Well you done good though. Good job.

…Killing me on that revert back to the Death Star. I’m just saying.

The “Padme Lives!” ending seems pretty seamless now. Good job on that. I’ve always loved the insertion of the Qui-Gon line as well.

I still can’t abide by what you’ve done with other aspects of the film though. What you have is much closer to early drafts of Episode III where the premonitions and the threat of Padme’s death played a much smaller part in the narrative. Without putting emphasis on that emotional through-line, it makes Anakin’s turn seem much less motivated, moving his tragic flaw from emotional attachment to just being kind of power hungry and generally shitty. I think one of the ways the novelization improves this is by adding more connections to Padme’s death: for example having Anakin’s outrage at not being promoted to master be not out of petulance but because he wants access to information in the archives that he believes will help him save Padme.

This is just my opinion though. I know you have a different take that you’re going for and respect you for trying to achieve that, I just don’t think the material available supports it.

Also I think the Death Star vs. Coruscant thing barely matters…I guess I prefer the Death Star so yay?

LOE is certainly a bolder edit than the other two, and mixing and matching my cuts of I and II with L8wrtr’s III is totally legit.
The points you two raise and more are addressed in the commentary, too. I did indeed try to mediate the earlier idea of Anakin’s turn by downplaying the role of his premonitions about Padme’s death, largely because she doesn’t die in my cut anyway.
I am of two minds regarding the Death Star scene. I’m erring on the side of caution, I guess. It’s not part of the story of the prequels, and only appears during the pre-ANH traileresque ending montage. (There’s no reason to involve Geonosis or Dooku; at least here it remains an Imperial project.) I prefer to have Coruscant, technically, but emotionally feel the Death Star is what gives the scene its weight.
However, anyone wanting to hack at my cuts to tweak to their liking, it’d be a quick fix.

While L8wrtr’s 2 was my early favorite when researching prequel fanedits, I really don’t agree with several of the choices he made for Ep3.

And, quite frankly, The Cutter’s idea to have Padme live at the end of 3 is such a wonderful idea in my opinion, I don’t consider keeping other edits anymore that don’t employ it.

There is a little sound glitch when Anakin says “I’m going to turn you over the Jedi council” (0:52:03), on both tracks.

Man, little is right. Sounds like a small pop.

JEDIT: For clarification, this pop is audible in at least V3 (and probably V1 and V2 as well). It’s in my source file, being the DVD audio upsampled to lossless (to avoid generational loss when I synced it to the BR partway through production to save myself a heap of work).

Just saying, I found this pop to be odd because there is no editing work on this particular shot.

I’ve shown your ending to my family members and they love the fact Padmé lives (I must be the only one to want her dead 😃). Appart from a few minor details I really like your cut (well, except the “Vader’s suit” sequence… at least the russian scream is less ridiculous so it’s still better), especially the way you’ve seamlessly removed little bits of dialogues that were very weird (as if the characters had read the screenplay and even seen the movie). Qui-Gon speaking to Yoda is great, I remember Liam Neeson was reported (rumor ?) to have recorded a voice over sequence back in 2004, but it was nowhere to be heard in the final cut for some reasons. Clever choice to complete this subplot with “Clone Wars” material (I would love to see Qui-Gon Force Ghost in “Episode 8: The First Order Strikes Back”).

I have finished a french srt file by the way. Waiting to watch the entire movie with my family so as to correct residual mistakes before I send it to you (and post the link here if it’s ok for you).

Again, very good job !

Boy do I love losing the Yoda/Sidious fight, and having his thwarted clone ambush be the one time you see him light up. Qui-Gon dialogue excellent. Padme surviving is clever… but I can’t quite hand-wave the decision to split the twins up. In some ways I’d like to see the actual births and namings dropped, Luke delivered, with an attempt to maintain the sister reveal down the road perhaps… not sure how that would work though.

I also have little to no problem with Palpatine’s disfigurement in the theatrical cut, and the ‘reveal’ strategy sort of jarring, but it just goes to show that you Can’t Please Everyone. I do love seeing all the different takes on things, and the way an Actual Movie starts to emerge when you boil it down.

I can’t believe they chopped the Seeds of Rebellion plotline in favor of some of the other shit GL kept in originally. It drives a further wedge between the leads, and I’d argue some of Portman’s best acting is in deleted scenes, namely the second SoR meeting and AotC scene where her sister is ribbing her over Anakin’s obvious affections, as for once (or twice) Padme has something to hide, as opposed to her usual modes of exposition or strained love dialogue.

Thanks, MalàStrana, for sharing your family’s thoughts on seeing it. And I’d be glad to share your french subtitles too.

