Disney/Fox should release a Bluray set of restored fan films if they release Verta’s version.

It is available via popular public torrent sites, so clamoring to get onto private ones isn’t necessary. Your google-fu is pretty poor if you don’t know how to add “torrent” to your current search terms.

At the end of the training remote session with Luke talking to Ben, what are the green ovals in the top right with white scribbled lines for?, in the last sentance or so before you cut to the Death Star board room

I think those are just reel change markers. It’s something we no longer see in digital projection, or on home video, but would definitely be present in 1977. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cue_mark for more info.

Hope that helps. 😃

Or you can watch this scene from TV’s “Columbo” …

…when the detective gets a crash course in reel changes. This is where I learned what that bright colored oval flashes were. 😃

Woa. That brought me out of lurking. That’s exactly where I learned it too.

I don’t normally worry about popular press articles about SW restorations. But this is getting to be a bit too much this time. Hope it cools down soon.

I agree, this level of publicity doesn’t feel like a good thing. Preservation and press don’t necessarily go well together.

I think the decision to make a TN1 website is really fueling the continued press for this. Having it centralized in that sense makes their jobs much easier. As do the videos. But honestly, the videos might be a good thing. No one who watches them will think it’s competing with official sales. And the many fans who don’t mind the SE will dismiss them instantaneously as inferior quality in their eyes.

Just hit CNET:

“Clearly, this fan release of the film is not legal and will most likely be shut down by Disney and Lucasfilm lawyers soon.”

Lmao sure. As if we all don’t have copies that can be continually redistributed if such a thing were to happen. Besides, lucasfilm has already made it clear that they really don’t care about the fan efforts here.

It isn’t good to poke the bear this hard and display their ineptitude this publicly… At the same time, if they were to take down the distribution of a version of the film they don’t offer if they don’t have any plans they could admit to for their own upcoming release of the OUT, then there would be a backlash from pissed off fans they might not be prepared to handle (and hard questions they’re not prepared to answer). I have to assume Lucasfilm/Disney/Fox are not happy with how good fan-produced preservations are getting, compared to what they’re selling, but they may continue to steadfastly turn the other cheek until they make the inevitable decision to produce an OUT of their own, at which time they can C&D versions like this without coming across as the Devil to the fanbase they want to continue have happily buying their merchandise and buying their movie tickets.

On the other hand, they know what we want, but have to justify doing it, and if anything is going to make these companies agree to do it while they share rights, it might just take fervor over quality releases like this to push them over the edge to get off their butts and make the boatload of cash they’ve been leaving on the table.

I too am not too happy about the publicity but there have been several waves like this and it has always died down. I do give interviews but mostly because I know they’re gonna write their articles anyway and at least that way I can have my say and remind them about the rule to own the official releases and that the amount of people who download these preservations is actually pretty insignificant compared to the amount of people who buy the official releases, not to mention the number of people who illegally download straight rips of the official releases. Plus it helps keep this part of the fanbase happy and buying more Star Wars toys and tickets to new movies, which I’m sure they actually care about much more.

I don’t see the publicity as a problem at all. Either lucasfilm continues not to care, they see it’s cutting into their profits and decide to do their own OOT release, or they C&D anyways and piss off the fans. Given that since the sale to Disney, they seem to be focusing the whole company around fan relations, I doubt they’d do something that so publicly foresakes them.

Now I’ve heard from what I consider to be a pretty reliable source from Disney (not lucasfilm so take it with a grain of salt but still) that an OOT release is part of the plan to be released within the next couple years, probably alongside another release. So my guess is that they’re going to turn a blind eye to this stuff in the meantime, especially since the publicity helps fuel demand for an official release, then when they release their oot, they’ll probably start cracking down on fan releases a bit more.

And at that point these sorts of releases (i.e., improvements on whatever OOT ends up coming out, or just GOUT syncing stuff etc) will then be just another of the minor projects here. Similar to the upscales and color corrections and transfers of non-SW work that is probably only of interest to a few dozen of us, and has literally zero impact on sales.

Everyone outside of this forum and myspleen will be 100% satisfied with a OOT BD unless they completely botch it. Harmy and TN1’s versions will become awesome historical media artifacts the way Doctor Who reconstructions are for previously missing episodes that were recently found in Africa. Labors of love but of no concern financially.

I agree. Star Wars hasn’t been this popular since 1977 and at this point keeping the fans happy keeps their cash cow profitable. What’s more, I don’t see this as bad publicity for them at all. It’s not Disney’s fault that we don’t have the original Star Wars on Blu-ray.

And Besides, if they do release Mike Verta’s Legacy Edition - or allow him to supervise an official restoration - we could all pack up and go home happy. (Not that I believe for one second that the Legacy Edition will please everybody here or even meet everyone’s expectations of what Star Wars should be, but it would make a fantastic resource for everyone to build on, to create their own “ideal version” of Star Wars. Within a year of its release, after everyone has made their little tweaks and shared them here, this site might be deserted… I doubt there would be any need at that point for them to start cracking down. I know I’d be done.)

Great, so Disney is going to take our very sense of purpose away by giving us the OOT? Way to ruin everything, Disney. I better start looking for a new hobby sooner than later…

You’re right that Mike’s version would probably not satisfy everyone. But if it came out, I would probably stop reading anything on this forum regarding it. It would just be too good to have an era again of watching Star Wars without the flaws of some sort or another popping out at you. It would be so close to perfection, I would take the ignorance is bliss route rather than become educated on its imperfections. 😃

Hell, I might do that for any Disney OOT release, if it’s ‘good enough’.

I fear Fox and Disney’s lawyers will come down on these like a ton of brick. I’m always afraid of fan-edit downloads of films I’m interested in because of legal repercussions. Which is a damn shame, since I am intrigued by a lot of the ones out there.
