Oh yeah, I definitely see that! I’m surprised, you’d think they’d have more control of this sort of thing! Although admittedly the BD picture is a little clearer.

Some people will never see eye to eye on DNR and EE. Some see it as an acceptable improvement, which makes an older movie look new again. Others view it as unnecessary revisionism, that robs movies of their original look and texture.

FrankT, if you really compare the two, I think youll see that the image in not “clearer”. It’s more something, but “clearer” is not the adjective I would use. It would be one thing if a layer of crud was removed, revealing details that had been masked… but that’s not what happened here. They simply sharpened/softened the image. Think of it like this: someone took a drawing that was originally done using pencil, and traced over it using a sharpie. The sharpie is easier to see, but the original texture is now gone.

I take a middle-of-the-road approach and use light processing, but nowhere near the levels I’ve seen out of the studios (and cel anime, for example, tends to really get the short end of the stick sometimes when companies decide to upscale from 480p rather than going back to source and do a new scan of the film material, and think that a bit of warpsharp and a ton of DEEN can substitute…)

I like this, excellent description for non-technical people.

I see what you mean exactly.

I’ve just discovered that there are HD LaserDisc versions of the Back to the Future trilogy! They call it MUSE or Hi-Vision. They’re very rare, but if we can obtain them we could have a superb preservation on our hands!

Why is the DCP copy not considered a fantastic copy? It’s certainly better than the Blu-Ray and is pretty much perfect. It’s already available on the spleen.

“Hi-Vision” is just what HD is called in Japan. (both MUSE-style and the current digital type)

I believe some people find it to be ruined because of the color of the skateboard wheels in one shot.

We are indeed a fickle bunch.

It’s like that on the print… honest.

Nothing a little colour correction can’t fix.

All right, you lunatics. I’m going to fix it, or try anyway. Don’t say I never did anything for you.

I still say we should try to track down the HD/MUSE LaserDiscs.

The MUSE Hi-Vision LD’s require a special player and decoder - neither are hardly cheap and the discs cost a fortune. I’m curious as to what the MUSE discs would offer over the Blu-ray or DCP.

We should get a research division on it.

MUSE laserdisc quality is not on par with BD; could (should) be better than an anamorphic DVD, but with some analog “flaws”… I’d love to have it preserved, but result could be not comparable with BD (and DCP, or course)… hence, I think it’s better to leave this idea behind, unless someone could provide me a MUSE decoder, the MUSE laserdisc, and an appropriate capture card - I’ll put the MUSE laserdisc player! (^^,)

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

So what colour were the skateboard wheels in the actual print?

The correct color is yellow. They’re even yellow in most of the shots in the DCP. There’s simply a color error for two super quick shots. Here’s a comparison:

Huh. Even if they were pink, I’d accept it.

Some sort of dirt removal or color correction algorithm gone horribly wrong? Same thing happened with The Shining, where the green ball also turned pink…
