No correct guesses so far 😉

A cleaned up version of the complete 35 mm scan?

SSE - Grindhouse - 35mm Jedi, the last one missing?

https://youtu.be/HNGXsgLRkXU
Well, minus the cleanup 😄
Yes - I’m currently rendering a complete 35mm Grindhouse version of ROTJ - TN1 expressed several times that they had no plans to release a grindhouse version of ROTJ and since we now have 35mm transfers of both SW and ESB, and I do have a complete 4K scan of an LPP print, I decided to go ahead and do it.
Actually, at first, I just wanted a source for my comparison gallery for Jedi, to use instead of GOUT but then I thought why not release the whole thing, since I’m already doing it. It’s just basic color correction and nothing else, so it’s shaky with lots of grain, dirt and scratches, but for those who enjoy that grindhouse experience, it shoud serve very well - and the colors aren’t faded at all.

Though the scan had a very heavy blue cast and was very dark, so I still had to do a lot of hokery-pokery to get the colors to look decent, and each reel, and sometimes each scene, needed completely different settings, so that also means it can hardly be considered a color reference. Pretty much all scans are like that before correction, so 35mm scans can only be considered a color reference, if they were color-corrected by someone actually looking at the 35mm print being projected traditionally.

How Exciting, complete Despecialized and Grindhouse sets… how will we ever choose which to watch! 😃

both of course.

I have a wild and happy idea… Harmy, does this bonus mystery have someone else’s username attached to it, perchance?

Oh dang, I blame the new forum for not reading the last few posts…

OK, encoding is done on both the MKV and AVCHD versions. I’m probably gonna give them a watch tomorrow and then I should be all set for the Sunday release. 😃

Oh, it’s finished already?!

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Author

Wow this means we now have 35mm scans of each of the three original films. To think this was just a figment of our wildest dreams so many years ago. Thank you Harmy! And Negative 1, Poita and everyone else I’m forgetting.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

It’s taking ages to render from these 4K files - 18 hours elapsed and 12 hours remaining. It’s probably because I’m rendering from a 5TB USB3 drive, since I don’t currently have enough space for the files on the internal drives.

Before anyone asks, it will be 1080p - I tested it and there would be virtually no benefit in releasing this in 4K and everything would take four times as long and have to be 4 times bigger.

And it is GOUT synced - I replaced the missing frames with just black frames, as I felt that for a Grindhouse version, that was the best solution. I think none of the missing frames are in shots altered in the SE, so for some future cleaned up version, the missing frames (or to make sure they match, the entire shots) could be replaced with the BD.

No worries.
As long as I get it in the next few minutes we’re all good 😉

Sounds awesome Harmy, I’m really looking forward to both ROTJ Despecialized and the 35mm Gridhouse version. What would you say, is the Grindhouse version roughly on the same level of quality as ESB Grindhouse regarding stabilization, cleanup etc? And will TN1 use the same scan of the same LPP print to do a more cleaned up restauration later on?

Author
Time

Yeah, I’d say it’s on about the same quality level as ESB grindhouse, except for color, of course.
And I’m not sure if TN1 has this same scan but I’m pretty sure they do already have a scan of this print.

I don’t think that’s it. He said it was something “many” people would be very happy about. I think most people wouldn’t care much for anything TPM related.

Oh, you’d be surprised how many people would be happy about that one, but no, that’s not it (and someone else is already working on that one anyway - http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/THE-PHANTOM-MENACE-THEATRICAL-HD-Toppers-Version/id/17137). Think broader than Despecialized 😉

bring back deleted scenes? 😃

After a crappy week with various health problems, this news has completely turned it around for me. Fabulous news indeed. Your tireless work to help keep these films alive in their original forms is greatly appreciated Harmy. The prospect of being able to shortly see Jedi from a 35mm scan is just remarkable! Thanks for all that you do 😃

Author

So… do you think I should watch the 35mm transfer or Despecialized Edition 2.5?

“This post is worth… ONE QUARTER PORTION!”

Author

For normal viewing, I recommend Despecialized. ROTJ v2.5 is despecialized pretty much completely, apart from a couple of wipes, so for all intents and purposes it is the original version.

Less than 24 hours until ROTJ v.2.5! Never saw v.1.0 so I’m excited!

This is a reconstruction of the 1983 theatrical version of STAR WARS. The original shots were painstakingly restored using
various sources (listed below) and the film received an extensive shot by shot colour correction based on a fade free 1983
LPP Print. ROTJ v2.5 is despecialized pretty much completely, apart from a couple of wipes, so for all intents and purposes
it is the original version.

The remastered version (v2.5) represented a significant improvement in picture quality over the earlier 1.0 version
due to the use of better encoding and higher quality sources and replacing many of the despecialized shots with
higher quality ones.

Version v2.0 only came out as a limited release workprint.

A gallery showing all the changes can be found here:

The MKV version contains a large number of audio tracks, including the latest versions of the preservations
of the original audio mixes in DTS-HD MA, three different commentary tracks, an isolated score and dubbing
tracks in 13 different languages.
