is a mostly visual film anyway 😃

Yikes! Hope you and your family feel better soon, Poita.
And please check your PM’s. It’s kind of important.
Where were you in '77?

I’d love to help. I speak a bit of Italian, so watching it would actually be good practice for me. What sort of stuff would I be looking for?

Funny good news/bad news post. Not funny bugs. Even Indy says: “I hate vomit bugs, Jacques! I hate’em!” So, let’s do our part for poita!

Okay, you twisted my arm! I’ll do it. I’ll do it!

Thanks for the update! I was wondering where this was at 😄.

That sounds awful, and extremely unpleasant. You’ll have my prayers, and I hope it goes away as soon as possible.

I’m not sure how much help I can be on the glitch spotting side, but if the previews are small enough files for a quick short download, I’ll try to help out what all I can.
Keep us posted; I’m sure we all share the same ecstatic excitement for the finished release!

Poita, I hope that you and family can get well soon, my friend.
EWE, sounds like Salmonella Poita. I remember when I first got married, my wife’s chicken cooking skills weren’t quite up to par yet and that night is one I will always recall as “the dark night of the soul.” It also taught me that if your chicken tastes like Turkey… stop eating it.
You’re in my prayers today as well!
I was really confused about something but I think your post sort of cleared that up… I had assumed you were the one scanning the film because you have a film scanner but that’s not the case here and in fact your function here is more to assemble, stabilize, and clean the scan?
I’m all for reviewing film and looking for glitches, that sounds like fun… I have a good internet connection too so size shouldn’t be a problem.
My internet is horribly slow, but a heavily compressed (about 1GB) version of the raw scan is uploading now, I wanted to have something up for May the 4th 😃
Whatever the infection is, it is brutal, I am finally coming out the other side, but now our poor Japanese exchange student staying with us has just come down with it 😦

I can take a look at it as well. I’m fairly familiar with the film (not that it really matters, probably). Do you still intend to clean the shots that were later altered, first?
Yes, I am on a time limitation with my software licenses, and I can’t currently afford to renew them as I am in a, well, let’s call it a work slump.
When they expire I can no longer do much restoration work, so I need to prioritise in case things take longer than planned. That means I will be working on altered scenes first and then the rest of the film, and then if I still have time, back onto the OT.
So yes, if anyone could give me a timecode list from the render so I can start collating a scene priority list, that would be great.

BTW, the file has been graded to match the colour on the print, it looks as close to how that particular print is as you are likely to get.
The file is in the BT.709 colour space and is designed to be watched on a calibrated television, not a computer screen, so keep that in mind.
The colour may not be to everyone’s taste, but that is how it is on this particular print.

That’s something I can definitely do. I’ve already gone through the film before, to replace the BD shots with Laserdisc upscales based on your 16mm scan.
I know about your time crunch as well. Is the priority going to be:
THX ‘prespecialized’ -> OT ‘prespecialized’ -> THX -> OT?
or
THX ‘prespecialized’ -> THX -> OT ‘prespecialized’ -> OT?
Either way, anything you can come up with in your time frame is essentially priceless to us all.
“THX ‘prespecialized’ -> THX -> OT ‘prespecialized’ -> OT?”
I’m on a promise.

Deleted. This comment didn’t come across the way I intended. I misunderstood something poita had said.

Aren’t all the contributors listed in the first post still? I think he can just check there to see who all gave a little bit.

You’re under no obligation to send me one. I just want to see this preserved or used to despecialize the Blu Ray. I care more about the importance of the project than any sort of benefit I may get out of it.
I am pretty sure poita is sending a preview to those who offered to help spot glitches. I didn’t offer to do that because I know I don’t have the time right now, and I don’t know the film that well either.
If you are offering to help with visual QC then I would think someone would share the link with you.
I accidentally uploaded the file without audio, so had to re-upload it.
I actually don’t have a list of people who offered help, the link has been sent to thxita, he will pass it on once the upload is complete, it shouldn’t be too much longer now.
However, I had to use infinit as the file was larger than 2GB with the audio, and I needed something with resuming as my internet craps out all the time, so you will need to get infinit if you want to take a look at it.
It is free, https://infinit.io/?referral=poita and if you use my referral, we both get an extra half gig of storage which would be very useful going forwards for this project, and for the Original Trilogy restorations, as I need to transfer large files to people who are helping me find glitches in my work as it goes along.
You can of course not use my referral, or not use infinit, it is just what I will be using going forward, so would mean things will appear there more quickly than elsewhere.

Not all of them. But as others have said, this isn’t a reward posting, it’s for assistance. 😃
