Here’s some shots from the Test render v2.65 Video
with subtitles from v2.5

These I like…

Sorry Towne but I had to replace your Audio with the English 5.1
my Thai is a tad weak!

What was the method you used to overlay the old subtitles? They shouldn’t line up, so presumably you are taking some of the old video sequence too and blending it to patch.

There’s no need for any of that. If I use the 2.5 subtitles it will be by using the entire sequence as it is in 2.6.

Edit1: Also, you’re using Han’s .sup subs for some reason in your sample.

Edit2: I think I misunderstood. You’re just demonstrating my most recent preview’s compatibility with Catbus’s 2.5 main sup subtitles?

Looking forward Towne32! I’ve seen the 2.6 you released. Keep up the good work.

I just used the English Subs to see how they looked beside the Alien hard-coded subs
for my own curiosity. I think I remembered Catbus stating elsewhere that his subs were
getting very close in style & alignment, but I may be mistaken there too.

I thought I recognized your foul stench when I entered this forum!

Yup! LOL! 😄

and… I believed that the Test Render was still using Subs unchanged from v2.6 which are
the same as 2.5? at least they looked the same to my old eyes.

Well, I am fairly indifferent to the choice of Eastman vs. Technicolor styled subs. I kind of like the thicker looking letters, but if there is a strong consensus opinion here, I can probably go with that, unless Harmy sways the vote in either direction. 😃

Author

Well, you’re still sticking with (adjusted) Technicolor timing so I’d say don’t mix-and-match.

I decided to post this link here because I was looking at Towne32s’ latest clips for any errors.
What made me stop and take notice was the sudden color change of the Bantha in the back ground.
Then all the other differences jumped. Why have I never seen this before? I dunno!
The lightning is very different with the 2 scenes shot many hours (or days) apart, the Jawas for example are
at first in the shade then in the sun. The antennas on the roof are different. From Harmy’s YouTube video I know he did alot of work on the 2nd of these shots. My question is “was all this the case in the Original Film or was the 1st shot redone for the SE?” Please forgive me if this has been asked before and beaten to death as I’m kinda new around here!

That’s not a bantha.

The SE has a CGI abomination in place of that Dewback.

I don’t have access to the individual elements Harmy used to make these shots, so all I can do is adjust the entire shot as a whole. If you try to make one element look perfect, you can screw up another aspect. I’ve stated it plenty of times, but I’ll say it again: if you’re looking for a perfectly consistent version, you’re not going to get it from me.

I’m not sure why you posted this here instead of the PM where we’re discussing the preview.

But yes, my understanding is that they were not shot at the same time, because the first image (chronologically) is a matte painting they made later because they had no footage of the cantina without extras in front of it. So the shadows are different, etc.

Wrong thread… thank’s for that link.

Actually now I’ve recently seen evidence that, regarding subtitles, the Technicolor prints more or less exactly match SSE. So I think that the thicker subtitles are more accurate than the ones in 2.5. The ones I provided earlier are a little rough around the edges, and I’ll be working on better versions, but for now I think they’re the best we’ve got.

You work wasn’t in question, I think it looks great. Perhaps I should’ve posted in the main Harmy 2.5 thread.
I don’t have access to anything to compare to, guess I need to acquire the GOUT just for my own curiosity.
The original film was far from consistent, so no I’m not looking for that.

Got ya. Well, while the GOUT is no ideal, it might be the best to refer to if you’re discussing inconsistencies, rather than heavily modified versions that have been torn down and rebuilt.

Catbus: So… I should go back to the BD+new subs?

That’s my opinion, yeah. Still recolor them to be not as bright.

Like my test render (what I was planning to use as final) or even less bright?

Also, can you clarify the reason for changing your mind, just so I understand it. You still think SSE/Tech are the same basic subs, you just find that the 2.5 ones weren’t a perfect match (to either Tech/SSE)?

The idea came from me - when I was re-creating the subs for v2.0, I didn’t have the Tech reference scans yet and Mike Verta posted that Greedo picture posted above, which I assumed to be an image from an IB print, so I used that as the basis for the subtitle font and then used Puggo Grande to get the timing and placement of the recreated subtitles right. When I later got the Tech references from Mike, it never occurred to me to check if the font is right, because I just assumed it must be, if the image I based it on was from an IB scan. But when all this discussion broke out and CatBus asked me, if I had any other subtitle references, I went back to the IB reference scans and found out the subs are pretty much identical to the SSE and I am now pretty sure that the image I based the subs on originally is actually a recreation!

Interesting stuff. That settles it I guess.

Harmy, did the grain, weave, and brightness look okay in my preview?

Harmy, I used a frequency of 12 and mag 0.5 because it was very jittery at 24 freq. Looks good enough I think? The grain was more apparent in AE than the render, but it might just be my display.

Actually (and this is a mistake I made too) perhaps the grain is a bit too much - look at other white things in those shots and the grain should pretty much match the grain on those.
The weave is perhaps still a bit too much too - looking at the SSE, the weave should probably be more like 0.2 or 0.3.

Also, there’s something wrong with those subs is the SSE - like there’s this weird rounded-up aliasing on them - probably some sort of resizing artifact.

Any progress?

Yes!

Watching the second half of the film today. But it should be 100% complete, I think.

I did end up using Catbus’s great new subtitles based on the 35mm (newer and better version than in this thread). I’ve also cleaned up and color corrected TN1’s “A Long Time Ago” card for the intro, for those who are unaware. The final MKV should be done and muxed in the next few days. And then anyone here who wants that can have it. Once a number of people have reported that all is okay it can go on spleen.

It will be version 2.7 and final as far as my involvement with Despecialized editing goes.

Ok, great news! Looking forward to see the final result!

Once it’s done and checked, I’d like to make an official announcement that v2.7 is out - giving you all the due credit, of course - and put it up on tehp. It would be good to put together a short text description and a browseable gallery of the changes for that - obviously not all the color changes, just a few best examples, but all the 35mm shots and stuff.

Thanks Harmy! I really appreciate that.

I’ll put a short text description, and maybe more of an nfo, together this time. Previously, it was more of a ramble put together to make the project goal perfectly clear in a way that didn’t step on your toes (in the eyes of your fans, as I already ran things by you).

I’ve made the post-credits ‘thank you’ segment as well, including the names you mentioned as well as a few others at the end.

For color related gallery images, we can consider those which people like the most. Some things have changed for 2.7, though. Green has been taken out of many of the Death Star walls (don’t worry, they’re blue) and also from some desert shots. So we can see what everyone thinks is good and representative for a gallery once everyone has had a chance to take a look.

I’ve gone back to the blu-ray for some scenes, including the cockpit shots after fleeing Tatooine. It seemed necessary for getting the most out of the BD, as the 2004 master was really botched in these scenes compared to 35mm scans. Just devoid of color, so more difficult to work with something that has already been adjusted.

We can also use the gallery to show off the subtitles that Catbus made. 😃
