Also, I’m looking for a new music piece for the death of QGJ (as in, the moment he is stabbed). The piece I currently have is a bit too harsh for my liking. And the original music piece doesn’t fit well with the cuts I’ve made, and nothing I’ve attempted to use has really impacted me in the way I’m wanting from the scene.

Look at what Smithers did for that. It’s really good and I’m planning on doing something similar in my edit

No offense, kid, but I don’t think you know how to boil water.

I used the first few seconds of “the stormtroopers” from ANH for the drum beat. Then I used the one where Anakin kills the tusken raiders, maybe try “anakin’s dark deeds” from ROTS for qui-gon’s death and continue to use it for the montage of the Gungans losing as well as Padme being arrested. Then have the exciting part of the music build when Obi-Wan gets angry and the force field shuts down

As usual, you are a huge help!

“Anakin’s Dark Deeds” was absolutely perfect for the tone I wanted. I had to modify it a bit to fit the pacing of the scene, but I’m super happy with how it turned out. I’ll probably upload a preview clip of it tonight or tomorrow.

what about the theme that plays when Kong is shot down and falls off the empire state building from the 2005 film it seems to have a fallen warrior sound to it

Great music piece. I’ll have to store that one in the bank for later.

So, I was going to keep this scene a bit under wraps until the release, but I really would like some insight. It’s the full-length podracing sequence. It’s been 100% rescored. The two-headed announcer is gone. Padme’s voice has been pitch-corrected to make her appear slightly younger. Lots of restructuring (too much to list right now).

But the biggest change comes in after the 7 minute mark. I won’t say what it is…just let me know what you think.

This is one of my favorite changes in this edit, and I just want to see what some of you think of it. The SFX needs some polishing (most of it has been recreated), but it’s nearly 100%

Try vimeo instead, they never block anything.

I love what you did with that. I really got the impression that Anakin was using the force when the audio drowned out. However, I didn’t like the way the engine sound cut out once Binary Sunset started, maybe some kind of audio fade would help. I feel like the first piano version of Imperial March isn’t needed, and for the second Imperial March, I don’t think it needs to continue once he gets to the crowd, just keep the beginning. But nonetheless, I had a huge smile on my face when he gets free of Sebulba and Imperial March plays, I love it.

I think your color-correction also makes the CG aliens look more real, might just be me though.

After watching it a few more times, the way the second version of the Imperial March plays out is good as it is. I’m still not a fan of the piano though.

Author

I actually liked the piano but disliked the normal “dark” version afterwards. The piano version is kind of peaceful and plays nicely with binary sunset as like him tapping into the force, but I think him winning the race is a celebratory moment, not a dark moment.

Yea, I’m still touching up on the sfx. As for the music piece at the end, this is my thought process:

As the final bit of the race gets drowned out by the binary sunset bits, I wanted to imply Anakin using the force, as Jeebus pointed out. Hopefully that bit translates well. Second, when Anakin and Sebulba are neck and neck, their pods connect. Then the soft piano Imperial March plays. For everyone who knows the Imperial March and what it represents (presumably 99% of the people who would ever watch a fan edit), the soft version might just feel like a playful nod to Anakin’s future. But then I cut to Anakin’s mother and co watching the race. Qui-Gon closes his eyes. He feels something is about to happen. He feels a “vergence” in the force. Cut back to Sebulba struggling to break free of Ani. Cut to Anakin’s mother wincing away from the race. Then, Qui-Gon looks from the viewing tablet to the actual race. He looks concerned. Cut back to Sebulba trying again to pull away. It doesn’t look like Anakin is trying too hard to escape. Then, suddenly, Anakin pulls the lever and sends Sebulba crashing to his death, to the tune of the heavier, actual Imperial March. And then, the crowd cheers. Something about the visual of the crowd cheering a young Darth Vader to the tune of the Imperial March really resonates with me.

