Also, the Death Star is back in V4 (as of last we heard, at least).

Yes, thank you, that’s true. As much as I don’t care for it, the scene doesn’t really work without the Death Star. It’s still not in Ep2, though, because that one is a totally pointless cameo.

Ok, it’s great to keep it. Especially if we consider that the “real” sequel to Episode III might be ROGUE ONE, as far as we know some elements of the prelogy could be used in it.

Case closed: no revisions to the younglings plot. Upon hearing the scene again, it’s most certainly a young Rey. (I heard a distinct, “Come back!”)

Thanks, I appreciate you chiming in. Just to help in your evaluation, here’s how the Alderaan scene will look in V4, having been brightened up a little: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5UmTwj6Y18

It does look better in this video, but still i’m very not sure about it. I find it more tragic that Anakin killed her (not the “losing the will to live” thing of the original version), because I don’t get at all, within the movie narrative, that she would leave one of her child to people she barely knows without even be part of the meeting to decide it. IMHO the Luke and Leia twin subplot is the weak link of the OT (it was never supposed to be that way back in 1980), the line about the mother is a very small issue compared to others that are raised with the fact that she survived giving birth. To rephrase I would say that I prefer an inconsistency between 2 films over an internal one. Moreover the funeral of Padmé is one of the very well executed scenes in the original cut (even the Jar Jar shot is not a problem). The Padmé surviving the fall of Anakin is the only thing I don’t agree with you in your edit of EPISODE III (plus the removal of the “energy field trap” but your edit of the scene is nevertheless good), I totally concur with the other choices. That being said, It won’t prevent me from watching your V4 anyway 😃

I watched all three of your prequel edits recently. They felt seamless (except for perhaps that day-to-night shot in EpII) and as if they were actual replacements for the movies. Wish I had something like it to swap RotJ out with.

To chime in on the conversation above, I did miss the funeral scene (the music mostly) - but only because I knew about it previously. I think your revision here works well enough in concept. She looks clearly distressed in that scene (I’d imagine she wasn’t super keen on giving up Luke), and shortly beforehand the droid states that she won’t last very long. It just adds a nice extra lie from the Emperor to complete Vader’s transformation.

Well said MalàStrana my thoughts exactly. My go to EIII edit has been stankpacs for awhile now but Hal 9000s edit could change that also the 720p HD over SD helps 😄

After reading all cuts for this version they all sound great except padma lives and the only other scene Im not too convinced about keeping is the deathstar build. The twins are newborn at that scene then when its a fully operational battlestation theyre about 20. After it blows up its only a few years before the emperors built another in empire?!

Update
After watching while Hal9000s edit is a very good version Stankpacs still has that bit more editing to make it that much of a stronger edit.

I can’t help but wonder if James Earl Jones ever yelled out, “Noooo!” in a more emotional, realistic way in another film at some point in his career…or even uttered other dialogue that would work. This would take some research though. lol

Okay, okay. So I finally finished watching the entirety of this prequel trilogy edit. And I do have to say, it’s really very good indeed.

For me though, I kind of feel like this is the Hal9k Extended Cut to my Q2 Theatrical Edition. It’s like…I needed Fall of the Jedi to cut back on all the fluff and nonsense to create a prequel universe I could appreciate and even come to like. Then, after it was long established that I did like the prequels now, I could then introduce a version with expanded content.

Good job Hal. As you say, these edits do feel decidedly prequely, but that’s not such a bad thing it seems. They’re just different, and different can still be good. Well done.

Thanks for sharing. My edits pass the buck to the viewer to decide which viewing order is best. Q2 and AEmovieguy both had interesting ideas about making them fit a first time chronological viewing.

Wait, what? I really liked that change.

Hey, can you please edit your ifdb page(s) to list v3 changes (and v4’s when it’s out)?

IFDB only lists changes up to v2, and the 'spleened v3s combine them together so I don’t know what the differences are.

Which fits my feeling exactly about it being an extended edition of a sort for me.

In any case, all I’m saying is, it’s going on my shelf.

Well, why don’t we raise the topic and hash things out while it’s still fair game?
What does everyone think about Death Star vs Coruscant for the ending scene with Vader, Palpatine, and Tarkin?
Also, are we sure we don’t like the Russian version of the Vader scream? 😛

I believe that you might be the only one who wants to keep Vader screaming “No !!!” and the Frankenstein’s Monster walk as well. Are you sur you don’t like the L8 version of the scene ? 😃

I’d like the Russian scream! Much more effective at conveying the fact that Anakin has just been transformed into a monster.

Optional audio track maybe, ala the pod-race music?

Mmmmm, that’s not a bad idea. Seems a little silly to have an alternate track just for that, though.

I was doing something in FCP and played that scene, and the Russian version was still in there. (I must never have removed it!) I was surprised how natural it sounded, even when I wasn’t expecting it.

I prefer the death star to coruscant in that scene personally. Them staring at coruscant never made much sense to me, and the “small universe” stuff doesn’t bother me as much as some people.

Cool, I think that’s what I’ll do. Two audio tracks, that way everyone’s happy and there’s no room to complain. “NYYYYYEEEEEE!”

Yay! Sounds fantastic

Might be cool to have them looking over a massive fleet of Star Destroyers or something. I mean it doesn’t have to be a round planet-like object they’re looking at does it?

Author

Masking out the object becomes harder then, and might be beyond the scope of these edits.

The only point of the scene is to stage the future events of Episode IV (and to show a montage of deaths - Padmé, Anakin, the Republic - and births - Vader, Luke, Leia, Death Star, the Empire), so there are only two ways that can make sense: you keep the movie version of the scene (with the death star being built) or you cut the scene completely.

Author

Why can’t it just be a cool scene showing the militarized newly formed empire? Sure there wouldn’t be too much of a narrative point to the scene, but it would look pretty damn cool. Haha
