I just wish Kylo Ren only took his mask off in front of Han Solo, the rest of the movie he could should have kept it on, but perhaps the mask had some sand caught inside it from the planet Jakku which was coarse and rough and irritating…

I understand that desire, but his interrogation scene with Rey is so much more effective with the mask off.

That’s what my edit is going to do.

I know this is a very controversial edit, but I’m removing the interrogation scene between Rey and Kylo. Vader never interrogated Luke, so it makes it more powerful that Rey’s ultimate confrontation with Kylo is a battle.

…That has to be something I have to watch to judge. That scene is always one that left me with an impression.

I think that would weaken Rey’s journey towards using the Force.

I eagerly anticipate the plethora of Force Awakens fan edits to be released in the coming years, not necessary to supplant the excellent original as much as provide alternate takes. Personally, my biggest gripe was the somewhat unclear political situation, but I’m sure fan editors will find other things to “fix.”

In this case, would Rey still get captured by Ren? Or would she still get captured but simply not get interrogated? I only ask because in the former case, Finn’s motivations for going to Starkiller Base would have to be reworked.

Personally, I loved the interrogation scene- great character work and a clever use of diverted expectations. 😃

I heard somewhere recently that it was weird for Starkiller Base to not be dark after destroying Hosnian Prime. If it uses the power of the sun, can target planets in other systems, and is not established as being mobile… would it not have used the sun for the initial use?
The idea discussed earlier about having the Resistance attack Starkiller in the hopes of preventing the destruction of Hosnian Prime might be able to kill two birds with one stone. It would seemingly imply that the station was constructed as a one-off way to attack the Republic’s capital. The Resistance may destroy the base, but it’s bittersweet since they did not do it in time to prevent it from achieving its goal. It might be emotionally resonant to intercut Han’s death, Rey’s rage at Ren, and Hosnian Prime together. Interesting possibilities.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Okay… to many posts for me to read right now so I’m just going to post my list.

  1. use the standard light saber sound
  2. explain the republic better and just what gets destroyed and why the people at Maz’s place can see it. This might be done by changing the opening crawl.
  3. hyperspace is used as an instant vehicle rather than one that takes time.
  4. Luke needs a line at the end of the film. Something like, “Hello, Rey. I’ve been expecting you.” Or something cool. To hell with it spoiling the next films.
  5. I’d need to see the deleted scenes and the next movie before I can know what else for sure.

From my point of view, this movie needs more work than any of the other 6 to bring it to where it could be. It has more potential than the prequels, but the final product isn’t as well made. We get awesome characters. Some of the best in any of the films. But we don’t get a good story for them. I loved the death and the potential that it leaves. But there is a lot lacking. In each of the other 6 films, the story came to a close. This one did not.

When was the last time you watched those films?

Incorrect.

A proposed opening shot of this film would have been a callback to the Star Destroyer shot from ANH only revealing the ship being pulled apart by salvage teams.

If someone felt up to doing that thing it would set the scene for the film in a good way.

Maybe the First Order ship would blow up the wreck and kill the salvage guys for such sacrilege.

One thing I need to wait for is the deleted scenes. I might only cut the interrogation scene if there’s a better scene to replace it. Apparently, there’s tons of deleted stuff that might really improve the film if put back in. Considering I didn’t much care for the film overall anyway, I’m actually really interested in seeing the deleted content. What about that extra scene in the snow with Kylo (no mask) that we’ve seen footage of? What’s that all about? Looks interesting.

Apparently Ren and some snow troopers find the Falcon and search it.

Im glad we (mostly) seem to agree that only a few scenes need to be cut and a few scenes added to even the pace but as a whole the movie was great and could only improve by keeping the changes minimal.
My view’s are like most:

  1. Cut the pirates and Han meetup plus the cgi tenticle monster scene, maybe just see it on the monitors without the full shots.

  2. Change the Starkiller base subplot or at least keep that battle minimal. Think the idea Hal9000 mentions in previous posting of making it so the base is targeting the rebels planet would strengthen the plot.

  3. Lukes scene lasts way too long with the wide spinny pan shot as Rey just stands there.

I would have the movie end with Rey flying away to find Luke and the shot of Leia, Threepio, Poe, the resistance are standing there watching her fly off. It provides a nice set up for the next movie without being too much of an over the top TV series-style cliffhanger. Episode 8 could begin with her finding Luke. This way it ends with a group shot of hero’s standing together just like well… every other Star Wars movie.

I liked the ending as was when I first saw it and the music was great, but by the second time I watched it, it seriously felt like I was watching an episode of a corny TV series where they feel the need to tag an over the top cliffhanger onto the end after the story is basically done just to get people to watch next week. It was exciting to see Luke, but I would have preferred him to remain an enigma until we finally see him in Episode 8, rather than just tagging him on at the end just to say he’s in the movie.

I like that we’re getting new elements in Star Wars like flashbacks and cliffhangers. I don’t see anything wrong with implementing new ways to tell a story. And while I would have liked to seen Luke for longer I liked that I at least got to see the. And there was enough to look forward to in Episode 8 even if you disregard the last scene. I’m sure they put it in there just so people wouldn’t be as pissed that he wasn’t in the movie.

They could have just been honest and said from the beginning “Luke skywalker isn’t in this movie, but he will be in episode 8”

I found more people pissed that they said he’d be in the movie and was basically a glorified cameo. I just personally think it would’ve worked better if his reveal had been saved for 8 instead of just tacked on to the end of 7 as a cheap cliffhanger.

Cliffhangers were new to Star Wars 35 years ago, guys. And TFA didn’t even have a cliffhanger.

Also, yes they didn’t make Mar Hamill being in the movie any secret through his appearance on the cast list and at Celebration and Comic-Con buuuuuut he wasn’t in ANY of the actual marketing for the film. Any of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not upset by it, I’m just saying I’ve heard a lot of people that are.

And I’m certainly not saying it was a bad ending, I just personally would have ended it as she flew away because even though it was a pretty good ending with great music, it felt kind of tacked on to me rather than a natural ending point. In the theater I actually thought they would end it there, but then the movie kept going and I got confused for a second. It felt like such a natural ending point to end it as she flew off. That way they could set the sequel a few years after and it wouldn’t feel weird. They kind of put themselves into a creative corner where now the next movie pretty much HAS to take place almost immediately after this one.

JJ never said Luke had a sizable role and Mark had nothing to do with merchandising and didn’t even do any official interviews regarding the film. So there was no deception there.

Also if you feel it was tacked on there’s nothing I can say to change your mind but I’m glad there’s not going to be any time wasted on finding Luke in Episode VIII. Literally the first scene in the film could be of them training together.

No the fuck? They certainly shouldn’t skip over the training but who says the middle - end of her training couldn’t be fixated on?

cliff-hangeror cliffhanger

a melodramatic adventure serial in which each installment ends in suspense in order to interest the reader or viewer in the next installment.

It didn’t feel like a cliffhanger to me. It felt like the resolution to the storyline that began with “Luke Skywalker has vanished”.
