Nearly two years in the making, this original Star Wars fan film offers us a pre-Episode I look at Darth Maul doing what he does best as he takes on a team of Jedi.

Saw it last night. Put a new standard on fan films.

I don’t understand the hype over this fan film. I mean sure it looked cool, but there wasn’t much of a story. It was basically twenty minutes of highly choreographed fighting.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool in like a shut off your brain and watch some cool fight choreography and stunts way, but I don’t get why people are saying its like “the film we all wanted/deserved”. It’s just some dragged out fighting bookended by a sorta cool thing with the emperor for context. In that sense it didn’t really give us anything we didn’t see in the prequels already.
The only real difference between this and every other fan film showing over the top lightsaber choreography in a forest (idk why the hell every fan film has to take place in a forest setting) is that one of the guys is dressed like Darth Maul.

Once, again, I’m not saying it’s BAD. It accomplished what it wanted to very well, which is some kickass lightsaber fighting with some good looking camera work. I enjoyed it for sure. I’m just saying I’m not getting the overwhelming amount of hype is all.

I think every fan film takes place in a forest because other exotic locations are too expensive and just filming it on the street would be amateur.

Not enough people read the EU.

Thank you for letting me know to not bother with this, as was my original impulse.

Most fan-editors seem to think the final saber duel is the only bit of TPM worth keeping.

This replicates it to some extent.

It might be possible to re-purpose some of it for alternate shots but it would only be tinkering with the only bit of that film some people like.

Personally I don’t rate the fight in TPM because everyone is silent, other than (and Frink has already improved this) Obi-Wan screaming, “noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo”

What I like about the OT duels is the real fight is taking place inside the minds of the characters. The real swipes and jabs are the dialogue. In TPM (like all the dueling in the PT) it’s just experimental dance. They might as well all wear unitards.

I imagine this film was made by people with PT nostalgia (young people seem to be getting older every day, it’s very odd). In terms of what’s happening it doesn’t make sense.
Maul surprises the council when Qui-Gon informs them about him, they assume the Sith to be extinct and have no known reported missing Jedi or reported saber slain Jedi.

By the time they do know about him he is killed before he can kill another Jedi after Qui-Gon. (Oh yeah that he survived as a crotchless spider is now canonised “sigh”).

Any way the fan film would have worked better if we saw Maul fight non-Jedi, Like here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9UEV-b2Ws4 (only less silly). A fan film where he helps put down resistance on Naboo would be fun to watch and useful for fan-editors.

Wait, you would actually watch a 17 minute fanfilm for the plot?

Umm… Yes? Why else would you? If I’m throwing away 17 minutes of my life, I want to get something out of it beyond “it looked cool”. It’s no different than watching any short film except it’s in the Star Wars universe.

I wouldn’t watch a seventeen minute fanfilm for anything other than money.

There’s not much plot you can get out of a 17 minute fan film and still have it be entertaining. Now if it were a long one and it had no story I would understand.

Are you kidding? Clearly you’ve never seen a good short film. Some of the best stories I’ve seen have been told in less than ten minutes with no dialogue.

Music isn’t the original for copyright issues so just watch muted because the music they added is really off-putting but still. And it’s not HD but it’s the only video I found with the full vesion.

Yeah just watched that fan film… Hmm Good Action and some bad action too but it was not all bad, it was quite mediocre, no plot, special effects and fighting choreography really. The Force push battle made me laugh!

One of my Favourite short films is this one.

There’s more to entertainment than just action and visually exciting things happening on screen. Not saying that’s the reason you weren’t entertained by them, but its a valid point. I’m sorry you weren’t too entertained by them, but we’re talking about telling stories here. The whole point was to illustrate that it is possible to tell a compelling story in a short amount of time.

Imagine something with the sense of action that this Darth Maul fan film had, but with an interesting story attached. I’d rather have a shorter action sequence amidst a compelling story, than a very large action sequence bookended by these framing devices that could have been developed into something more interesting.
