Which is more probable? An EU idea.

First post here guys, hope to have many good discussions in the future.
For my first post, I wanted to ask something that has been bothering me for a couple days now. (I consider myself a Star Wars fan, but I’m sure there is the elite few who know so much more than I do).
Anyway, say it’s the galactic civil war, rebel versus imperial going on all over the Galaxy. We started to see more bounty hunters and pirates in the books and original trilogy. My question is this. Say a person wanting to be a pirate stumbled across the find of the century, an abandoned clone war era cruiser. Which would be more likely the most realistic situation (in the sense of the Star Wars realistic point of view):
A venator class (Jedi flagship)
A providence (like the invisible hand)
The venator is awesome and probably one of my favorite ships, but it requires a crew of 7,400. But it can probably be manned by a smaller crew if need be.
The providence, on the other hand, is also a neat ship. Having an epic armament if one of the modified versions, it carries 1.5 million droids and only needs a crew of 800.

Now, the situations I can see is these:
Pirate finds the venator fully equipped, abandoned in the outer colony space. Could it be possible muster a group big enough to pilot and use it effectively for a life of piracy.
Now the providence, also fully stocked, just abandoned with the droids all shut down, maybe he had a friend or buddy who could get into the mainframe of the droids and reprogram them to work for them.

Both abandoned due to either not wanting to be apart of the empire (venator), and simply not being needed anymore, (providence).

What do you guys think? I’m open to any and all ideas.

Welcome aboard!

A similar scenario happened in the old Marvel comics, where a pirate nemesis of Han Solo came across a Star Destroyer that had been heavily damaged in a battle with the Rebellion, and realized it was repairable. The issue of how many pirates does it take to crew an Imperial ship didn’t really come up though.

And if you’re wondering how Han and his opponents can be out in space without a pressure suit, there’s a forcefield protecting them.

Where were you in '77?

That’s cool, I haven’t seen that before.
From what I’ve seen, ISDs were much bigger and needed a larger crew than most other ships.

I’m just curious on whither it’s possible and what it would take to get either ship functional.

The Tarkin novel has a similar situation. You should read it. Basically an early cell of the Rebel Alliance recovered some Separatist ships including some sort of cruiser and launched an attack on an Imperial base. They eventually steal Tarkin’s personal corvette which has stealth capability and cause havoc.

I remember that, and one of the separatist ships they recovered was in fact a providence. But they had a rebel army, what if it was just you and maybe a small group. What could you pull off easier and why?

what I mean is. Is it even possible to bring that venator up to functional capacity by possibly recruiting over a period of time. Or would it be easier to just simply try to hack the droid crew in the providence and have that?

Booster Terrick runs the Errant Venture with a skeleton crew of 4,800. They don’t mention how many of that crew may be droids, but it’s alluded to that it’s about as small a crew as he can get by with and still have the ship remain functional. It’s also stripped of most of its armament and left with little more than self defense capability. Hardly battle-ready. Noble’s idea of an additional droid component could help with that.

I don’t know anything about prequel-era ships but just going by the info above, I suppose I’d go with the ship needing the smallest crew.

The second book in the Thrawn trilogy, was it Fleet of Twilight in English, is about a whole abandoned fleet. They had some way to control it by very few people.

Anything is possible, this is fiction, buddy.

I’m actually reading that book right now and the Katana fleet is more or less from the clone wars era, granted that is in the pre-PT clone wars canon so it may not fit perfectly with the new time-line, but it’s very close to Forgotten Noble’s scenario.

Also I’m sure there’s some PT RPG sourcebook somwhere that can offer some info on how many people/droids that’s needed to run a cruiser. Or you can probably find similar, if not the same, info on Wookieepedia.

(The Thrawn book was called Dark Force Rising btw.)

I don’t remember the Dark Force fleet being functional. Seems like they got one or two to move momentarily or crash into another ship. I need to read the series again.

Imperial destroyers were reported to be much much bigger. But the ship with the smallest crew idea is smart. But what if the venator can be run by a crew smaller than 800?

Anyone else have any thoughts they’re willing to share?

If you’re asking so you can write about it, just write about it. Have a thousand IG-88s running around and 20 living persons and then you can have another story about the IG’s mutiny.

Thought about writing, don’t have much free time anymore. But I see your point. Thanks!