Little Nemo, thanks for your feedback as well. Not being able to hear discussion of Padme allowing the twins to be split up is a shortcoming of this approach. Assuming, as it seems clear Lucas did, that the audience is already familiar with the films that came out prior, we already know from Ben Kenobi that they were split up for their protection.
I would really have liked to have an establishing shot just before the roundtable discussion about the twins of Padme elsewhere on the ship.

Really fantastic work! The altered “NOOOOOOO” at the end really saves that scene, even making the overacted gesture seem like it’s better.

As for the rest of it, the pacing is so much better. I actually believe Palpatine as a mastermind and puppeteer, as opposed to a character that things just kind of happen in his favour, and Anakin’s turning to the dark side is far more relatable and easy to take.

I am torn on whether having Coruscant edited into the bridge scene in previous versions was a better approach than having the Death Star under construction in this one.
On one hand, having Coruscant there made the scene fall flat for me, like it may as well have been cut entirely (I know that’s not something you would like to hear given how much effort it must have taken).
On the other hand, having the Death Star at these early stages at the end of ep 3 makes me question how they could have possibly built a bigger, better Death Star between eps 4-6. Still, I think leaving it in was the right choice.
That’s all incredibly nit-picky of me though, and I doubt there’s a perfect way to handle it.

Again, great job! I thoroughly enjoyed it 😃

ROGUE ONE might give a answer to that. Maybe the geonosian project was too ambitious and suffered many failures over the years, before a simili Wernher Von Braun (= Mads Mikkelsen, as the space nazi scientist officer 😃 ) arrived to fix everything right. I would even love to see in this movie that a second death star is already being built in secret (and, why not in the background, plans for a crazy and impossible project called the “star killer base”…). So, with only 2/3 lines of dialogue Disney could settle for good one minor inconsistency. I hope they will !

@ Hal9000
I have finished the subtitles. I have also made a few corrections to A CLOAK OF DECEPTION file (for which I have finally chosen a better french title translation than the one used for the novel: “Un voile de dissimulation”, sounds better than “Un vent de trahison”). I’ll send the final files once I have also finished APPROACHING STORM.

That’s not a bad thought at all. It would definitely clear up an “issue” that was non-existent until the prequels. But if they’re fixing inconsistencies, there are far more important ones than this 😛
Also if I think about it, they didn’t really finish it between eps 4-6 at all did they? It was still well and truly under construction.
I really like the idea of having Easter Eggs for Death Star 2.0 and Star Killer Base thrown in there somewhere, and Mads Mikkelsen as a (star) war criminal can have all of the moneys. ALL OF THE MONEYS.

So I guess my minor niggle with the Death Star ending is really a non-issue isn’t it?

I’ve decided on Hal’s eps 2 & 3 whenever I use the Machete order to watch the saga, which will probably be more often than watching from I-VII now. They’re awesome.

Yep, but Episode VII has practically dismissed the inconsistency of the Empire not using clone troopers in only two dialogue lines. I was a little bit disappointed that they didn’t extend the dialogue to add something about Kamino, like “Kamino facilities and clone engineering knowledge have been destroyed at the end of the Clone Wars anyway”. Again, it would be great to hear that line in ROGUE ONE.

Thanks to MalàStrana, all three edits have French and English subtitles. Once he get the French subs in a state he’s happy with, I’ll package them up and link to them on the IFDB listing for each.

But, as a little gift to you all, I went through and transcribed the Backstroke Of The West subs for Labyrinth Of Evil too. It was a nice bit of fun to close out my work on this project. Should be posted pretty soon.

Hey Hal. Recently watched all V4 versions after V3 and in labyrinth of evil had to thank you for how you executed this edit compared to others. Most editors like placing the opera scene extra early but you made it clear that Anakins main motivation was rooted with contention with the Jedi council and their code. His dreams of padme dying were simply the last straw and the way you cut the film and reordered scenes let me feel anakins turn more viscerally than ever. Thanks again Hal!!

I’m leaving the forum for just a month or so. I want to take a break from all things Star Wars. I’ll still respond to PMs, but not to posts in any of my threads.
Before I temporarily become a hermit, let me once again thank you all for your help and support from the beginning. And the subtitles will be listed shortly on IFDB, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

If someone would be so kind and direct me to these subtitles (via PM perhaps), that would be fantastic. At the moment I can only find the edits in the list.

Just a question, could you upload your colour-corrected version of the “Other Boleyn Girl” clip? I can’t for the life of me get it to fit in or look natural.

I have had something huge happen in my family in the past week, so I cannot do this right now, but I certainly can in the near future. Remind me if I seem to forget, as I was on a Star Wars break for the month of March.
