Also, I’m guessing that most Star Wars fans dislike Robocop 2 even though it is directed by Irvin Kershner.

Well pretty much all films directed by Kershner are either bad or average at best. The exception is ESB, where he was mainly actor director while Lucas was creative director behind the film.

Zardoz gets referenced in everything from music videos to Rick & Morty, so I don’t think it’s too underrated.

Well, he wasn’t very involved with the film during production, so I wouldn’t really say creative director.

Well if by production you mean principal photography then you are right. After all that is when actors are directed and scenes are recorded, which was what Kershner was hired for. However, when it comes to creatively most important elements such as story, main ideas, screenplay, working with visual artists (McQuarrie and Johnston), etc., it was pretty much Lucas at the helm.

The PT is proof that directing actors is just as important as everything else.

It is important but not nearly as important as the elements I mentioned. There are plenty of films that have rather average acting but are great because of the idea/story/screenplay (for example Terminator and Predator).

And besides, it is not like PT’s only problem (or main one for that matter) is bad acting. It also has bad ideas, storyline, characters and dialogue.

But GL didn’t hardly have to do with Empire at all other than the idea and the early draft. His draft was revised, then that revision was rewritten several times by several people. Lucas was like, standing to the side of the helm, looking at something else.

Quote a source for this.

It’s the same source he quoted for the “US founded as a Christian nation” thing…i.e. he made it up.

There are movies where the reverse is true.

Obviously he has no idea about the subject, let alone a source.

I honestly couldn’t think of any but I would like to hear your examples. I my opinion great acting alone just cannot make a film, with average idea/story/screenplay, great. While there are countless more examples I can give for the reverse case.

For all you claiming I made up the source on my claim, this article speaks of it, for starters:

http://fd.noneinc.com/secrethistoryofstarwarscom/secrethistoryofstarwars.com/marcialucas.html

Here’s an excerpt:
“Lucas wasn’t interested in making Star Wars films so he stayed home in California while Kershner directed it in England. It was much more logistically complicated than anyone had anticipated, and ended up weeks over schedule and millions of dollars over budget. Lucas flew to England a few times, but otherwise watched the picture disintegrate from a distance, horrified as he saw his investment go to waste. He re-edited the film out of desperation but it was a disaster, and Kershner had to re-cut it…”

I probably heard something about the subject in the past and that’s what came out; as in, I don’t think I made it up, but rather remembered something incorrectly. And I did look it up and found sources on the subject for both sides, anyway, in which of course, the against was correct.

Lots of stuff in Secret History is a bullshit. Just by looking at the amateurish style and laughably subjective anti-Lucas tone in which it is written should make a sanse person realise the book is ridiculous. I mean the short text you provided already gives you a good idea about that.

If you want a good objective documentary-standard source, go read Making of books by Rinzler.

I’m not a sanse person, so I never realized it was ridiculous. And it is quite anti-Lucas, but nothing in it seemed to contradict reality (in the Marcia Lucas page that I posted), so I wouldn’t know how much of it is BS.

Interesting read, thanks for the link. I’m not trying to argue that Lucas was the visionary genius behind ESB. I just felt that it was a broad statement that “GL didn’t hardly have [anything] to do with Empire at all other than the idea and the early draft. His draft was revised, then that revision was rewritten several times by several people. Lucas was like, standing to the side of the helm, looking at something else.”

Or better yet, try to find a copy of this.

And since the author of Secret History is still a member of this forum last time I checked, tone down the nasty?
