Also, you really should keep Rey’s theme though. There is no way in fuck you can tell me that it’s not a great piece of music and doesn’t fit her character.

The awful troll I happen to be (against my will I may add) surprisingly agrees with this post.

Dude he was just giving his thoughts, no need to be hasty

I think you meant “nasty” and if so I guess that is a bit harsh but there will be a metric fuckton of TFA edits and if he wants any chance of a sizable number of people enjoying it then he has to be a little flexible when criticism is given. Especially given that quite a few of his ideas are questionable.

And I agree with your assessment on the ST losing it’s “sound” identity if you completely remove the soundtrack 😄

Well I’m not posting the majority of things I’m changing because the edit I’m making is for myself. If you’re making an edit for people to see I think it’d be best to listen to the people. No?

Also, you really should keep Rey’s theme though. There is no way in fuck you can tell me that it’s not a great piece of music and doesn’t fit her character.

Well, I expected more enthusiasm, but I guess that’s my fault. But making an edit for people to see doesn’t automatically mean you take every piece of consideration over your gut instinct. Suggestions and feedback are fantastic, and great for shaping the edit as a whole, but if the edit is something you want to see, you just do it. I’m not going to leave the original music in. It’s going. Simple.

Eh, I say do what you want to do. There are edits out there that appeal to the masses, because some films are so flawed that it’s hard to disagree with the changes.

But there will be folks who are outliers, like you wanting to take out good parts of TFA or Scott wanting to add crappy parts back to the PT. Even if you’re the only person who ever watches it, I say go for it. You’ll learn about editing techniques and maybe have a change of heart for some decisions if you see they don’t work.

I disagree with almost every idea of yours, but you’re 100x better off than someone who instead spends his time begging others to make changes for him. Especially when they’re changes that interest no one else.

Also, while Rey’s theme is very good, it sounded a bit much like Harry Potter music (Same composer, I know).

And HARRY POTTER sounds like HOME ALONE, but I don’t really think of Macaulay Culkin when I see Daisy Ridley.

So I had a look at the bluray, and it looks like the teal tint has vanished. The stormtroopers at the beginning look completely normal colour-wise.

Out of interest, does anybody else feel that this film has a reality tv vibe in regards to its looks? It just deosn’t look like a film at certain points at all (I’m going by the bluray here, but I remember even the theatrical version’s last scene looked like I filmed on my iPhone). I wonder if people feel it isnt cinematic enough, or that Disney once again went retreated from what fans disliked about the prequels, only to overdo it.

Unless you have an inside track at Disney/Lucasfilm, I seriously doubt you looked at it legally.

Jeez, yeah, people are overreacting way too much to some of my changes. When I say cut down certain scenes, I mean literally cut out only like two or three seconds of the scene. Nothing major.

Also, I’m totally willing to discuss. That’s actually what I’ve been doing, and I’ve been also offering my reasons for why some edits will stay in no matter what.

I apologize if some of you have problems with my edit. I really do appreciate all responses and I look forward to be able to show you my final product.

Hey, I don’t agree with a lot of your edit ideas, but all that’s important is that you make the film the way YOU like it. If anyone doesn’t like your choices, then they can create their own edit, or choose from the metric nut-ton of TFA edits that are surely to come.
No reason you should have to stick to what other people want for YOUR edit. Even if nobody else likes it or wants to watch it, what’s important is that YOU are happy with it, otherwise what’s the point of making an edit? Might as well stick to the theatrical at that point.

Well if you’re releasing it to the public why wouldn’t you want people to enjoy it? But then again he hasn’t said whether this was for the public or if he’s making a personal fan edit like I am.

Some of the changes are pretty jarring and others seem to be done for no apparent reason. We’re not saying you should off yourself but you couldn’t have been expecting praise for some of these ideas.

When I say cut down certain scenes, I mean literally cut out only like two or three seconds of the scene. Nothing major.

Well taking out something like Kylo Ren’s violent fits hurts his characterization seeing as how he’s getting a full blown character arc in this trilogy.

I apologize if some of you have problems with my edit.

You don’t have to apologize (with the exception of the street slang thing) but I’m just trying to help you see why a lot of these changes would irritate a lot of people and would turn them off to your edit.

Lord Haseo. U should think about releasing ur edit publicly. I find I agree with you about many things concerning TFA.

Once I see the film again I’ll compile my full cut list for you guys and if anyone is interested based on that I’ll share it.

what main edits would u be making?

  • The Kylo Ren is the son of Han and Leia reveal is going to be a bit less obvious (I’m removing the line “You cannot deny the truth of your family” line but I will be keeping the line “I know where you come from, before you called yourself Kylo Ren”)

  • Add music from the OT and PT where I deem the film can benefit from it though a decent amount of the original score will be intact

  • Reducing the amount of awkwardness that surrounds Finn when he is around Rey

  • Removing obvious fan service (training ball droid, the board game in STAR WARS and even showing all of the aliens in Maz’s Castle)

  • Nerf Poe’s flying ability a bit (mainly the implausibility of the kill streak he goes when fighting on Takodana)

Possible ideas:

  • Adding film grain

  • Color correcting certain scenes (probably not going to do this though)

  • Make Starkiller Base a sun killing weapon that destroys Systems by proxy from freezing (this will be problematic to make work)

  • Changing the title of the film to Star Wars Episode VII: Awakening of The Force

As it pertains to minor things there are just mostly going to cuts to certain lines of dialogue but a couple of miscellaneous small things I’m going to do are:

  • Removal the TIE Fighter exploding in the sand
  • Make it so that when our heroes are spotted in Maz’s Castle the First Order spy sees them and reports that she found the droid and the Resistance droid does so a minute or two later
  • Trimming the on foot chase when Finn and Rey are being perused by Storm Troopers.
  • Trimming the Rathtar scene
  • Removal of the weirder than fuck hug between Leia and Rey
  • Trimming the interrogating in the interrogation scene between Rey and Kylo Ren
  • Making Snoke’s hologram obviously a hologram
  • Remove helicopter shot

…shit like that though I don’t have a full grasp on everything yet.

This is going to be my personal edit of the film. It is mostly pretty minor changes but it will make the film flow better in my opinion:

-Remove 90% of Maz’s Scenes (pointless exposition)

  1. None of her explaining what the force is, how she’s seen many eyes, etc. What she says is nonessential to the plot in my opinion
  2. Rey will have the lightsaber flashback and will run out of the tavern immediately afterwards (no Maz pointlessly explaining to the audience that the lightsaber was calling to her)
  3. Remove Maz telling Finn that a lightsaber is a weapon (he already knows this as he has seen Kylo use one, so it doesn’t make sense)

-Remove some Starkiller base items

  1. Reduce the First Order Motivational Speech
  2. Remove Starkiller base firing scene and the reactions (no ties to these characters whatsoever and the planet they are firing on isn’t explained either)

In addition here are some dream edits I would like to make but do not possess the skills or sources to do so at the moment:

-Change the sound mix to be more like the other 6 films, where the music is quite a bit louder than it is in The Force Awakens (honestly I think TFA has a very good soundtrack, it was just drowned out). This would of course require possession of multitracks to do right or very significant processing to try and extract certain elements out.

-Change the color correction of the film to be closer to the Original Trilogy. TFA looks great and was shot very well, but I do not agree with the final color correction.

Thanks! I am not sure what Myspleen’s policy on Fan Edits for TFA is going to be due to the legality of it all and how recent the film is. Hopefully though we will have an easy way to share these things.
