Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 219

There was some buzz about how they used actual lightsaber props that glowed so that the light reflection appeared naturally on the actors/surroundings. So yeah, I’d say it’s actually glowing in that picture.

I was thinking that when watching the movie - the light reflections from the sabers looked really natural.

I also found this video on YouTube talking about a lot of unused and cut ideas from TFA.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYLZhDTITr0
(Probably a lot of other videos on this subject, but this is the one I came across first.)

A few ideas that they were considering for TFA that I haven’t seen anyone talking about here before;

  • At some point Kylo Ren was essentially Vader’s replacement, and he would essentialy have both the same name and a similar mask. This was apparently meant to suggest that “Darth Vader” was his title as opposed to the whole Sith thing that the PT came up with.
(It’s possible that this idea was rejected for contradicting the PT.)

  • Another idea that they seem to have toyed with was including a Vader/Anakin hybrid-Force-ghost. Essentially half Hayden Christensen, and half Vader’s mask. I guess this was the basis for the rumour about Christensen appearing in TFA came from.

Sorry, that was an accident. 😅

Huge Star Wars fan, glad I could join this.

I’m almost finished with TFA novel. It has much more dialogue and scenes than the film (as books usually do). Snoke, in a conversation with Ren and Hux, specifically states that one of the major reasons why the Starkiller Base was built was to get the Resistance out from hiding. I don’t have the quote on me, but it does shed light as to why the base was built, and why it had an obvious weak point.

  • Towards the middle of the film, in the Map Room of the Rebel Base, Leia has a secret “up her sleeve,” involving her own weapon called “The Sledgehammer” by the production.
  • Without storyboards, “The Sledgehammer” is difficult to understand but appears to be a kamikaze-like craft capable of taking down Star Destroyer sized spacecrafts.
  • Leia is proud of this weapon.

Looking back at an old post, I bought “The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” so ive seen all the ideas they had for the movie. The sledghammer was this wedge shaped ship that would force its way though an energy shield to make an opening, before opening its hanger door to let fighters out on the other side.

I’ve got other info if people want

According to CNN, TFA has surpassed Avatar at the box office. It has earned in three weeks what Avatar took months to do.

Will it beat Avatar globally is the big question. Come on China, please help!

I sure hope so. Maybe I’m a snob but I can’t stand the fact that Avatar is #1 internationally (all-time). I’ve never seen it (Avatar) and really don’t feel like I missed anything.

Well I saw it in IMAX 3D and was impressed with that aspect. The desire to see it again never materialized. In spite of the film’s success, the world didn’t rush out and buy Jake Sully action figures.

Why the movie seems immune to the kind of complaints thrown at Star Wars I’ll never know. I’m not hating on Avatar, it’s just nice seeing Star Wars recapturing the whole world again, not just the fanbase.

Hm, tbh, I’ve seen a lot more comments resurface of how shit Avatar is.

And I was one of those whom saw it in Real 3D when it first came out. Like SilverWook, it was a neat experience, but not something worth a second viewing. I appreciate and respect what Cameron accomplished though. From what I understand, he had to have new technology developed to achieve the effects he wanted. Other than that, the world he created wasn’t engaging enough.

Still, mad props to Cameron for creating revolutionary stuff for its time and I kinda actually look forward to his sequels. I don’t think TFA did anything all that extraordinary except give generations of fabs a decent Star Wars movie many of us have been waiting for.

I think the space shots have distanced themselves from the OT quite heavily, there are no wideangle pans showing the mighty size and power of the star destroyers, just telephoto zooms at oblique angles

Well, the “Traitor!” trooper, whom the fans have nicknamed “TR-8R”, has apparently been given a backstory.
It’s hardly important news, but I did find it somewhat amusing.
(Btw, his canon name is a lot more boring than TR-8R.)

I can’t believe there isn’t a THX 1138 reference hidden somewhere in the movie.

Yay, more needless backstory to kill any and all mystique to the SW Universe.

Backstory is easy enough to ignore. Those cantina aliens are always going to be Walrusman, Hammerhead, and Snaggletooth to me. 😉

I’m pretty sure they gave this guy a background story so early on since so many fans questioned him having a lightsaber resistant weapon, not to mention being an uncharacteristicly skilled stormtrooper. They’re essentially just following the tradition of using the EU to make excuses for weird parts in the movies.

I just thought it was someone who knew Finn fairly well, and was really pissed off at him for deserting.

We’ll, that is pretty much the backstory they went for. They just also threw in something about riot-control to justify his unusual weapon.

Electronic Labyrinth: THX-1138 4EB takes place in the year 2187. That’s a sort of cryptic reference.

So I’ve seen the film only once and there are still some things that are unclear to me. One of them surrounds the “destruction” of the New Republic. Was the ENTIRE New Republic (and their fleets) destroyed?

I think it was the capital world or worlds. Which effectively wipes out the leadership.
