Nice work, that was the most problematic scene.

I’m pretty sure that is one of the fixes TN1 are planning for the BD version though.

The Despec m4v shown is re-encoded with Handbrake from the AVCHD, so it’s more compressed (which has potential for irritating Harmy, lol.😃 ) But I like Despec better. Also there are frames missing in the -1 scan.

Well it does have more detail in this scene and is more accurate to a Technicolor print, but it has a less filmic look.

The Eastman and IBtech colors are two different beasts. I don’t think this release should be made to look like a Tech, as nice as the color is on those prints.

Agreed! There should be room for both looks.

I’d definitely like a release of TN1’s matched to IB Tech colors. I think that would be my prefered version.

EDIT: I mean of TN1’s finalized release. There wouldn’t be much point if the new release needs to be corrected again, right?

There is, and I love it, but there’s a different kind of appeal to the TN1. The blue on Artoo is lovely, and I really like some of the shots of him in the canyon. And TN1’s version is not finished in terms of color, so it’s not quite fair to compare it to other looks yet. The comparison that you posted is great for a quick fix though. 😃

Was the grain removal your doing, or the result of using Dre’s tool (if you’re using it).

I know there are a lot of grainophiles here, and I understand the appeal and agree to an extent, but the reduction in this image does look good. 😃

I did that - I wanted to test what it would look like - also, I didn’t use Dre’s tool - I just did a quick adjustment in AE without even looking at any reference. 😃

What tool did you use in AE for grain? Looks nice, and not as ‘plasticy’ as when I’ve used some adobe plugins , even at their lowest settings.

Oh god yes. Those colors with this thing would be wonderful. (There is still the unfortunate light leak present through most of it, but the scan has a remarkable amount of detail for what it is. The fact that people don’t have smeary Loweryized faces is just great.)

Quick Burning question:

how can I create a BDMV folder from the mkv?

I just popped the file in an iso and that worked on one Blu Ray player but not a PS4 (and I’d rather have a “video disc” rather than “an mkv file on a disc”). I have Toast Titatium and one of the options is to burn a disc from a BDMV folder. I just don’t know how to create a bdmv folder.

I’m on a mac, so my specific software options are a bit limited. I can find a PC if I need to.

If you find a PC, use TSmuxerGUI.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m able to burn a single file to a disc, but I’m having trouble adding multiple videos to the disc (tried adding the Extras from the blu rays - deleted scenes and all that).

Should I be selecting “Blu-ray Folder” as the output?

BD ISO is a safer bet.
I don’t think you can actually add other videos though.

Use multiavchd if you just want to have multiple video features play without a menu. (I think it can actually do a simple menu, too, but I would probably figure out some other software to use if I was going to go through the trouble of making a menu).

After many years of lurking these forums and enjoying the work of many OT members (I’ve been a myspleen member since 2007), I’ve finally signed up for an account here because I feel inspired to start my own project. But I felt like my first post should really be in this thread.

Harmy, thanks for all your crazy hard work over the years. Thanks to you, I’ve been able to enjoy these classic films with people I care about time and time again, without the disappointment and frustration that comes from poorly-inserted CGI and missing wonderful original physical effects shots.

I watched your latest versions recently with my wife in the weeks leading up to the release of TFA. She was bemused at first by my excitement over the “new Harmys” since I’d last watched them - in fact, at first she had no idea what I meant by different versions of the films! It turned out she hadn’t seen them since she was a kid, watching the unaltered versions on VHS. Once she saw the video explaining how you made your versions, she was horrified by the SE changes and amazed by the effort you’ve gone to - as we all are.

A couple of days ago I downloaded Team -1’s new 35mm release of the first film, and we greatly enjoyed it. There’s something about a true restored film scan that is intangible, like listening to a high quality vinyl rip of a classic album instead of a remastered CD. But I know one day I’ll be as excited as a little kid at Christmas when I download your Despecialized 3.0.

Thanks again!

Hi!

First of all I would like to congratulate Harmy and all the people involved in these Despecialized editions. These are truly remarkable and awesome. Being born on the '74, Star Wars always was part of me, and although I couldn’t see ANH on theaters, ESB and ROTJ yes indeed, and later I was able to see ANH on VHS plenty of times.
On '97 I was pretty excited on the Special Editions, and the changes didn’t bother me very much in front of the perspective of seeing Star Wars on cinema again.
As time passed, I grew more and more upset with this editions, and get to the point that, given Lucas’s opinions on the matter, took for granted that could not see again the Original versions in a decent format, let alone on HD.
For all of that, I want to thank you again for this awesome work.

In second place, I took the liberty to translate the subtitles for the Despecialiced Edition presentation on Youtube, “Introducing the Despecialized Edition and Its Sources”, to spanish, and would like to know if you want them to add to the video.

That’s all. Thanks again, and let the force allow you to continue your amazing job. 😃

No worries. Your English is more understandable than many native speakers.
