I do need to get the 16mm tv spot (which is not on the DVD) scanned one of these days.

We have good news and we have good news! thxita has found and secured an Italian 35mm print and it’s gorgeous! (see photos) It may be similar to the ITA tv recording many of you are familiar with, and the credits are in Italian, but the 16mm print can help there.
What is needed is some donations to cover shipping costs to get it scanned, any cleaning that’s needed and HDDs to store the scan. We still need 600 euros.
This is the closest we have gotten to getting THX back to it’s 1971 glory. Do it for OMM!

OMM will forgive those who need to change their underwear right now.

The day has indeed arrived when we can finally say that we are able to recreate the American theatrical version of the film from 35mm! With correct colors and missing scenes (Pleasance with the kids)… along with the Italian version of the same film which is of course a great additional feature for me, being from Italy and all.

Colors are phenomenally preserved, the scan will be done in 4k and released in 1080p (eventually also in 4K when that technology will become more widespread). We will get a grindhouse version first and then a definitive and digitally cleaned-up version shortly after. There are more great plans for this project in the future, which at the time I cannot divulge but, trust me, it’s great stuff.
The hell with Lucas’ director’s cut. We finally got the original film, unaltered and well preserved!

Any economical help to make it happen is highly appreciated. We have top men working on it already but, like SilverWook correctly stated, I still need around 600 euro (624 to be exact, but say 600) for the needed HDDs and to cover some of the shipping. If you want to help out, PM me for my PayPal address. Once I have the full amount, this whole thing can be done very quickly.

o.O;

I just had to put my eyes back in their sockets.

Whoa!! I can hardly wait to peruse those …
… Hey! I can’t see the frames clearly!! Who’s got the shaky hands?!?

Mr. Spock, what can your Vulcanian eyes tell us?

“Hmmmph … poor photography …”
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must attend to the underwear changing.”

The guy who sold it to me had shaky hands, or rather he was photographing in poor light.

I am willing to contribute. Where do I send the money?

EDIT Nevermind, I saw the post about sending a PM. Thanks!

Here’s an early look (with some corrections applied) to give you an idea how the first grindhouse version will look, before digital clean-up.

First two reels (of four) are being scanned. I’m still short of another 470 euros to do the rest. Any of you willing to give a hand, this is the right moment ;D

Wow! Those samples look amazing! We should remember that this was shot in the early 70s in Techniscope - so that’s half a normal Academy 35mm frame to create a widescreened image - and then blown up and squeezed to a normal anamorphic standard. Grain haters need should leave now…

LOL, well, grain haters will also benefit from this preservation, thanks to the future plans we have for this film! Don’t make me say anything else because at the moment I can’t ahah!
Here’s another tease, the last bottom picture has been adjusted to have an idea of the final look (before the digital clean-up!)

@ thxita

When you have opportunity, would you please show a raw screen-cap of this shot (at the beginning of the movie and of this exact frame, if convenient; note the child’s moving feet position) . .

On page 77 of this thread, poita made mention of this very badly faded shot being the worst he had seen. After deep analysis & flash of insight™, I concluded it was actually colorized B&W footage, probably salvaged from some production mishap and unlike any other shot in the entire film. The test of my theory was processing that shot (laserdisc source) from B&W (by complete color desaturation) to colorized (by simple R-G-B biasing, as might be done in the analog 70’s) … which exactly reproduced the original-release shot!

As you may guess, I’m quivering with anticipation (and it’s making me wait) to see that shot in original, reference-quality condition.

Ahah, I didn’t remember this from 20 pages ago but it’s very curious and it will be investigated but it might take a bit (screengrabs that I posted were ones that were sent to me). Remind me about this once I have the full scan at hand.

What ever happened with Antonio’s Fabulous laserdisc capture?

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

I thought it was a good post and didn’t recall seeing that link before. But what’s a duplicate link among the masses? 😃

I know! I’m dying to see that one, too! (And, or course, his setup for doing it.) Think positive, or you’ll end up getting old … like these people . .

I’ve been trying to find obscure and rare articles/reviews regarding THX 1138. I just came across this one from Castle of Frankenstein issue #17 :

Besides misspelling Lucas’ name, it’s a cool little piece celebrating the film.
