The saber shot is uncropped compared to 2.5, using the blu-ray as the background. So, it looks like that with adjusted color and the blade from SSE.

Ok, cool! Be sure to post a comparison later on 😉

Harmy said he wants to do the gallery type that he always makes. Not sure what versions will be represented. Maybe GOUT/2.5/2.7/BD?

I dunno. GOUT/SSE/2.7/BD might be the most interesting IMO.

^That would be cool. Though it wouldn’t show any improvement to Despecialized. We wouldn’t get the comparison to the previous version.

Well, I think 2.5 is probably the most essential to include. No need for both gout and SSE IMO. Though a gout vs SSE gallery totally independent of this would be interesting.

The color timing isn’t based on SSE timing, and SSE isn’t a reference color source anyway. I think my suggestion would be in line with harmy’s prior ones, just with 2.5 instead of 1.0.

It would kinda serve a different purpose – rather than “what’s changed in this version?”, it’s “how does despecialized compare to the best offerings from three other avenues?” I find the latter to be a more interesting question.

Yeah. But only a few shots are further despecialized and they’re literally the SSE which would also be in the comparison. It looks more cleaned up in motion, but a still comparison wouldn’t be incredibly useful

Aside from your subs, which I’m now realizing might be what you have in mind. 😃 harmy could switch it up for those like he did for Jedi with puggo. Could swap out the gout and show SSE for those ones.

Edit: also aside from the saber in Ben’s hut. But that’s a prime candidate for comparing to 2.5 IMO.

The other most prevelant and probably noticeable changes throughout are the color, though. And the comparison between 2.5 and 2.6 helped a lot of people understand the point of it. But perhaps we can vary the sources depending on the shot.

Edit: also GOUT is not what I would consider a best offering. 😉

Just because it’s crap doesn’t mean it’s not still the best version of Star Wars you can buy!

Well, in working on the saber shot I did notice a problem with the SSE. For one frame there is a little misplaced saber glow blurb spot that appears to the right of Ben as he’s handing the saber to Luke which is present in every home video release of the OOT. In the SSE, it isn’t there. I assume it was accidentally scrubbed out by their cleanup process. It saw something looked different than a frame before and a frame after, so it interpreted it as dirt and scrubbed it out. There is still evidence of it being there originally though, as even though it got rid of most of it, there is a subtle blue halo that remains in that spot on the frame.

It just makes me wonder if there are any other details like that which the SSE inadvertently got rid of.

True. And the only version of “Star Wars”, too.

It’s not even really that – '93 audio. Which actually means it’s the best-looking version of Star Wars you can buy, an important distinction.

Slight delay. Seems my system doesn’t like when .bat files contain quotes around filenames, so the second VBR pass didn’t run during the day as I hoped. It’s running now, but hopefully it will be able to be uploaded overnight.

Edit: Nope. Pass 2 is much slower in x264. Maybe it’ll get uploaded tomorrow.

I loved your 2.6, so if you’re looking for another early watcher, it would be my pleasure.

To be clear: the version that’s going up tomorrow will be '77 crawl only? Is there an '81 or '97 version in the works for the near future? I’m trying to decide whether or not to burn this. Honestly, with the last one I found that the ANH crawl was as jarring after a couple years of the '77 as the '77 was when I first found despecialized, so I’m no longer totally sure where I stand. If ANH is coming in the near future, I might hold out, but if it’s going to be a while I might just go with the standard version.

I’ll do that at some point once I’ve gotten all the feedback for the main (77) version and get it on myspleen and everything. So probably another week or two at the earliest.

Towne, approximately how big is the MKV file going to be?

I really hope everyone loves my last minute change in tastes as far as color timing goes. I think it’s really the way the film was meant to look.

For literally ZERO quality loss in the comfort of my home, I just plug in external hard drive and play all my Star Wars movies from there. I burn blu Rays for the sake of mobility.

Yes, but the TV I do most of my Star Wars viewing on (the one hooked up to my 5.1 system) is old enough that it can’t handle video through the USB port, and the physical distribution of stuff in the room makes the laptop-through-HDMI thing kind of a pain in the ass. Discs are way more convenient for me, provided I’m in the possession of blank discs (which I currently am).

I watch most things via USB HDDs, but I burn those I plan on hanging on to for a long while or watching at someone else’s place. And it serves as another backup copy.

Too far, man! 😄

I wanted to be extra cruel and do the binary sunset, but I’m doing this remotely and just grabbed some 2011 BD shots via Google. 😉
