OT Special Editions to have USA Roadshow Summer '16 — Page 3

I’m sure its due to the confusion of where the movies were going to be shown.

I just find it really offensive that they would use the Alamo as a place to screen films for other people’s entertainment. Over 200 Americans were killed there and I don’t appreciate the insensitivity!

Where were you in '77?

He is.

Although I’m confused why they’d screen these at the rental check-in counter at various airports…

With regards to the version, I assume they want to project using 35mm, and the only version Lucasfilm hands out on film is the 97. They never bothered to make a DCP of them (since they’re not the newest version), not did they bother to make film prints of the 2011, because very few studios still release this widely on film.

I wish I could attend one of the showings, but the nearest one is more than 600 miles away from me. Not really worth it, I’m afraid. I’ll just have to wait for another day to finally see them theatrically. I wasn’t born yet in 77 and too young to see them in 97, and I didn’t want a 7 film marathon just to see the 2011 versions. Oh well.

So this means we get to see the Mr Hankie Jabba again?

For those of you asking why it’s not going to be at Alamo theater locations, that’s what a roadshow is. When they use that word they are doing so specifically because it will be at a venue other than their theater. Here in Houston they have the “Rolling Roadshow” series where they drag out this big portable screen to various locations around the city (usually a parking lot of a restaurant or bar) and have outdoor screenings after dark where you bring your own lawn chairs or picnic blankets.

@the guy who mentioned Jaws and Close Encounters… You sure they were 35mm? My Alamo has shown both those films numerous times but they are ALWAYS the DCPs sourced from the most recent restorations. I just find it unlikely that any film front of either of those films would be “pristine”… I mean, when was the last print for either actually struck?

But you are right, the Alamo does make a point to show actual film when they can (I’ve been lucky to see a number of 35mm prints for other films there). I really do hope this OT roadshow will be 35mm, but somehow I doubt it. For one, as someone pointed out they’d have to have multiple prints based on the schedule. For two, they’d have to lug around a bunch of big, unwieldy, and (becoming) rare 35mm projectors to unusual locations when their normal roadshows are all digital from what I understand.

For what it’s worth, I actually spoke to the manager of the Alamo closest to me a few years ago when they were converting from film to digital. They had advertised that they would retain the ability to show 35mm. He told me they kept ONE projector that they would cart out for special occasions. Not sure about other locations.

Thanks for sharing your extra info about Alamo

For what its worth, the locations they had on their schedule (when there was one) seemed to be all arthouse type venues, so they probably all did still have film projectors.

Excuse my ignorance guys, but could it be they’re really going to screen the 97’SE, though converted to digital?

You edited your post and now mine makes no sense. 😕

Awesome! Didn’t mean to step on your toes, if I did. I just knew my Alamoes (is that proper plural?) have shown both those movies numerous times via DCP. But I’m not surprised at all that an Alamo showed them on film if they had access to prints. I’m rather jealous!

given how they just rescanned lucas’ “recut” negative, it was probably just the cheapo option, I highly doubt they’re projecting from film, who knows, maybe it’ll get leaked and we can make a 4k despecialized edition, lol.

Could be that new 4K scan that no one seems to know much about. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think scanning the 1997 cut would have to be the first step towards any sort of ultra high def SE since the 2004 and 2011 changes were done with the 2K Lowry master. Maybe Alamo’s showing the new master before Disney reinstates the post-'97 changes (if in fact they even plan to)?

huh. that would make sense. How else would they have really good prints and/or a digital scan that meets modern cinema standards? Good point.

EDIT: perhaps the removal from Alamo’s website has something to do with Alamo letting the cat out of the bag before Lucasfilm wanted them to? Could this have something to do with Peter Mayhew’s “announcement” that he’s been teasing on Twitter? That should be coming out in a few days if he keeps up his posting.

Eh, don’t worry. You guys have reason to suspect otherwise.

I just hope I’m right.

Guys, I saw this a couple weeks ago before I even made this thread, and for some reason one key fact of it completely slipped my mind: there’s a trilogy screening in September in upstate New York, and they specifically state they’re showing the films in 35 mm.

This is separate from the roadshow, but it does prove that Lucasfilm has film prints to distribute. Not sure why it didn’t occur to me to post this earlier, but there it is!
