Mad Max (Avalanche Studios, 2015)

What a fantastic game! Avalanche Studios should be applauded for this, their Magnum Opus. Terrific mix of vehicle and onfoot gameplay. The melee combat leaves a little to be desired but the rest more than makes up for it. The main mission storyline is great. They perfectly captured the brutal and visceral world that Max inhabits. I really hope they’ll make a follow up one day. Definitely recommended.

I am trying to like Mad Max but struggling with it so far. There is so much HUD/objective/status crap on the screen all the time that it is ruining the experience. I found a toggle HUD mod… that no longer works. I’m sure I need to give this more of a chance, but the hand-holding seems ridiculous. Does the car get better handling as you upgrade?

I also played Firewatch based on your recommendation. A bittersweet experience once I found out there aren’t multiple endings. It has some of the best voice acting I have ever heard, yet could have been so much more. Did you replay it for a different conversation?

It’s pretty objective heavy in the beginning to familiarize the player with all of the various mechanics. Once you’ve cleared out your first area it opens up a bit more and you’re free to roam and tackle whatever you want outside of the story missions. I believe there’s a video capture mode you can use to disable the HUD. Oh and yeah the handling and everything else about your vehicle do improve with the various upgrades. Tires play a big part in that.

As for Firewatch, yeah it’s sadly become a modern trend of the genre. Multiple endings used to be standard but they’ve become the exception. I think it’s still an engaging experience and I expect this studio’s next game will expand and improve on a lot of the aspects that this one fell short on.

I haven’t played through it again myself but I have watched someone else’s playthrough. It’s interesting seeing what other people bring to and get out of the game.

Shadows of the Empire works near-perfectly in Project 64. The problem is that the default settings are wrong. You have to make sure the Counter Factor is set to 2, not 1, and the VI Refresh Rate is at 1500, not 2200.

Just these two settings alone will fix a great many games that were broken in the more recent revisions. There are only a few that actually need them the other way. You also need to make sure you’re using Glide64 for your video plugin, because the default plugin is riddled with graphics glitches. Turn on ‘hardware frame buffer emulation’ and ‘software depth buffer rendering’ to enable many effects in various games that would otherwise be shown incorrectly or not at all.

Having said that, I’ve become increasingly dissatisfied with the state of Nintendo 64 emulation, since it still has many errors and shortcomings that get in the way, and don’t look to be fixed any time soon. Because of that, I’ll be using it less in the future, and spending more time on the actual console. The biggest problem with this is the joysticks are so prone to wearing out, so I’ve been looking into ways to repair or replace them. I got one of the ‘Gamecube-style’ sticks, which are very well made and won’t wear out, but since the sensitivity on those is completely screwed up and it’s really hard to aim properly in GoldenEye with it, I ordered a custom circuit board from a guy in Germany which is designed to fix the sensitivity and make it respond much more like a new original. I’ll have to learn to solder in order to install it, but it’s very much worth the effort.

On the subject of Zelda—if you’re going to play Ocarina of Time, for god’s sake, make sure you get a copy that is either version 1.0 or 1.1. Version 1.2 introduced the absolutely horrible revision to the music in the Fire Temple, which eliminated the awesome chanting and replaced it with some generic rubbish that just doesn’t fit. It’s really depressing that Call of Duty 4 and 5 are hacked and ruined on console, as they are the only two I ever enjoyed playing. Does anybody know if anyone still plays those two games on Steam? Just play the games, no hacks, no mods, just the pure unadulterated games?

If console versions are nothing but hackers, then don’t expect to find anything worth while on PC

PC has dedicated and private servers. So unlike console, there can be untarnished lobbies if people are still playing the game.

Does anyone here know (not speculate) if there is any population of people playing those games?

I smell a console peasant. 😉

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

I played CoD:MW2 last year sometime in the summer and there were some decent servers, but most were like you said hacked and what not.
BF4 is a better alternative if you’re looking for something like that. I always find good servers when I want to play that.

Thanks for the recommendation. I don’t play Call of Duty anymore because they ditched the war setting for whatever they’re trying to do now with the flying robots, but I still appreciate the earlier ones.

I mainly played with friends, but I’ve always preferred Battlefield for some reason. I haven’t played either in a while, tried TF2 a few nights ago and didn’t really enjoy it. The Division was awesome but lacked in content I felt, hopefully the seasons pass will add more and make it worth playing again… Although once DS3 comes out I’ll be exclusively playing that.

Robots… Sounds like Titan Fall, now that was fun for a while but got tedious quickly.

I agree with all of your post. The game I’m waiting for (and sincerely hope is getting made!) is another Red Dead installment. I love westerns and was a huge fan of Red Dead Redemption.

My brother loved those games, are you in the Steam group for this forum?

No I’m not. Sadly I don’t have a computer capable of playing modern video games anymore, so it’s only Duke Nukem and Doom for me when it comes to computer gaming, Haha! When I get a new machine I’ll be sure to join up though!

Nah, PC Master Race. I just know that hacks are more available on PC so there is obviously more people using them.

Prime Examples: Pretty much every game pre-2005

Well in the meantime, don’t forget that GOG is there to serve all of your retro gaming needs.

Really, I’m looking through that site and I barely see anything I recognize, let alone ever played.

WTF? I had a friend banned from DS too.

I’m currently playing DS3. Soundtrack is f**king AMAZING. Graphics, gameplay, ALL THERE.
