The best PT is one’s imagination based on OT.

That’s been my opinion for a long time.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Look, if it’s someone’s first time watching, then 4,5,6 then 1,2,3.

If not, then do it whatever way sounds best to you. I try and never do the same order twice in a row. I think there’s merit in each way of viewing. My favorite is the machete order if I’m just watching by myself, but seriously it’s whatever way u wanna watch them, man.

In preparation for TFA I did them in numerical order.

You watched the PT before TFA? Why stain your mind mid-marathon just for the sake of completion? 😕

I don’t think you should end with the prequels if you’re a first time watcher. If you’re a first time watcher and you’re gonna do the prequels, machete order works best. You have to end with ROTJ.

I think the best way to watch it is

1,4,5,2,3,6,7

1 you get to know Anakin Skywalker, the slave/person/pilot/etc. Then it skips to Luke, hiding the reveal of Anakin becoming dark in 2, and the Vader turn in 3. You also remember how good of a pilot Anakin was, when Obi-wan is talking about him to Luke. You find out who Vader is in 5, so you go back to Episodes 2 and 3 to watch how Anakin became Vader, to finish the saga you RETURN to see 6 and go right into 7.

or

You can just watch 4,5,6, then 1,2,3, and finally 7.

I’d like to say that I never, ever ever understood the appeal of Machete Order. I mean, you start out with the situation where you’re out of screwdrivers to jam into your eyeballs and therefore have to watch the prequels – okay, fine, I’m with you so far. But then you decide… hey, I’m no masochist, I’m going to skip some of the prequels, but then you go ahead and choose the two most painful prequels to watch! I can’t see the appeal of that at all.

0,5,6: for the complete saga, adding 7 when available
0,5: for the highlights
0,5,6,1: to see how everything went wrong, without having to wallow in it for two more films

What the heck is film zero?

Star Wars. It doesn’t have an episode number. I guess (null) would have been better.

The only justification I consider reasonable for Machete (or Rister) order is when you’re with someone who hasn’t seen them before and insists on including the prequels in their first viewing (which is what the situation was with a couple of the people in the group I did my pre-TFA marathon with). I would never, ever want to start a new viewer on any of the prequels, and doing them all at the end after we’ve already seen all of the movies I actually like is such a demoralizing prospect. If the other party can be persuaded not to do it all in one go, I recommend marathoning the OT (and now I guess TFA) and then coming back to the PT at a later date just to get an idea of what I now think of as the bad old days.

For my own viewings, if I’m expanding things beyond the OT (which I sometimes do, since I find watching the PT with like-minded friends and creating our own commentary once in a long while to be an enjoyable experience in its own right) and I don’t need to take newbies into consideration, I tend to prefer to spread it out over a couple days: be baffled by the PT on day one, be delighted by the OT on day two, and for now, either tack TFA onto the end of the second day or watch it on its own soon after. If I’m in charge of programming on whatever my gang’s pre-VIII marathon ends up being, I’m thinking PT two weekends before VIII, OT the following weekend, and then TFA earlier in the day before we head to the theater.

I have the perfect order for newcomers :

  1. STAR WARS Despecialized Edition
  2. The Empire Strikes Back Despecialized Edition
  3. Return of the Jedi Despecialized Edition
  4. The Phantom Menace until Anakin appears (never watch more of the prequels and even The Clone Wars TV show)
  5. The Force Awakens legally

Confused on why such a terrible useless movie would ever be included in a Star Wars marathon?

Exactly because the Phantom Menace is terrible and useless. It helps explain many of JJ Abrams directing choices for the Force Awakens (practical effects). Ommiting Anakin and the other 2 prequels helps keep the mysteries that made the original trilogy so immersive.

What ? Most of EpI is practical effects. Do you think Maz is practical effet ?

I think “most” is pushing it, but yeah, TPM has plenty of practical effects. It still has too many bad CG effects though. Maz is not a practical effet . 😉

Yeah, I know for Maz, it’s cgi. Bad CG in EpI ? EpII has strong cgi issues, but EpI is well done. But shitty designs for the pod racers and the annoncer. Jar Jar is still impressive nowadays.

Watch them in this order:

Star Wars
Phantom Menace
Return of the Jedi
Empire Strikes Back
Revenge of the Sith
From Star Wars to Jedi
Attack of the Clones

Then watch Rebels, followed by the Clone Wars

It’s better than AOTC and ROTS, but it’s not fantastic. Like when a piece of the double-head-guy’s model intersects with itself. It’s still the only prequel I can bare to watch, and I might even want to some time in the future, purely for childhood nostalgia. Theatrical version specifically though.

I would appreciate (to an extant) revisiting the pan & scan version of the Phantom Menace. I have not seen it in over a decade now! The other two prequels I really have no desire to see again as long as I live.

I tend to forget that because it’s been corrected in the 2011 release.

^It’s been said a thousand times, but ol’ George couldn’t even leave TPM alone.

Yeah, I was referring to the pan & scan when I said theatrical. Is there anything different between the versions? I was under the impression that it didn’t undergo changes until the DVD release, but I don’t know. Anyway, I always prefer the original/intended aspect ratio, even when I grew up with mostly pan & scan versions, so the Theatrical reconstruction would be my ideal version to re-watch.

Not really any changes to my knowledge. Apparently one shot is shortened because it was impossible to pan & scan properly. I still am not even sure about that though.

I’ve never understood why some folks have a soft spot for pan and scan. I mean, I grew up on them, even into the early DVD era, but now I can’t bear to watch them. Even 2.45:1 cropped to 16x9 for cable eeks me.

Sorry. I was too lazy to come up with something else and besides the Phantom Menace has the worst looking Blu Ray of the series, mainly due to the CGI.
