The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS ** — Page 91

I got the Steelbook, yes I paid $8 more for fancy packaging. I’m glad to have my first Star Wars film on blu-ray.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

No. It’s not. Both choices have been scientifically proven false.

What experiments have proven that Attack of the Clones is a poor film?

In what way was my statement scientifically proven false?

It is a fact that this is in the wrong thread.

TFA was great, watching the Blu-ray tomorrow with a bunch of friends. I also got the steelbook just to match the rest of my set

AOTC was tested in a lab by several independent scientists. It was also tested in the field, again by several independent scientists. Every test came back positive for “poor film.”

Have fun. Watched it with my mom last weekend and she enjoyed it far more that time than she did when we saw it on opening day.

Chill bro, I do have the Blu-ray. I just didn’t go to the cinema because they aired dubbed version only.

Well, yeah. As I said, they only aired dubbed version here.

My review:

It was not a classic, but I found it to be stylistically pretty good. I LOVED the character with the mask with shoulder-length hair…like an evil John Travolta. What made the movie for me was Han Solo. What a great thing to see him finally acknowledge that “It’s true…all of it.” And then he gets stabbed by his son because he sticks his nose out…something Han would never have done in the OT (maybe ROTJ). In other words, it wasn’t an unnecessary movie. It progressed things.

What I didn’t like and I’m sure others have mentioned is the borrowing from other films, such as the cantina sequence, and etc. It felt a little too much like an homage to Star Wars rather than a Star Wars. As bad as the PT was, nobody could fault them for not being original (some would say originally bad). Hopefully Ep. 8 is less this way and with Luke as the bearded Jedi master, I am very excited to see what Ep. 8 brings.

Jar-Jar is the Emperor in the extra special edition of ROTJ (scenes 1, 3, and then 6 to the end).

cantina sequence

Technically the scene in Maz’s Castle only has a visual callback. In terms of plot similarities in those scenes there are next to none.

I only saw it once, but wasn’t there another Death Star capable of mass destruction? The movie felt like there was one guy that came up with a complete rehash, and then another guy that wrote comments on the side of the script that made it good, like Han Solo’s “So it’s bigger.” Essentially making fun of the movie.

Star Killer Base was definitely an overt rehash though not as overt as Death Star 2.0 and it wasn’t even as good of a plot device as the first Death Star. Luckily they put it’s destruction on the backburner for the Kylo, Han, Rey and Finn story line which was actually interesting.

True. Anyway, for any flaws, I think this one is redeemable, unlike The Phantom Menace! -TM

Would’ve disliked star killer base a lot more if it actually was the main plot device for the whole movie like Death Star 2 was.

I like that they made it kind of an afterthought just to put the finale in motion and not some giant important thing on which the whole plot hinges.

I think the destruction of the system at all just makes the fact it’s an afterthought unbearable for me. It’s like they wanted to display this things power and threat, but then didn’t want to acknowledge the importance of such a thing in the story. It just felt shoved in there. Though it may be worse in theory, making it another plot device would’ve at least given it a purpose within the film.

I agree. I felt as if it was just there to destroy the Hosnian System which may prove to be fine in the long run but as it pertains to how it effects TFA alone…it felt very shoehorned in.

In my honest opinion, if a product isn’t available in person’s country, the person should be able to pirate it.

My son watched TFA in the theater with my ex-wife in Japan, and I got to watch it with him last night for the first time (I bought the bluray for him before coming to visit).

He’s six, and this is how he views the movies:

Darth Vader turned bad once he put his mask on (he hasn’t seen TPM or AotC, but we skipped around RotS one time after watching the originals).

Darth Vader turned good when he took his mask off.

Fin was bad until he took his mask off.

So based on the above (very shaky) evidence, he thinks that if you wear a mask, you’re bad, and if you take it off, you’re good. So he was telling me that Kylo Ren is actually a good guy when he takes his mask off. The thing is, he fell asleep in the theater right before Han Solo bites the big one, so he was all like “No, he’s a good guy, dad,” so needless to say, he was pretty surprised when Han Solo got a lightsaber rammed through his chest.

He’s also in agreement that the first 30 minutes are the best part, which I found amusing.

He also thinks Rogue One looks great.

Honest question: why did Kylo have to fight Finn and Rey instead of knocking them out by pushing them with the Force, as he did earlier? He had plenty of room to focus on using the Force. IIRC, using the Force to push persons was first introduced with the PT, so comparisons with OT’s duels cannot be done.

Because he’s pompous. I mean even when he was dueling Finn he could have killed him after their first pass but he chose to prolong the fight.

Also, if you’re basically ignoring the PT and making a sequel to the OT, it doesn’t make sense to ask why he didn’t use something introduced by the PT and not used in the OT.

The only way to accurately gauge Force Abilities now seeing as how Star Wars is so expansive is to put everything is under one umbrella. Meaning we should just assume Force Pushing is viable in the OT. Especially when Vader is able to hurl objects at Luke

He does? When?

At any rate, the easy answer is “because he’d be unstoppable and that wouldn’t make a very good movie.”
