I lost a bunch of video files when I loaded a restore point on my laptop. Is anyone able to upload the reel 2 preview somewhere? I have 1 and 3 and it would be cool to have the first half of the movie in a rough form. PM me please!

I’d also like to make an inquiry about those time-limited reel preview links.

I have SW reels 1 and 3 and ESB reels 1, 4-6. Am I missing any besides SW reel 2?

If I am, can somebody please PM me links to them?

It’s hard to say, as there were a number of SW reel 3 improvement releases I think.

History : Star Wars was the second print procured
by Team Negative1. 6 x 35mm reels were scanned and archived.
There was 6 reels of a Spanish LPP print, and 5 reels
of a red faded Eastman print, and 1 further reel 5 with
10 minutes.

The LPP had minimal damage, but more on the heads and tails.
There was a constant amount of dust and dirt throughout.

There were no splices except for the original crawl, and
Han shoots first scene.

Technical : Scan was in 2k, and resulted in a HD 1080p version.
Later, select shots were rescanned in 4k, along with the rest
of the LPP print. This was not used as the workflow was already
1080p.

Compatibility :
At this point, there is no GOUT compatibility and no subtitles.

Not done:

  • Cleanup of glue frames

Future : There are advanced Eastman Kodak prints ready to be
restored. The scans are 4k, but again we are targetting 1080p
for the final release.

==============================================

Spread this movie. show it to your friends. tell people you are watching the original star wars!

We are happy to share it with you, because we enjoyed it also… and we hope you will.

It was a labor of love.

But in the end, despite the issues, the time, and money spent. it was all worth it…

We hope that this inspires people, and we especially thank george lucas, and lucasfilm
first and foremost for creating it.

It may have been a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

But not anymore. we hope to celebrate many more anniversaries with you and
watching it as it was meant to be.

May the force be with you.

Interesting that there was an actual splice at the Han shooting scene. I knew you guys replaced it with the Eastman version, but didn’t know why.

As it’s the only one missing, do you suspect that it was intentionally removed and sold/kept separately for some reason?

Edit: Also, to clarify your faq/notes: v1.5 is to be the same as far as the video goes, right? Just extra audio tracks and different formats. This thing is essentially finished?

This was a Spanish print. The Opening Crawl and Greedo’s Subtitles were therefore in Spanish. The previous owner of the print spliced in English versions of both scenes from another print, which was on inferior stock and faded red…

Doh, that should have been obvious. Thanks Rob.

My inquiry about that reel 2 preview seems really paltry now. Can’t wait for this to finish downloading! Thanks for all the work.

Looks pretty good. I am again impressed with what you’ve done with the color. A little bit of weave and damage, but nothing that should bother someone interested in a 35mm preservation.

Is the grain cleaned up at variable levels depending on the shot, or is what we’re looking at all representative of the original print?

So the 25G mkv 1080p v1 doesn’t include the 35mm spanish audio?

Man, I wish I had access… I guess us plebs will have to wait for now, heh.

There was no grain clean up at all so this is representative of the original print. Some shots are just grainier than others. Obviously shots that include transitions or Special Effects are grainier due to the multiple passes the film took through the optical printer. Luckily though, even compressed to 25 GB, the grain moves freely so it is not as distracting as the frozen in place grain seen on GOUT upscales.

No, this uses the English 2.0 Stereo Track borrowed from the GOUT. But don’t worry, the original Spanish audio will be made available in the not too distant future. As I understand it, it has been repaired (the missing sections from the crawl / Greedo Scene restored from another source) it just needs syncing.

That’s what I figured. We all know how grainy certain effect shots are due to extra duplications, but it’s interesting to see it on other shots here and there with the same level (C-3PO in the desert for a shot or two for example).

It might take me some time to get to this, so if someone comes up with a conversion string that works for this release in my resync_subs.pl utility, post it in the Project Threepio thread. Subtitles are very forgiving, so your sync doesn’t have to be perfect. Once we have the conversion string, people can watch this subtitled without a whole lot of effort, even if it doesn’t come with them.
