Team Negative1 - Return of the Jedi 1983 - 35mm Theatrical Version (unfinished project) — Page 22

I think that the changes in Empire definitely were negative to the film. Changing those hallways to balconies and windows is just horrid. It takes away from the claustrophobic atmosphere of the situation. Kind of like THX 1138. I’m not arguing that it had the worst changes, but you shouldn’t say they had neutral effects.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.

I gotta agree that ROTJ has by far the worst changes. To make the SE of the original at least watchable all you really gotta do is splice out a few frames to make Han shoot first. Yeah, the Mos Eisley stuff and CGI Jabba is pretty bad, but they pale in comparison to “Jedi Rocks.” And Empire isn’t really harmed at all by the changes. I certainly don’t think any of them help or were at all necessary (the original is a perfect film as it is), but the worst is changing the line “Bring my shuttle.” Hardly Earth shattering. For the most part the changes were neutral. Had no positive or negative impact on the film. If only those types of changes were made to the other two as well, I wouldn’t complain too much.

The SE of Jedi, on the other hand, is totally unwatchable. “Jedi Rocks” is one of the worst things I have ever seen, without exaggeration. Absolute cringe. I have no idea what Lucas was smoking, but I hope I never inhale any of it. The Little Sarlaac of Horrors is terrible too, and don’t even get me started on the “Noooooooo” and Hayden Christensen with his creepy ghost smirk. What little was left of Vader’s dignity from the prequels was robbed by those changes.

Luke saying “You’re lucky you got outta there” rather than “You’re lucky you don’t taste very good”, Boba Fett’s Jango voice over, and the new Emperor footage and dialogue, are other showstoppers in Empire… Not to mention the out-of-place CGI background distractions in Cloud City.

I agree. But in 1997, RoTJ-SE didn’t seem quite so bad. Jedi Rocks was the low point in the trilogy (and perhaps film as a whole), sure. But if you closed your eyes and ears for that, and squinted a bit through the Sarlaac, it was pretty much smooth sailing for the rest of the film. Certainly not the case anymore. You think you’re in the clear for a bit and a damned ewok blinks at you.

True, and in 97, while they changed the ending celebration, they obviously didn’t have Hayden to put in yet in the last scene and Jar Jar didn’t get the last spoken line. We didn’t know how not bad we had it.

The new Emporer dialogue absolutely ruins it for me. I consider the 97 SE to be damn near perfection- The only things holding it back (besides outdated CGI) are Luke’s scream and “PREPARE MY STAR DESTROYER FOR MY ARRIVAL.”

Thankyou for reminding me of all the other things in the Empire SE that tick me off. I only mentioned the one thing in cloud city because it was the first thing to my mind, but I would actually have to say that the Emperor change irks me the most, Boba Fett coming in second.

I can deal with the 97s. It’s the 2004 changes that annoy me. But the original will always be the best. 😛

I’m sure it won’t be long before we have that in pure HD now 😉

Oh. I was going to say, Density took the words right outta my mouth.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Can I ask what’s the spec of the machines that you’re restoring these projects on? and how many members do you have?

Author
Time

We are using Intel core I5/I7 machines with 8G-24G ram. There are no custom setups, basically higher end PCs, with mid level and higher end GPU for rendering. Lots of drives, internal and external ranging from 500G to 3-4 Terabyte ranges.

Some members have dual custom monitors, while others have ultrawide 21:9 monitors.

Screenshots of monitor and layout:

Note the Metal Xwing and Tie fighter

Screenshots of the trilogy.

Normal size for 1080p (1920x1080)

Full widescreen (some tiny edges at times depending on cropping)

You can read about other people’s setups here:
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/What-is-your-home-theater-setup-for-watching-Star-Wars-movies-or-what-equipment-would-like-to-get-if-you-could-afford-it-or-dream-setup/id/14630

Or feel free to add your own setup to that post

The number of people on the team varies from time to time, started off with 1, expanded to 2,
and then finally got to 4-5, with some leaving, and others joining.

We have several ‘helpers’, that are just like team members, that help with distribution, quality checks, etc.

Poita, Harmy, and others are contributing and collaborating directly and indirectly. There are many others here at OT that also help out.

Wow thanks, you have some serious kit! I can tell that even on my expensive laptop trying to get into editing will be hard, of course I have integrated graphics but the spec is awesome otherwise; rendering just takes so long.

The bottom end sounds roughly comparable to my top end.

If I was editing at work, I would insist on 2 monitors so I could have a dedicated display. That is about the only reason I would want a second monitor. I tend to dislike them a lot.

I think each film has certain drawbacks no matter what version. There are things that piss me off with just about every one. I really like that they got Ian to redo the emperor, but I don’t think the new lines add anything. But the originals (which should be the focus of this topic) have their issues as well. Continuity was not one of Lucas’s specialties and the SE’s just prove that he doesn’t pay much attention to those things because so many of the changes disrupt continuity and most of the original mistakes were never fixed. I thought the original Jedi was the best version. It really didn’t need any of the SE additions. My ideal trilogy would be a semi-specialized of ANH, The TESB SE, and the original ROTJ, so I am very excited for this version of Jedi to be released. Love the samples so far.

I have two monitors, both 1920x1080. It’s quite useful, I can watch a movie or TV show while gabbing away on IRC. 😉

Oh come on. You started a new account to post 4 times the same image? The last time I checked image-only posts were allowed only in off topic. Also the projects exist, why shouldn’t we be able to discuss them even if you don’t want to do any updates?
