If I read this thread again tonight I’ll need to head to the bar. 😉
Also, I meant 2.x 😃
If it’s 1.40:1 or 1.35:1 it will have bars on the sides.
Fixed.

The issue really isn’t whether or not the file was made for BD compatibility or not. Even if we didn’t care about that, it would still be rendered with the same aspect ratio (vlc would just add it like it does for 4:3 video). Even if there was more than just you requesting this, the logical thing to do is release the intact film. You can come along and do whatever you want to it. But if it was released the way you want, there would be no way for the thousands if people who want it intact to uncrop it. Does that make sense?
I think you are misunderstanding his original post. He never complained that the video wasn’t cropped for the preservation. He was stating that he wanted to crop it himself in VLC, but the letterbox didn’t allow him to easily accomplish that goal. He didn’t understand why the letterbox was needed, rather than making the video 1920x816, so that a straight crop can be done. So yes, it has everything to do with BD compatibility.

I think I once understood that being his point. Which is why I suggested that cropping all four sides is required.
But then i assumed otherwise because it’s difficult to understand that perspective. He figured out how to crop two sides but not the other two, though they’re all on the same settings screen? And then blamed other people?
Anyway, at least it seems to be worked out. Until the next round of OT madness begins.
Wow, these last few pages were a rollercoaster 😕
On a happier note, super keen to see 2.7 Towne! Always nice to see another step up in quality/accuracy is on its way 😃
It’s finished.
Is this true for the upload of the lossless version as well?
Laserschwert, how about a German version of 2.7? 😃
Hey laser. Nope, I won’t be able to start on that until next week at the earliest.
Hey Towne, it is too late (or out of place) to ask for the link of Mega?
Another person anxious to see 2.7 here 😃
Oh yeah, I would like a link to Mega, too. If it’s not too much trouble, that is. 😃

By asking for the Lossless Version, i think he’s definitely considering it 😉
Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

Would love to have a Mega link as well, if possible 😉
Oh, right, I was going to ask for the Mega link when you first said it was ready. I guess I forgot 😄.

Well, since everybody else is doing it too, could I have a mega link as well?
As a final note, after trying it - my opinion is that cropping to 1.85:1 is not ideal for Star Wars on TV… the screen becomes a bit too stuffed and image too near. I would say something like 2.21 or slightly less would be optimal preference for me… the image becomes slightly larger but doesn’t lose anything important from the sides really.
That’s how I prefer to do it, crop slightly but not too much, of course depending on a film.
Somehow this is seen as blasphemy here and deserves all kinds of vicious name calling and abuse.
Hard to believe that nobody here would never crop a film at all…for example one with 2.77:1 original aspect ratio… black bars become just too dominant and the image too narrow and small, at least on my TV. One option would be to move closer to TV but that of course is even worse - that is not how human vision works, is straining for the eyes and leads to actually less cinematic experience. So my final opinion on this is that cropping IS ok and people claiming otherwise are simply following the current norm, no doubt initiated by the auteur theory where a film maker’s vision is always seen as the correct one. If the sides were included in original film then that is how you must watch it, right? Ironically Lucas’ claim is that the special editions were actually his original vision so where does that lead the “widescreen purists” here…
So there.
K. Bye.
Thx!
So Towne, when ARE we getting the 16:9 Pan and Scan version 😉 😛
Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000
A Mega link? Count me in, sir! 😃
So Towne, when ARE we getting the 16:9 Pan and Scan version 😉 😛
and while you are at it, how about a 9:16 for those of us who watch on our mobile phones and suffer from vertical video syndrome? Seems logical that most people would prefer this.

Aren’t there any TVs that let you zoom in on the image? Like they used to do for widescreen?
Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Depends on the TV, and then even depends on the source used. My TV doesn’t allow the same zoom options for HDMI inputs as it does for coax/component input. It is annoying when i have a HDMI source that is presenting letter boxed movies in 4:3 aspect, and i can’t zoom in correctly to remove both the side and top letterboxing. Rare problem, but annoying all the same. TV manufacturers make lots of assumptions about how you will use your tv.

I’m not sure this topic needs to continue to shamble along in search of fresh brains, but yes. Actually most TV’s sold today zoom in on the image a little by default, trimming a few pixels from all sides, unless you find the option to tell it not to do that. Overscan is still with us in the digital HDTV world, it’s just a smaller amount. I don’t know about TV’s, but my Blu-ray player allows me to zoom the film in or out, with several options ranging from 1/2 size to 3X magnification. This is very useful for things like the GOUT which end up both letterboxed and pillarboxed on a 16x9 display, so you can zoom quite a bit without truncating the image at all–but of course, the poor image quality is then even more apparent.
What I’ve found annoying was this, if you may permit this OT diversion while the subject’s up.
I have this DVD - friend bought me it to rip because where he lives he would have gotten slammed hard by customs. It’s anamorphic. Contains two Detective Conan specials, made from re-cutting older 3-part episodes and adding new credits. Everything but the closing credits is 4:3 footage, from back when the show was cel-animated. The credits, including the closing animation, were done in 2007; the closing animation is CG and 16:9 AR.
…so the damn fools made the disc anamorphic and pillarboxed the 4:3 footage like the TV airing! My equipment won’t let me do anything reasonable about that, either; if I zoom in enough with the player to take the whole screen, I’ve already zoomed in WAY too much.
On the plus side, one of the specials reaired recently, so I have it now in 720p thanks to same said friend. 😉

Hey Towne, if your gonna make a 16:9 cropped version, can you make me a pan and scan version? It’s ideal for my CRT TV and I think most people would agree with me when I say it is the optimal way to watch Star Wars.
