Yeah, it’s a little dark, but it’s not as dark as the blu-rays, and if you bump up the brightness any more, you are really going to notice the compression artifacts in the dark areas.

FWIW, the Jabba interior shots are very dark in all of our LPP scans.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

REPORT-SW-v2.5

There is a noticable wobble on the lower left fusal thrust engine of the third X-wing to come into frame.

I searched this thread before posting, but it doesn’t look like anyone else has mentioned it.
I’m not sure if this is an artifact from 1977 or not.

I don’t have the film handy, but I assume this is the first shot of the fleet? I actually thought this was an error in Harmy’s composite too, but then I looked at other original sources (I think TN1’s video) and this is what the original composite did.

At the risk of getting bashed for this, I’ve talked to several people who, like myself, have calibrated monitors and we all agreed that the contrast/brightness on both Empire and Jedi is way low, for some reason. SW looks perfect but both Empire and Jedi just seem to be quite dark. Did something change there?

That’s simply not true. Especially the official DVDs from 2004 are darker than anything else.

Eh, I gotta disagree. i was going to post this as a question, but I’ll put it like this. I watched the WP of ROTJ next to V 2.5 and noticed contrast was lowered. You can no longer see the matte-boxes (which is kind of disappointing) and space is all nice and black, where before it had that “contrast is high” haze to it. even with looking at the side by side gallery you can clearly see matte-boxes in space battles in GOUT, but not in V 2.5…

Was this intentional? Or was is just part of the process to pretty up the release?

Also a report. i suppose putting a time stamp is not necessary as it is a whole scene.

The scene where R2 and 3PO are in the “robot torture chamber”, the scene has a blue tint to it, the entire scene.

This doesn’t mean it’s incorrect. Watching the film in a good theater with a projectionist who knew what he was doing, you wouldn’t have seen the matte boxes. They only put garbage mattes like that on shots where they knew the contrast would be such that you wouldn’t see them in the theater. That hazy space you’re talking about is not correct at all and the GOUT is about as far from proper contrast as you can get.

Yes and BTW higher contrast means more crushed blacks and blown-out whites, not less
And the scene with R2 and 3P0 certainly doesn’t have a blue tint - it has very nice natural colors with a hint of blue from the lighting, where the old version had a strong sepia tint.

Somehow a lot people seem to be suffering from the delusion that v2.5 somehow has more crushed blacks than v1.0 and some even said than the official Blu-Ray and I just can’t figure out why. There are a few shots that are darker than v1.0, most of the time because they were darker in the original version and v1.0 still used the SE versions but 99% of v2.5 is brighter than v1.0 and way brighter than the official BD. You can’t use the GOUT to judge this, because it’s washed out and these old home-video releases were usually made extra bright.

REPORT-ROTJ-v2.5 - At the screen wipe at 4:57, there appears to be a weird glitch in the audio where it skips (for lack of a better word) momentarily. This appears to be present on all the audio tracks, so it may be native to the film. It’s present on 83 and 93 mixes.

Harmy doesn’t work on audio. But if it’s present in all those mixes, it’s probably real.

This should really put the blue-tint thing into perspective:

Look at that and tell me if v2.5 has a blue tint 😉

I was using the WP side by side to judge. Now that you have shed some light on the sepia being blasted, I guess that would explain my eye balls seeing the blue-ish tint. Thank you for clearing that up for me. Oh, and the matte-boxes as well. Only two things that really bothered me 😃

I went back to the scene and stared forever. At 11:03 as you see R2 enter the room, there is a blue light in the room. Duh… I apologize Harmy. I can’t believe I missed that.

Harmy, this new version looks awesome! Just one thing stood out and it’s perhaps more faithful to your film sources, but during the Rancor scenes the creature has a brown tint to it when the BD source is used and then a blueish/greenish one with the 35mm source. Is this discrepancy normal?

This is a defect in the source tracks. I tried to get rid of it while assembling the audio mixes, but was unable due to lack of suitable material to patch over it. I found that while it is quite noticeable on headphones, it’s harder to hear it when listening on speakers, and not actively hunting for errors.

It could be a dropout in the music stems, it could be a bad edit of different takes, I’m not really sure, but it’s there in all versions as far as I can tell. There are also a few other things of that nature scattered through the film, but I’m not going to say where they are.

The 1986 US laserdisc I used for the '83 stereo mix had a large number of dropouts in various places, as well as a spot where the tape distorted pretty heavily for a moment. I patched over all of those with the 1989 SWE laserdisc, since they are not actually part of the mix itself and are just errors in that particular copy of it. If I hadn’t done this, there would be a great many more defects to point out.

Thanks for clarifying. Your work on these soundtracks is INCREDIBLE. In particular, I love the isolated score tracks, as they are a whole new way to watch these movies.

Thanks for explaining these to me, good to know the reason for them.

I think the shot in ROTJ where R2D2 has black panels instead of blue ones needs an update. At least looking at the comparison gallery it seems like the droid is totally monochrome in GOUT (with the exception of the red light) and in full color on the Blu-Ray. So now it is somewhere in between with just the panels being black again. If this is true a 35mm scan should be used for this shot.

Actually, R2 wouldn’t have been completely monochrome - they really had a model with all black panels that they used to shoot blue-screen shots with. And those shots were shot normally in color.

Yep, that shot exactly. And huh! What do you know!

If that’s the case, by all means, please disregard my earlier post. I’m in full agreement with this project’s consensus to preserve the original film “warts and all” as someone around here said.

Perhaps I never noticed it, because before you guys, I never had such a high quality copy!

That looks like a mistake in the Blu-ray which has been carried over to Despecialized. In Silver Screen, the trench is well lit on both sides of the flash, whereas the Blu-ray crushes the shadows on the first part of the shot.
