Help Wanted: an MP3 of the 1.0 mono mix from the pre-ANH projects?

 (Edited)

Does anyone have or could they create an mp3 or such of the 1.0 mono mix from the pre-anh boots, or from teh pre-remix British telecast?

I would like to do some experimentation with reconstruction of the original 1977 version, now that I have all the video I need.

Thanks.

Moll.

Somewhere out there, there actually is. I saw a clip from the original mono mix version taken off of a tape dub from a UK broadcast that is in better quality, so perhaps someone has that high quality dub. Or, at least a dub of a better copy. E-mail me and let me know if you do. I might use it someday for comparison purposes, or maybe someone might want to make that DVD-R project using the mono soundtrack. One person I know is planning to do just that.

A friend and I are considering making a Pre-ANH version with, if we can find them, the UK 1985 TV audio in 2.0 mono (reflecting the 1.0 mix), the 1984 Hi-Fi VHS audio in 2.0 stereo (reflecting the 2.0 mix) and the 1993 DE LD audio upsampled to 5.1 surround with ProLogic emulation (reflecting, some surmise, the 6.0 mix). The rollup would have come from the Mysterious Mysteries version. Video, prolly from his currently shrinkwrapped (!) Faces laser.

1984 Hi-Fi VHS audio in 2.0 stereo

I already have this transferred from an even better source. It's edited together and sounds wonderful!

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

When you want to sync that version to a NTSC version of the video material, you need to speed it down. But It'll probably still sound better than the original scroll bootleg audio.

I realy hope someone has it.

A new release of Star Wars is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

Compensating for the PAL speedup is easy enough, I did it with the Reivax ANH (it's on my hard drive as a bilingual OGM).

As for the 2.0 mix, for which the best source I am aware of is the 1984 Hi-Fi VHS - I'd be interested to know what that "better source" is. XD

The pan and scan CAV laserdisc is a better source. It will never wear out, is the original 1977 Dolby Stereo mix and suffers from absolutely no dropouts.

I rescued the mono capture from my recycle bin.

I've made a 50MB 64kbps single-channel MP3, split into 3 rar files, hosted on a free file host (with adverts and waiting times).

The urls are here. Good luck! (Just realised they'll probably take it down soon because I've broken the split files rule...)

Thanks for this nice file Moth3r.

Here is a mirror for the people that don't like to wait 1 hour to download the next part from rapidshare :-).

I just heard the MP3 of the original mono mix just now...and it truly sounds both warm and crisp at the same time (reminds you of those old vinyl records). This is the best sounding mono mix that exists.

For those who didn't catch an earlier post...this is a mix I last heard in 1979. I was at the old Starlite Drive-in theatre in my hometown of Sacramento, CA and my brother and I saw "Star Wars" there. It was a mono sound print. Not only that, but it was cropped to 1.85:1 (the screen I saw could not accomodate 'scope prints). This reissue print had the "Empire Strikes Back" trailer at the end (the one narrated by Harrison Ford).

I hope to one day do a DVD-R of my own using this sound mix, that is, until whoever creates their "ultimate" DVD-R first, in which case I will see his/her work.

If your computer can't handle torrents or .rar decoding, E-mail me and let me know and I'll see what I can do to help you.

This may be a bit off topic, but I've never seen the Trailer narrated by Harrison Ford, where can I find it?

Once slowed down and padded at the beginning, it remained synched until 1 hour in.
I will try to re-synch the remainder.

Thanks Grisan for helping with the hosting.

I was under the impression that there was a version of the mono mix out there from a better source than mine? Anyway, for the couple of people that PMed me asking for an uncompressed file, I'll see if I can encode the wav with FLAC (lossless) and post to a.b.starwars in the next few days.

Many thanks for making this available to us. It's interesting to hear the obvious dialog differences as well as the more subtle things. I still wonder to this day if the audio recording I once had of the HBO airing of Star Wars in '83 was the true mono mix.
Another source of the original stereo mix is the early '80's Japanese CLV full frame LD. It's not time compressed like the domestic version.

I have a british Laserdisc of ANH from 1982. Maybe that is the same stereo mix.

The audio mix of STAR WARS as it aired on HBO in 1983 wasn't the mono mix. It was a 35MM stereo mix minus 3PO's "tractor beam" line. It was also transferred from the time-compressed LaserDisc (compressed from 121 min. to 118 min.)

The Ford-narrated "Empire" trailer is on the supplementary disc of the new 2004 DVD box set.

I've actually been meaning to create a WAV file of the mono mix from my pre-ANH bootleg tape. But I haven't yet found the motivation to dig my VCR out from the entertainment center.

I believe the best source would be the '89 widescreen laserdisc. It features the same sound mix as the '84 VHS (original Dolby Stereo mix updated with C-3PO's tractor beam line.)

Actually, yours sounds pretty good, probably better than mine. But mine is also much older and wasn't taped off TV. Since your tape comes from the mid-eighties UK television broadcast I am wondering.. does it have the Episode IV subtitle?

According to this site the 1984 Hi-Fi VHS and the 1989 laser have different mixes (the former has the 1977 2.0 mix, the latter the 1985 "digitally remastered" 2.0 mix). It is the 1977 2.0 mix that I am actually looking for.