The podrace victory may have initially been a celebratory moment. But in my edit, it’s a dark moment. The first true indication of what Anakin will eventually become. What you didn’t see was, in the moments leading up to the race, Sebulba and Anakin have a brutal exchange, where Sebulba tells Anakin that, once he dies in the race, his mother will be sold for Bantha fodder. Throughout the second half of this film, there is a heavy emphasis on Anakin’s feelings for his mother (pointed out even by the Jedi Council), and how those feelings influence him. Killing Sebulba in the podrace is a precursor to Anakin flat-out murdering the sand people in Episode II. If you’ll notice, the end of the podrace does not include the celebratory chanting with QGJ holding Anakin up above the crowd. Qui-Gon is not celebrating. Instead of congratulating Anakin, Qui-Gon goes immediately to Watto to cash in on the bet. After feeling this “vergence” in the force isolated around Anakin, Qui-Gon’s one mission is to train him, because he recognizes the dangers of not training him (which I have as a contrast to everyone else seeing the danger in the training itself).

Anyway, that’s why I have everything the way I do. If I omit anything at all, it would possibly be the softer piano Imperial March, but I’m not sure yet. I may just make it more subtle.

Okay, cool. After reading your explanation, I like it a lot more. I think that it could probably use a little quieting down, and maybe fading the end, though.

Author

I could probably cut another minute and a half out of it. I just didn’t want to make it too short. I’ve seen edits where they’ve made the race simply one lap, but I was never a fan of that. In my opinion, it should be three full laps, which gives Anakin enough time to believably catch Sebulba at the end. And when you keep the three lap structure, you have to include most of the crashes, for continuity sake, otherwise random podracers will just disappear out of nowhere. And I don’t want to cut the Tusken Raiders bits, because that’s one of the few humorous moments in the film that I believe works really, really well.

I can understand why you’d feel like the race starts dragging. It’s just tough finding spots I’m willing to cut. Maybe some of the intro scene. But again, I really like the intro for tension-building. I’ll see what I can do.

Honestly, the hardest part of this edit is getting Jar-Jar’s voice the way I want it.

I’ve experimented with a South African accent, an Australian accent, British accent, American accent. I just…don’t know. What would you guys hope to hear from him?

Author

Alternative to giving him an actual voice, I think it would be interesting to just give him an alien voice or just garbles of sounds, unsubtitled, and have characters reactions clue us in to what he’s saying, like chewbacca.

I really liked the powerful tone used in the trailer

I liked it too, but I can’t match the voice up to his lips in several scenes, which made me want to interlace his English (basic) speaking with alien garble. The voice in the trailer will be used for a few key scenes, but probably 70% of his dialogue will be alien (my current plan). It’s the alien voice I can’t get right.

hey whatever it turns out sounding like, im sure it will sound fine will you put the edit on vimeo for people with horrible internet connection like me lol ? Im really looing forward to this

Yea, I’ll put it on vimeo. Of course, it’ll be a very compressed version, as I believe I’m only allowed a 5gb upload with my current account. It’ll be the full movie, but slightly lower resolution.

For everyone else, I’ll be putting it up on Myspleen.

I second this. An accented JJB would just be cringey imo.

Love the podrace scene btw, perfect length and actual tension at the end. Never thought I’d write that about the Phantom Menace…

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Anyone know what I can do for this?..

So, instead of Anakin building 3PO, my initial thought was to have Anakin win 3PO in a bet off of a Hutt. Obviously, I can’t show this. But in the scene where Anakin is removing the covering on 3PO to show him to Padme, I’ve eliminated a portion of his audio (when his back is turned to the camera), and my plan was to audio-splice some of his other dialogue to get him to say something along the lines of “I won him in a bet off of a Hutt” just after he delivers his line “isn’t he great?”

After trying to find pieces of his dialogue to do this, the best I can sort-of come up with is “I won 3PO betting on the podraces”, but I’m not exactly happy with how it sounds. Because of the different deliveries of the lines I’m pulling from, it’s very obvious that it’s a mashup of his other lines, and it doesn’t sound very natural.

Does anyone know of any better dialogue to use? Even something from another movie he may have been in, or interviews or something? It would help me out tremendously.

Hell, if any of you have kids or know someone who can pull off a convincing Jake Lloyd impression, I’d be open to using it.

Do you mind posting what it sounds like with the dialogue spliced together?

Ehhhh…I would, but…trust me, it’s bad.

It’s essentially “I wonTHREEPIO! fromaHUTT betting on the podraces”

I’ll splice together some dialogue for you

It’s mostly an issue trying to figure out which dialogue I want to splice. I’d be happy to hear suggestions, though. Or if you want to mock something up, I’d love to hear it.
