Star Wars Trilogy SE bluray color regrade (a WIP) — Page 22

I like those as well, but those were created using different references for different scenes, which makes it difficult to obtain consistency between shots, both in terms of color and luminosity. In addition, the color of the Tantive IV walls tended to be pretty neutral in the earlier regrades, while Mike Verta and others have maintained they should have a hint of green in them. Since, I will assist Williarob on color correcting piota’s scan of the LPP, these corrections are also a precursor to how the LPP might look, once we’re finished color correcting it. At least I would like the colors of the bluray regrade to be consistent with the corrected LPP. I suspect Despecialized v3.0 will still be mostly inspired by the Technicolor prints, so it will be nice to have this alternative color grading based on a best guess of the colors of a 1977 LPP.

Makes sense to me! And I think that’s probably exactly how it should be - Despecialized being hand-adjusted (in this case by Neverar) and the LPP using your great tool to show what it really and honestly contains.

Although this is kind of off topic to bring up, your post suggests that Williarob is going to use Poita’s scan for more than just the light-leak shots. That’s great news, as far as image quality is concerned, but it’s a ton more work involved than the former.

Ahh… so you are going in a completely different direction now! I love it. The community is suddenly getting a lot of different color choices/flavors when it comes to Star Wars.

Can we see what the Luke/C3PO/Owen/R5-D4 shot looks like in this “Spanish LPP” version? And what does LPP stand for exactly?

LPP stands for Lowfade Positive Print stock. It was introduced by Kodak in 1982.

I thought that was already established (especially since almost every shot had some light leak), but whatever.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Since he seems not to be aware, this is the print Team Negative 1 used for their SSE release.

I didn’t see it spelled out that clearly. But it was an assumption on my part. Mostly because using it for the whole film will be a tremendous amount of work, compared to the soon-to-be-released v2 Williarob has alluded to.

AHH!! Which then must mean that DrDre has a version of the scan of the print that hasn’t been color corrected!

Yes, I used one of the early uncorrected samples…

I love the depth of field in the regrade. It makes it look like great still photography.
PS I realize it’s in the BD too, but it’s not nearly so noticeable.

Everything just seems so right about these new photos. I can’t wait for the final version!

Not sure when I will be able to work on this again (somehow I always end up building an algo, which I guess is my strong suit), but I thought I would post some test regrades, based on the automated correction I did of the raw scan of the SSE:

The Tantive 4 shots look fantastic. The Tatooine shots would need IMHO a bit more saturation, but that’s just my opinion, I’m not claiming it “should” be saturated 😃

Our eyes have become accustomed to way too much red saturation for these films even though the skin tones are unnatural.

I feel it too. The pull to the [red] light.

Now that poita and williarob are testing the color restoration tool, it is time to start working on the bluray regrade again. Updates will follow soon…

Rather than posting a bunch of random frames, like before, I will start with the Luke meets Obi-Wan scene, do the regrade for the entire scene, and present the results for all of you to critique. 😃
