I found that less believable than Anakin building 3PO.

It’s not that people don’t believe Anakin had the capability to build C3P0 it’s the fact that his mum wouldn’t need a protocol droid…ever.

I don’t know. There had to be some long lonely nights before she married Cliegg. 😉

I’m afraid the midichlorians are still to blame for that. Billions had to die, but the Force was going to get balanced whether anyone wanted it or not.

Surely she would wipe his memory; I doubt C3P0 would keep that to himself.

What’s funny is that there’s a sidequest in Kotor where you a woman has become irrationally attached to a protocol droid after her husband dies. So it’s possible I guess…

Ahahahahaha. I love how Mad Max won 6 Oscars, but Episode 7 didn’t win anything. Mad Max and The Hateful Eight FTW.

“Fury Road” is by far the best 2015 movie. It should have won Best picture and Best director as well. 6 oscars out of 10 is still good, the movie has cost so much (and didn’t bring enough money at the box office) that Warner Bros had high expectations about academy awards winning. Not sure if it’s enough to save Miller’s skin though (we won’t be seing another Mad Max soon i’m afraid, at least not a Mad Max directed by Miller). The guy is a genius but his last 2 films have not been the financial successes they deserved to be.

I’m sure Disney and Lucasfilm are crying all the way to their life size replica of Scrooge McDuck’s money bin. 😉

Not to mention I’ve seen plenty of Oscar winners that were simply dreadful.

(I liked Fury Road)

Yeah, Force Awakens was my favourite movie of 2015 but Fury Road is arguably the more innovative and better-structured movie and it deserved every award it received.

I’ve been seeing a lot of Fury Road hate and mockery from Star Wars-centric accounts on Instagram today and I’m just like “Can’t we have room in our hearts for both of these movies?”

Now I’m remembering my first-ever forum post, made back in 2000 when I was 10, angrily declaring that Phantom Menace should have gotten Best Picture over American Beauty. Ahhh, youth.

On topic: I thought that the main characters in certain scenes of The Force Awakens were not in enough Peril. For instance, where were the sort of scary monsters (dianoga, space slug, etc.) that you see in the OT?

And Captain Phasma needed more screentime. Seriously, she was almost as underused as Boba Fett in ROTJ.

Haha! You mean that silly CG crap that hurt my eyes for three minutes and added nothing to any sense of peril?

No.

JEDIT: Except for the part about hurting your eyes, I can’t speak to that.

I mean they were eating people…if I were in their positions I’d be shitting in pants.

It’s not that the idea of a large creature eating people was non-peril-inducing, but the things were so fake, and so silly, the whole scene was so silly. I wasn’t worried one bit about what might happen to Finn when it was dragging him around, because, well, it was dragging him around instead of eating him like it did with everybody else. It’s also been discussed before how he wasn’t even bruised after all that.

Fair point

and so silly

I disagree. I’d love to know why you think that way though.

You obviously weren’t paying attention. There was one shot in some of the members of Kanjiklub were being dragged away before one of them got their hands on Finn.

It’s also been discussed before how he wasn’t even bruised after all that.

I don’t remember it violently smacking him against the wall. Other than his ankle (maybe) he should have been relatively fine. Shaken up by the ordeal but physically fine.

They felt like the PT. That’s the easiest way to explain it.

I can’t find the original quotes/articles about it, but I seem to remember during production that JJ (or one of the producers) made a big deal about how much they were going to use practical effects.

Now, I am pleased by the number of practical effects, explosions, creatures, and sets that were in TFA. They looked great, and it was certainly leaps and bounds above the PT.

Having said that, I can’t help but be somewhat disappointed by the amount of CGI used. I get it, TFA is a 2015 sci-fantasy movie, so of course CGI is going to be used extensively. But ideally CGI is used to augment effects/sets.

Considering the (perhaps media- and fan-overblown) hype about the use of practical effects, isn’t it surprising and disappointing that:

  • two very important characters are entirely CGI? (Maz and Snoke)
  • from what I’ve seen in making-of videos, all the ships and ship battles were entirely CGI?
  • CGI monsters (the rathtars) are so prominently featured in the foreground of scenes and have to interact with human characters to such an extent?

Again, I like TFA’s practical effects, but considering the hype surrounding them, I expected far less noticeable CGI.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

Ssh! If we can’t see them, they can’t see us.
