Oh look another mary sue with an attitude. I can’t wait to hear her dark and brooding backstory.

You could wait until you’ve seen the film to start calling a character you know nothing about a Mary Sue. I mean, she could very well be, but it’s pretty hard to tell from that trailer.

I like how they’ve just redressed a subway station, or something similar, for this scene. It has a nice gritty and realistic feel to it, while still looking like something from the SW universe.

Yeah I think that is canary wharf lol.

No wonder the underground is constantly closing on the weekends!

From the look, it could be any of the stations on the futuristic looking Jubilee line and the cool thing is that Secret Cinema used a Jubilee line station for their Star Wars event meeting place. I was walking round the place dressed in Star Wars gear, surrounded by other people dressed up in Star Wars costumes thinking, this totally feels like a Star Wars space station. Seeing the sequence in the movie is probably gonna be mildly surreal. Like “Was I in this scene?” 😉

By the way, I loved the Stardestroyer shot. It really felt like it had the same weight and scale of the OT shots. Nice work whoever did that. The lead character looks really interesting and different to other SW movie leads we’ve had. I’m actually stoked that the same actress is back to play Mon Mothma. She was one of the good points of the prequels, even on the cutting room floor.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

Oh come on, tell me you can’t spot the “girl with attitude is put down by the establishment but actually her attitude lets her save the day all by herself” trope from 50 lightyears away here.

A trope in movies such as?

Just read the whole thread. I’m not a bit surprised to see the usual wet-blankets complaining about the usual things.

OH NO A GIRL. THAT’S TWO!!! TWO TOO MANY!!!
OH NO MARY SUE MARY SUE MARY SUE ONLY MEN ARE ALLOWED TO DO THAT GRUNT GRUNT RRRAHR!!!
OH NO TOO MUCH LIKE STAR WARS!

I can spot the “caveman posting on a Star Wars forum” from 50 rock-throws away.

Shooting in a real subway station? Holy THX 1138! 😉

And let’s all play nice before things get too heated. The movie is 8 months away.

One of the things that really stands out to me in the trailer is how amazing this shot of the Star Destroyer looks.

Yes! and my favorite thing about that shot is how what first looks like a Wipe from a star field to the death star, turns out to be just a shadow as you see it move behind the Star Destroyer.

Of course it could just be the way the trailer is cut that made me think it was a wipe, but i assume this ‘trick’ was on purpose, and i love it.

Looking at that… the way the light hits it… do you think it’s actually a model? It feels like a model.

I’m glad to see that Mon Mothma wasn’t a CG recreation of Caroline Blakiston and was instead played by a new actor. Hopefully we’ll get something similar with Tarkin.
(I was also surprised by the inclusion of a Grand Admiral. Wasn’t that whole white uniform thing invented by Timothy Zahn in the Thrawn trilogy?)

Nope!

So is this guy a Grand Admiral? Or did Zahn retcon that later?
Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that a lo of officer on the DS wore white uniforms.

If you watched The Clone Wars, that man was retconned to be Admiral Wullf Yularen, who as of ANH, is a Colonel in the ISB. So not a Grand Admiral. To be honest, his uniform is more of an off-white than the pure white I imagine a Grand Admiral’s tunic to be. The ISB uniform also lacks the fold-over of Imperial Navy uniforms, having instead a center seam with (I assume) a zipper or hidden buttons.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Actually I did not recognize the female actress Felicity Jones but she did a very good job in the Stephen Hawking film “The Theory of everything” But in that she played a struggling wife coming to terms with her husbands regression in to becoming disabled. It was as much about her as it was about Stephen Hawking

She did do ever so well in this so perhaps she might just be a bit misunderstood the way the trailer is made but then again look at Natalie Portman who was sheer brilliance in Black Swan but awful in the Star Wars Prequels.

It really does not matter if it’s a woman or a man in the Lead role but it is important to find the right person who can believe in the fantasy.

Great…the film hasn’t even come out yet and people are already calling the lead a Mary Sue. Next people will be calling Episode VIII a rehash of ESB before the fucking concept art get’s leaked.

I was planning on not watching any trailers like I did for TFA, but curiosity got the better of me.

Visually very impressive. It’s great to see all the classic OT ships, stormtroopers, Yavin, etc. The sound of that alarm is pretty cool.

I love the idea of a Star Wars movie about the “regular joes” of the Rebellion, ie, NO JEDI.

Neutral on the lead actress, but it’s hard to tell with such a small sample size in the trailer. Her delivery of “It’s a rebellion, I rebel” is just ‘meh’ to me.

Not totally crazy about there being sophisticated martial arts in the SW universe, but it could be cool.

My one hope is that there are NO LIGHTSABERS, AND NO JEDI in the movie. My one exception would be if Vader briefly appeared, and just simply annihilated rebels with zero effort. It could be cool if he stalked them throughout the movie. Even better if he had no lines.

VERY VERY minor nitpick: “aggravated assault.” Takes me out a little bit because it immediately makes me think of the US judicial system; SW should be familiar to us, but this feels just a little too specific to earth.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

Obi Wan wore the same clothes for six movies (even when he was meant to be on the run under a slightly assumed name).

The prequel trilogy is stupid.

He also wore the same clothes after he died while Anakin wore almost identical clothes to him as a ghost despite never knowly wearing them while he was alive.

Work that one out smarty pants :-p

I kind of like The Dirty Dozen angle. Although I would think the Rebels may have attacked an Imperial ship that was taking prisoners somewhere, and is trying to figure out what to do with them.

Don’t make him whip out the novelization of an early script on you. You don’t want those problems.

Ultra Panavision 70’s are confirmed to be the lenses used here, via Panavision’s website.

http://www.panavision.com/products/ultra-panavision-70-lenses
“Feature Films: Ben Hur, The Hateful Eight, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”

http://www.panavision.com/new-rogue-one-star-wars-story-trailer
“Photographed by Greig Fraser, ACS, ASC with Panavision’s new anamorphic ULTRA PANAVISION 70 optics.”

Not surprised, given I noticed the unique artifacts of the lenses in the trailer. So I guess that means that this film really is using OLDER lenses than the ones used for the original Star Wars.

No, they are using the new Arri Alexa 65, the 6.5K digital equivalent of a 65mm film camera. This is the third film to use this camera, but first to be fully featured. IMAX is also using the Alexa 65 as a basis for their new digital IMAX camera.

What does this mean for aspect ratio? I kind of liked the idea of the non episodic films having a completely unique visual style, even down to the AR
