Finally got a copy of this. Looks amazing! Like I’m actually watching film (of course)! I have a question, however. I notice some, for lack of a better term, light smearing. I’m just curious what causes this. See linked comparison with Harmy’s:

I think it’s intended: Tatooine’s scenes were originally shot using a peculiar filter to make them look blurred, more “romantic”; in the blu-ray (Harmy’s DE’s main source) these shots were digitally altered to look sharper, so they probably removed light smearing as well.

I think this is an example of what has been discussed at length already. Not intentional, but an issue with the scan.

Read the last few pages - it really has been discussed at length and frames from other scans of the same print were shown with no streaking - it’s definitely a scan issue

Id love to make the BD with all them extras and the menu file but inserting that menu vid is becoming a lil difficiult lol.

I am messing around with the Team Negative1 35mm Silver Screen edition trying to synch it to Harmy’s. Is Harmy’s GOUT synched? I read that it might be. Just wanted to be sure.

It’s interesting to see all the frames missing from SS compared to Harmy’s. Also interesting is that certain shots use slightly different footage in comparison. Fun stuff! 😃

Yes it is. There is already a gout synched 720p reencode of this on the spleen that contains some of the DE audio and subtitle options.

Ah, I see. Thanks. Well, now I have a 1080p Harmy/GOUT synched SSE with Harmy’s 5.1 English audio. I am a super duper happy nerd. ❤️ Harmy. ❤️ Team Negative1. I might even get around to coloring some of Harmy’s frames to replace the missing ones from SSE.

There is no different footage in our version, of course,
since it is all from the original film.

The footage from Harmys still might have some remaining footage that is changed.

Right! I should have said that there are extra, bonus frames in Harmy’s that did not exist in the theatrical release, and that Harmy’s uses the wrong footage of some shots! 😃

Wrong footage? Like, SE footage? I don’t know what you mean by “wrong”.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

That’s a tongue-in-cheek usage of wrong. A few shots differ between Harmy’s and the SSE in interesting ways (not obviously SE changes), and since the SSE is the theatrical version goal, any differences in Harmy’s are wrong in that context. Of course, there is nothing wrong with Harmy’s except perhaps where there is still special edition stuff in it since his goal is the eradication of such stuff. (Also, some of the coloring in Harmy’s disappointed me, but that’s the fault of his sources so I hear.)

That still doesn’t tell me what parts are different in Harmy’s, and in what manner they differ.

And just what are those “interesting ways”? Would love to hear about it. And what SE stuff is still in there? You might want to post that in the DE quality control-thread.

We are mentioned here:

Team Negative1

What a bizarre list. Of the two on there that are actual fan edits, one has never been seen by the author, and the other is just a bare bones TPM edit that cuts out a few bad parts. Still, any publicity is good publicity.

Also:

There’s no news yet about where fans could see the movie, or whether a public screening is even legal, but there’s no rest for the weary, especially if you’re a Star Wars fan. They also just announced ways other fans can take it upon themselves to clean up their original version of The Empire Strikes Back as well.

Seems that they got the public website link and are just writing based on what’s there.

Probably.

I’m actually not sure all this publicity around the Team Negative1 and Harmy releases is a good thing. I posted on a major torrent site a version, back in the pre-GOUT days, which had the video from EditDroid’s LD rip with the reconstructed pre-ANH roll, and the mono mix from that 1985 ITV rip, and it was just a flash in the pan which I’m sure went nowhere, and I feel pretty safe because of that, but these people are getting actual media attention with projects much better than mine could have hoped to be, I fear for what the Rat might do in the future.

Simon Pegg has publicly tweeted about Despecialized. That’s a guy who was in Force Awakens working with J.J. Abrams. I think if Disney was going to send a cease and desist they would have done it a looooong time ago.

I’ve finally had time to sit down and watch significant chunks of this release rather than just a few quick sample scenes. In general I like it. I’ve commercial transfers (usually of older movies where the original negative is long gone) that aren’t as good-looking. That said, I have some issues with the audio: first, the intro logo and clicky projector noise at the beginning is WAY too loud. It overpowers the audio of the original. Second, the actual audio is a bit muffled sounding. Does this have to do with the low bitrate of the AC3 track or is there more going on? Finally, will a 5.1 track based on the 70mm surrounds be included in a future release? That would be sweet.

I know nothing of these things, but I second a 5.1 track to go along with this. I would love that.

Watched this on my projector the other day and it was Star Wars bliss.

The audio is the compressed audio from the 2006 DVD. The official Team Negative 1 release will use 35mm stereo, which should sound much better. Anything aside from mono English/Spanish tracks are left up to everyone else on OT that wants to do it themselves.
